    Football vs. Soccer

As a footballer by heart, I not to long ago discovered that soccer is 2nd only to Track&Field as far as complementary sport to football. The primary differences in the two is that what you get a red flag for in soccer, you get a pat on the back in football. I think these two sports could definitely benefit each other. I don't care much for the "meathead" comment. That's like saying that all soccer players have funny haircuts-which is not true.
  2. Speed is mostly unteachable, so you want guys that can run. Those teams with average-at-best speed need to work like crazy on speed and in the weight room. The stronger you get, the faster you will become if you are training for speed and concentrating on flexibility. You can improve in both. Speed wins every time. Bear Bryant said it best, and forgive me while I paraphrase the Bear,"Little ol' fast'uns will beat Big ol' slowens 10 out of 10 times." That could have been Bum Phillips that said that. If it was, I ask for forgiveness from the Alabama faithful.
  3. -1 girl on Sevier County's team is not from a feeder school(Sevierville Middle,New Center Elementary,Northview Elementary). She's from Pigeon Forge. This is PF's first group of Seniors, so she didn't want to go to a school with the 10th graders being the seniors. Sevier County dominates girls basketball in East Tennessee. Huskey doesn't try to act like an expert in the papers or in person, he gives credit to the girls when they win, and rarely when they lose, he blames himself. He's also got a great staff in Billy Ward and Beth Etherton. They dominate with local girls. Seymour's Brooke Johnson wasn't even talked about out of 8th grade to come to Sevier County. If this was Anderson County she might have received a BMW not to play for Clinton or Anderson Co. For you Oak Ridgers, your girls play tough, but Sevier Co. only loses 1 player this year. *Props to Gene Huskey*

    Bench press

I have an updated report on Josh Ward from Sevier County. He competed at the Arnold Classic this past weekend and benched 551 pounds. He pressed 573 but 1 of the 3 judges didn't count it because he "hitched" on the way up. He will be a Senior this fall.
  5. "In the Air Tonight"-Phil Collins "Spoonman"-Soundgarden "Enter Sandman"-Metallica
  6. Any young coaches applied at Alcoa? I didn't realize that you couldn't carry your years over. They will never hire an experienced/successful coach due to that reason only. A younger coach might be their answer.

    Bench press

CMoore 2 you might be right, I just knew that it was in the 530's.
  8. Blitzing LB's work if you have a young/inexperienced QB. But with an experienced and accurate QB-he'll always or should have a "hot read" to get rid of the ball vs. an unaccounted for blitzer. Reference to Experienced QB's: -Jeremy Bates-Sevier Co.-5A All-State 1994(UT/Rice) -Joey Mathews-Sevier Co-5A All-State 1997(UT) -Shane Kelley-Sevier Co-5A All-State/Clinic Bowl Mvp-1999 (Carson Newman) -Angelo Raga-Sevier Co-5A All-State 2000(some D2 school in Pennsylvania)

    Creatine

Creatine, in my opinion, isn't bad for you as long as you take it in moderation. In college, I was moved from WR to TE in off season workouts prior to my Junior year. When the head man told me I needed to put on about 10 pounds(I currently weighed 205 lbs.), I started eating like crazy. I supplemented a couple of cycles of creatine from Feb through June and bulked up to 220. The only benefit I would receive from it was the first week of "loading up"-my bench and squat would jump like crazy. The main problem I had with it was that I would cramp like crazy during high intensity running drills. I was drinking more than a gallon of water a day, and that seemed not to be enough. I think like any other supplement, it's more in the athlete's head. If an athlete is on a supplement, then automatically-they feel like they are getting stronger. If I had to do over, I would still workout the same, but not take as much creatine as I did-I would have probably only cost myself about 5 lbs.

    Bench press

I agree with JPat on the plyo workouts. Speaking of a big bench press, look no further than Sevier County where Senior to be Josh Ward holds the world record (at sanctioned events)for his age (just turned 16) for benching 531 pounds. At the end of the month he will compete for the second straight year at the Arnold Classic in Columbus,OH. Not as a body builder of course, but during the weekend, they have lifting competitions throughout the place. Not a bad offensive guard either-6'1"-310 lbs.-check him out next fall for the Smoky Bears.
  11. Tyler Cannon of Pigeon Forge High School. Pitched and played short while tearing up pitchers with the stick. Plays a lot of varsity basketball as a Freshman this year. Being compared to Todd Helton at this age. Great student and kid. His father, Larry Cannon is Varsity baseball coach at Pigeon Forge. He taught his son great bat skills.Switch hitter.
  12. no question, quarterback is what you build your team around. QB is more than a position on the field, his responsibilities are great on and off the field. An offense's personality usually reflects the qb's character. But give me 5 tough O-Lineman and I'll be happy.
  13. I think it was missingthesouth who was wandering if any other 5A team from East Tennessee competed for a state title. Sevier County beat Nashville Glencliff for the title in 99 and lost in the semis to Riverdale in 97.
  14. Don't know much about Brent, but Todd was starting at inside LB in the spring at UT and transferred that summer. I heard he didn't care much for Majors.

    Bench press

The Bench Press is much like the 40 yard time in football: It's bascially an easy way to measure and compare athletes across the board. Personally, I think that the power clean and parallel squat are training specific for football, but with teens having more difficulty conquering the technique of these two lifts, the bench press is more of an accurate measurement of strength.Plus, you never hear the conversation at the health spa go like this, "hey dude, how much you clean?" Does anyone know the NFL combine record of reps at 225 lbs?
  16. Josh Ward-Sevier County 6'1" 310 lb OG Bench:530 (no b.s.) Squat:600+ -moves decent, powerful run blocker when he wants to. -reportedly a good student I also think the Jennings kid from Jeff is impressive. Athletic kid who also is a pretty good roundballer.
  18. 1990's CN NFL players-Todd Collins(Pats,Rams),Brent Collins(Bills),David Poole(Falcons),Clayton Holmes(Cowboys),Vernon Turner(?) current NFL players from CN: Cedric KIllings(Vikings) Tim Croff(49ers) Marc Cerqua(Bears) I need a list of the Tech NFL alumni-- Sparks is Bear Bryant of D2
  19. Spener Gulimire? from Oak Ridge. Great speed. Plays both ways. In my opinion, just as valuable as Booker for the Wildcats.
  20. In the modern era of football, I have a tie for the greatest player ever at Sevier County. Jason Layman(UT and Tennessee Titans)or James Bates(U of Florida). Jason graduated in 1991 and was on everybody's All-American team, and went on to be a All SEC offensive tackle for UT, then being drafted by the Oilers/Titans in the second round. Definitely the best lineman I've ever seen in high school. The very next season, James (LB-TE) made several All-American teams as well. At 6'2" 210 linebacker, he chose Florida over UT,Texas,UCLA, and Michigan, and later became a starter for the Gators and has 4 SEC and 1 National Championship ring for his services. Both of these guys had the ability to take over games and was definitely always the best player on the field while they played.
  21. Justin Sutton and Jeremy Parton of Sevier County. Scooter Houston and Jeff Jennings of Jefferson County. I'm sure that DB and South Doyle will produce some nice backs as well Should be a nice region of backs.
  22. The difference between high school and college and football are night and day. It's almost two different sports. The difference in speed is the main seperation of the two. As far as coaching, I would imagine that being on the road recruiting and the year around grunt would take its toll, especially on a family-oriented guy who is used the high school routine. On the other hand, a character man like Coach Quarles or a Steve Brewer of Sevier Co. would be great recruiters. A lot of moms and dads would feel very comfortable sending their kids to a school which is represented by quality guys.

    COACH OF YEAR

My vote is George Quarles or Scott Meadows. I also think that Gary Sheppard at Halls gets the most out of his players than most coaches around. If you beat Halls, you have earned it.
  24. I saw this cat up,close, and personal. Great potential. If he doesn't get complacent, he will pick his school for college.
  25. Waters is a fine athlete, congrats to him. Yes, it is true that Tech is a "level" above C-N, but by no means is competiiton greater. TN. Tech couldn't compete with CN. For those Eagle haters, you need to head down to Mossy Creek and check out what Coach Sparks means when he talks about "Orange Bullets."
