  1. Chair and popcorn comment.....best on this thread. I have copied it, pasted it, and put it up for a later date when I am in need of humor.
  2. Believe it or not, if it doesn't rain tomorrow, Coach Quarles will be on campus at WB. Of course it will be helping me coach our 10u baseball team in practice. I can't get him to put on any WB attire though. It's fun watching him sweat through a few losses on our baseball team. Everyone needs a loss every now and again!!
  3. Well....here we are in a big predicament. Last night every region played in the state EXCEPT the ones with Knox County schools. Heck Cumberland County played and their whole county is in TERRIBLE SHAPE. More snow in the forecast Wed night into Thursday. The thought is that one more day of cancellations may force the region to eliminate the 3s and 4s in girls play. Now that is not going to set well with with William Blount and Maryville who have been willing to play EVERY DAY SINCE LAST THURSDAY! They would be kicked out while Bearden and Farragut move on and they are the schools that were not allowed to play because of their rule. I don't understand, however, they are ALLOWED TO PRACTICE during these days?
  4. Okay...enough is enough...Knox County Schools need to adjust their rules. I understand not playing regular season games when there is no school. But Tournament time is different. This is insane. Now Halls has Coach Moore who coaches boys and girls. What is he going to do? He can't be in two places at the same time.....and oh, by the way, if Knox County hasn't checked the weather, it looks like an inch or so is due overnight which will once again force them to be out of school and then what?????
  5. On a brighter note WB was just awarded along with 4 other schools in the state as the 5 highest for ACT improvement. With our demographic, an ACT average of 21+ is very good. We have bumped it over 2 points in 3 years.
  6. Haven't been on coacht in 2 years. But I have tried to get GQ to release info today with no reply. He is classic. If you want a secret kept, tell him. He will not let it spill. It's good to not say so everyone else can choose based on either what they think MHS will do, or, more importantly, choose what is best for their school. In my opinion the best choice for MHS is to stay in 5A and save their school some cash. Playing in 6A has not posed a challenge since they moved (undefeated in District Play). They have proven that the classification is irrelevant. So save money on travel. Also, there are some high quality teams in East TN in 5A (just as many if not more than 6A). Also the freshman/JV point was a good one as well as the parent who has to drive 3 hours to watch a half of football then the mercy rule. On second thought, the best choice would be to play Junior Colleges during the regular season instead of high school teams. From what I can gather, a lot of teams don't even bother much when they play Maryville because they know what is getting ready to happen. Teams rest starters and just take their beating and move on. So JUCO games might be more entertaining. When watching MHS games, they have become incredibly predictable and somewhat boring (unless you are the coaches or parents or the players). 42-0/49-0/49-7/42-7/38-0/35-0. Very few neutral fans or fans from opposing teams even go to the games. As far as the WB rumor, it is a strong likelihood. Maryville would try to play Fulton instead of WB. Of course, that all depends on what road MHS takes. WB will have no chance to move to 5A as there would have to be at least 3 teams move up besides Maryville to have the opportunity. WB is locked into 6A with DB/SHILL/JEFFCO/BEARDEN/HVALLEY/BRADLEY. It looks like Cookeville will be moving west and only 7 teams in WB District unless MHS moves. I have been trying to predict the MHS decision, but it is hard. My gut feeling is that the Maryville Rebels will make the jump to 6A to avoid any negative publicity. I don't think it is the best move for the school financially, but I think that is what will happen. We will know soon enough, but we won't hear it from George.
  7. As good as Meadows was here.....he started 0-7 his first year. Ridge is a winner. Ridge is very smart. Ridge will be fine.
  8. And as far as Meadows is concerned.....he was excellent here.....however......he started 0-7 his first year.
  9. Definitely a tough game to watch and call last Friday night. The Mo East team is not as bad as everyone thought they may be as they nearly beat Sev Co. No doubt though the HV game was poor. From mid 3rd quarter on it was a meltdown. Coaches are working extremely hard and do not take losing well. I like our staff. I am confident in our staff. But they have worked 3 official games together. 3! They have made mistakes but they are learning to work together. With all of that said it is a good time for an off week. Heritage next. 16 straight wins against the rivals. They need to win that one and move on. HHS much improved and could be a shootout.
  10. That was a classic comment in the paper. One of the best ever. No sugar coating from GR.
  11. Some of those freshman and sophomores looking for the canoe?
  12. I watched Siegel play against MHS and if this Matthews guy was calling the plays....kudos to him. He had a very exciting offense.
  13. Interviews are going on. I am expecting some news hopefully by the end of the year.
  14. WB has had its share of difficulties over the last 32 years. However, during a stretch of 8 years (1999-2007) WB made the playoffs in 7 of those 8 years and had solid teams. No, the school has never made it past the 2nd round of the playoffs, but, in my opinion, winning records and playoff berths are defined as success at the school considering the competition and the history. Some may disagree and that is understandable. But to say that they have had no success in the last 32 years is, in my opinion, a bit of an exagerration.
  15. Sadly, this ridiculous call takes away one of the greatest play calls in state championship history. This official needs serve a 1 year suspension in my opinion. Anyone making this call has issues. If the call had not been made, do you think anyone from Whitehaven would have said anything? Uhhhhh.....no.
  16. MHS 42 Siegel 14 They will enjoy their trip back East and will win their 43rd straight game.
  17. Don't know how admin and central office would feel about the bonus. The only issue is the coaches of the other sports in my opinion.
  18. Sweetland was in the running last time but eventually withdrew. It would be interested to see if since he moved over to Alcoa if he might be interested. However, unless WB finds funds outside the school system, Sweetland would take a substantial pay cut to go from Alcoa to WB. WB needs to find private donors to fund a signing bonus in my opinion. That could at least offset the yearly loss for a few years. I am thinking $20000-$25000 would help ease the pain. Gov Man...you in for about $5000?
  19. Yes...the question about pay was answered correctly. Current coaching supplements are not competitive in Blount County. Also, as Gov Man eluded to, money is very tight in the county schools. It was very much needed for the tax referendum to pass. Much needed. In Alcoa it was passed with no problem because they get it. Not so sure about the county faithful. I deal with a lot of county parents daily who, in my opinion, could care less about athletics and quite honestly education for that matter. There are a lot of fine people in the county, but the percentage of apathetic parents is WAY HIGHER in the county as opposed to Maryville and Alcoa. Back to the hire...it needs to be a exciting hire. WB from 1999-2007 only had 1 losing season and made the playoffs in 7 out of 8 years. Mac and Meadows had a lot of success. It can be done. But it is not easy.
  20. Quite honestly, it is hard to get coaches from MHS or Alcoa because they take a LOSS IN PAY to go from Assistant to Head when you go from the city to the county. Ridiculous. Mike White has always been a leading candidate to come coach at the field named after his dad. But why would anyone want to leave MHS as an assistant and go to WB as a head coach.....and LOSE MONEY? Heck the county folks can't even get a tax passed. Absolutely no financial support whatsoever. I am confident that WB will look strongly at MHS and AHS assistants, but they have to find MONEY! If they can drum up some cash somewhere, they might be able to lure a city boy over. No doubt it will be a challenge, and it takes a special person to take on the challenge. The MHS and AHS programs are so successful right now, life is fun for those coaches. At Heritage and WB it would be and is very difficult work. It can be done...but it will take a special person.
  21. Another example of a COACHING VICTORY!!!!! You switch the staffs and you switch the outcome. This is no knock on Bearden. It's just simply a compliment towards Quarles and his crew. They are worth 14 points a game..at least. Always making the right calls at the right time and using rules and game management to help them.

  24. Yes you are right. Alcoa and Carter play the first game and it is at 6:30. Don't know why the brackets are wrong.
  25. Alcoa vs Carter Boys Tues, Mar 2 6:30 on truthradio.tv. The brackets have that game at 7:45. It is at 6:30.
