  1. That doesn't make any sense. Maryville has already beat central once. If maryville was to beat them again, you have them losing to Tennessee, yet if Central beats maryville then they will beat Tennessee? That makes no sense at all. If central is good enough to beat Tennessee, and maryville beats central, then that means that Maryville is good enough to beat Tennessee. I don't see how you come to different conclusions for the two different teams.
  2. RebelRon just addressed the football part, I'll address the academics part. Both Oak Ridge and Maryville High are feeder public schools, and technically Maryville has a longer tradition since it's some 20+ years older. Each year students from Maryville go to schools such as Harvard, Columbia, Brown, Duke, Vandy, Emory, Virginia Tech, GA Tech, and other great academic universities. In addition, 76% of the graduating class goes on to a four-year college. An additional portion goes on to two-year college. That means that only about 15% of Maryville graduates do not continue thier education. Oak Ridge did not have that information on their website, but I doubt it's higher. In addition, 45 - 48 % of those graduates are awarded MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS for academics. Thats more than half the students who go to college. Of course I wouldn't expect you to know anything about college, but that's extremely high. Most recently OR has won awards for their AP classes, that is they have the highest ratio of AP class attendence to students in the state. Maryville offers few AP courses, but the ones they do, 98% of the students in them receive college credit. Which means virtually every maryville AP student receives college credit for a high school class. In the Junior State-Wide T-Cap writing exam, Maryville has had the most "6's" in the state, which is the highest one can score. We had more than some very good very large high schools almost double our size, like DB, Germantown, Collierville, etc. I could keep going, but I think I've made the point. It's hard to compare two schools who are so good at both athletics and academics but don't kid yourself, Maryville is just as good an academic school if not better than any in East Tennessee depending on what category you look at.
  3. I'm on to Mike the Vike. He's really Lou Holtz in disguise. Nobody downplays their own team's chances as much as Holtz does for SC. No seriously I really hope Maryville plays well against Central so we can get a TN High - Maryville matchup. It sounds like it'll be a classic. On a lighter note to echo the sentiments of Rebel9 - Central Bobcat is a giant smelly nepalesian Yak dingle-berry
  4. Another thing to consider is that parents do move kids to go to better academic schools all the time. It happens at Maryville, and I'm sure it probably happens at other strong academic schools like Oak Ridge, and D-B. These schools also have good football teams year in and year out. I would bet that 100% of Maryville's transfer students moved for education, not the chance to play (or warm the bench as talent dictates) for a winning team.
  5. Here's a word on Maryville "recruiting." 1st point: Maryville has nothing to offer except a winning team. No scholarships, no under the table stuff, in fact if a student outside maryville gets in they pay tuition. 2nd point: Maryville takes very few tuition students in general because they're running out of room. I've heard there is a waiting list. No one gets preferential treatment. In theory a kid could decide they want to go to MHS to play, but they'd be put at the bottom of the wait list, and chances are slim they could get in now, since tuition students from the previous year get priority to come back. 3rd point: Why the heck would maryville need to recruit when the at least 95% of the team is from the city limits anyway? The one key player maryville started recently (off the top of my head) who did not live in the city was Carl Stewart, however, he attended Maryville City Schools since kindergarden because his mom's a teacher at sam houston. The point is that maryville wins year in and year out with city kids. I hope this ends any discussion of Maryville's alleged "recruiting"
  6. I agree, I think it will be very interesting if THS runs a wing-T. I think that as you alluded, Maryville's greatest ability is to adjust to what they see. Combine that with depth and by the second half Maryville has a huge advantage. I think that for a team to beat Maryville this year they need to get up first, and cause turnovers, mainly control the clock. Maryville has a history of stopping some great running backs from the east ridge boys that went to Nebraska (it was east ridge wasn't it?) to Gerald Riggs to Cassen Jackson.
  7. Maryville found out in 1997 what a real team looks like when they got smashed in the clinic bowl. They realized they had to take it to the next level. Next year they won. I don't know that TN high is on that second level that it takes to beat maryville. The other thing is that this team really hasn't done that much better than years past. You all have always had good records with high-scoring games. It seems that you might have moved up "a level" in your region but do you think that your region really prepares you for teams that go to state year in and year out?
  8. GQ keeps a tight ship. I remember in High School some maryville players got on here and started talking trash and he put an end to it real fast. I don't think there's any current maryville players on here. Quarles doesn't want them on here just for the reason that they do get wrapped up in the hype of big games instead of focusing, so if they're not here then its not really a problem.
  9. I went back and looked at TN High's record for the past few years. They've always laid big scores on the weaker region 1 teams like unicoi and have done very well against other good teams like Betsy. There's a larger point spread for their wins this year, but that's about it, so I don't really think that TN high fans or maryville fans will be able to get a fair sense of how good the other is unless there is a head to head matchup. My gut instinct as a maryville fan is that Maryville has traditionally shown up for big games, and upset the conventional wisdom. Some games like MoWest 2002 (#1 vs. #2) and Central this year come to mind. Tennessee hasn't really done that. They've put up numbers but again not really too much of a difference between past years and this one. It will be interesting that's for sure.
  10. The Maryville Schedule plays region opponents every year (halls, carter) even if they are weak. That accounts for six games. Traditionally, Maryville has played the other 3 blount co. schools (Heritage, WB, and Alcoa). That leaves one open spot (MoWest which has been a really good team in years past). If Maryville moved up to 5A that would open up a couple of games to schedule others, since WB and Heritage are in 5A. But the playoffs is what matters and since 97, Maryville has made it to state 5 out of 7 times, losing to Central in the 3rd round in 99 and MoWest last year in the semi's. No other school in 4A, and maybe only Riverdale in 5A has been that successful, so obviously scheduling is not a big concern for a team that can consistently make it to the championship.
  11. You have to be kidding me. That's the lamest, most overly romantic, unrealistic analysis that I've ever seen on CoachT. No. Football is won in the trenches, with key plays, smart coaching, and few mistakes. Advantage: Maryville. When Maryville lost last year to MoWest, it wasn't because Morristown had more heart. It was because Maryville turned the ball over seven times. If Morristown had more heart, they surely would have beaten a Hillsboro team that Maryville had beat twice. Your earlier post was right when you talked about 3 and outs, not making adjustments etc. That happens to be Maryville's strength. Also, I would argue that a state championship is more real (and desired) by a team that has won it recently, only to lose a chance last year in a close game. I'm sorry, but every team since 1997 thats been losing to us from region 1 and 2 might have had more heart; but they didn't have the talent, coaching, or athletes of champions.
  12. If Maryville beats Tennessee High, then it will be in the Semifinals, and they will be going to state. If we play Central, it will be in the 3rd round, I believe. And a STATE BOND is what you pay to get out of jail.
  13. hello . . . . . . . . . newman ( - Seinfeld)
  14. Disclaimer: Nobody pay any attention to this thread. It is the opinion of a few extremely rabid maryville fans and is not supported or endorsed by Maryville fans on the whole, the team, or the city of Maryville in part or in whole Seriously, Maryville has an excellent team this year but you're only stirring up trouble by this thread. Personally I think maryville could play any team in the state and stay close, but you just can't make such rash statements like that after the game against central. Everybody knows that Maryville has been the best team in their division more consistently than any other team in the state the past few years, and that's enough for me. Besides, Riverdale has been laying smackdowns like the Maryville-Central game all season long.
  15. Just a general observation not necessarily about the above quote, but I've seen a lot of Central people predicting a CHS win 24 - 21. Kinda odd to have that many people with the exact same score. Maybe there's multiple usernames for each Central fan.
  16. I think the chances are very small that it will be a relatively low scoring game. If the game isn't close, it will likely be a runaway for maryville. If it is close, it will be a shootout, especially when you consider the offensive numbers put up by both teams.
  17. There is no way to measure the intangible (poise, leadership, etc.) of being a quarterback other than the success of the team. Edge - Maryville under Cade. No one is saying that Helton is bad. He's a great player. To say that Helton is the better quarterback because of stats alone is ridiculous.
  18. It's a bobcat, but he would probably refer to it as a Wildcat, since Kentucky's his team.
  19. That's exactly what people were saying about the Morristown West game in 2002. It'll be close, not a blowout either way, so on, and Maryville was up by 4 touchdowns, at Morristown after the first quarter. Maryville's offense always has the capability to blowout a team, even some really good ones. That matchup was also a #1 vs. #2 according to the AP. I don't think this game will be a "blowout" but I don't think it will be that close. Maryville comfortably by 2 TD's.
  20. South Doyle should make like Johnny Knoxville and ... do something different. Football is not your strong suit. You were a little short in saying it's a not nice comment. Generous would be a more accurate description of the previous assessment.
  21. I'm not sure, but Ive always heard that Maryville-Alcoa game was the oldest in the state, and I know for sure it's been reported on the news that way. 80+ years I think. But I would agree that SP and Marion Co. is a bigger rivalry game than Maryville Alcoa even if it is not the oldest. Yall are crazy.
  22. AE, You always pick against Maryville. Don't try to act like its something novel and special this time because its not. The only reason I think you pick against Maryville is so that WHEN they lose (as every team does) you can say "see I told you so." Only problem is that you've been so consisitently wrong. THEREFORE: based on your prediction, I can confidently predict a 28 point win for the Maryville Rebels.
  23. But the weak teams are up because the normally good ones are down. It's an inverse relationship because out of each game there is only one winner. It's possible that TN High is the same as its always been, but look better, because others are that down. I'm not saying they are but that's the way it could work. Maryville people are not cocky. We have the most state championships of any public school in TN, the bulk of them in the last few years. Also consider that since 97, Maryville has only been beaten by an upper east TN team once in the playoffs. That was MoWest last year (the other playoff loss was in 99 vs. Central). Maryville has earned the right to be the team to beat, and in my humble yet astute opinion it is the original poster who is cocky for suggesting that TN High cannot be beaten when their recent past proves otherwise.
  24. This thread has taken a dead turn. Anybody that hasn't seen both teams play this season shouldn't make comments about THIS SEASON. Obviously, Maryville has performed better in the past, but like someone else mentioned, both Melrose and Maryville were at home last year, and both have something to prove. I think its ridiculous to say that Maryville doesn't play anybody, and I wouldn't say the same about Melrose, since I don't follow West TN football. If you talk about tradition, then talk about it, but don't act smart about something that hasn't been proven.
  25. Neither Sullivan East nor Tennessee high should be in the top 5. Their region is traditionally weak and until they can put together a couple seasons of going to state, they're unproven against teams like maryville, central, melrose, and the hillsboro of the past few years.
