  1. 3 points 1. i don't see darby being full speed in the spring, but he should be ok to go in the summer, no? i like the backfield of darby, brooks, and mcfall 2. yeary is a great player, and had an unbelievable year.... but todd collins comparisons? i know you are talking about making plays by himself, but its a reach. watching '87 game film, he was a man among boys. the kind that wins nat. def. player of the year. however, yeary is great in his on respect and he should most certainly be a 1st team all-stater. 3. DZ get over the bball board and let us know what to expect. Get on Gentry, he should pay you for coacht posts as well
  2. i am told to expect another down year. not sure what has happened in dumplin valley. from mid 90s to 2003-04, pats bball was tough. very competitive in the district and region. not so anymore. of course, the district was much tougher in those times as well in my opinion. there have been bright spots no doubt, but it was a MUCH deeper league. for example, cherokee and mo east were middle of the pack at best in those days, and they featured ryan lawson and cecil moore respectively. thoughts? not sure about stepp. i would recommend indoor track.....
  3. same here with bball... i believe it was the rocky blair show in fact. i digress, i have heard all the coaching and practice rumors as well. time will tell. like we have said before, changes need to be made for the program to go from mediocre to good/great. i think starting practice earlier will help. its a year long sport at the next level, if the kids arent two/three sport athletes, it will not hurt them to put in more time... and not just voluntary haphazard lifting sessions either.
  4. i dont think any jc fan could be disappointed with our season. cant say we greatly overachieved (campbell co negates that), but if you would have offered 6-4 and a playoff birth in the preseason, most of us would have taken it and ran. first coach we've had in a while that fits in with jeff co. football tradition (incl. meadows). thats neither here nor there. great season, lots to build off. look forward to seeing what happens in offseason. like jc4life said, gut has to make changes in order for us to take it to the next level. 80 yrd run-- unreal play. block(s) in the back occurred, but im not sure it mattered. he wanted in the endzone more than we wanted him out. best play ive seen in quite a while.
  5. ah, our tax dollars at work..... the molding of america's future minds via coacht
  6. great point. you can be a veer team at heart but must change with the times. look at navy vs notre dame last week. navy has been triple option for yrs, but they run all sorts of formations. not re-inventing the wheel, just tweaking it a bit, just like cnc. defenses were the inferior athletes/skill players for a long time in high school and to some extent in college--into the 80s-- ...not so any more.
  7. you get my drift. don't be so literal. i'm talking about running 'right red 14' and 'left blue 14' 90% of the time. the true veer offense has not been run one bit at JC this year, and really hasn't been since coach Anthony left-- brimer has no feel for his opponent and does a bad job setting up plays. you are right, we have to throw the ball a little more. and, in addition, the option plays a pretty big part in the option. thats been lost along the way as well. you're right the veer does work when run correctly, but using a few plays over and over will not exploit a defense. yes, we must do better tackling. by far our weakest link so to speak.
  8. We were outplayed, and more importantly, outcoached vs. a superior Bearden team, and are playing a seemingly better team on Friday. As i have said since early in the season, we do not know how to tackle people. if we dont learn by Friday we will be in for a long night. if we hold sterling somewhat in check-- i.e. limit his yards after contact, we may make it respectable. thats a big if-- he is a great back. sorry to say, farragut roles. it would be nice to see buster empty the playbook to at least put up a fight. the win by the veer die by the veer is getting old.
  9. thats crazy. the 3AAA state champ last year was Maryville. and although they didnt make it to the final game, Bradley Central had arguably the top team in the state over the course of the year and ran into a hot Maryville team in murfreesboro. We might not have as many D1 prospects in the East, and athletically, you are right, the West has more of it... but in HS bball team play and coaching are pretty darn important. Do i think DB will win state?...No. Will they make a run, probably. But like you said, they are still relatively young. Next year would be the better bet in my opinion. Can't wait to make the drive up 81 to see the SH DB game!!
  10. you're right, its been a few years since we have thrown in a crazy play or two. we will need something like that against our playoff opponent though. i don't like our chances of lining up and going toe to toe with WB or farragut come round 1. playing WB would be interesting and the talk would be abundant. but it might center more on "fair weather meadows" vice the kids.
  11. great point. i would hope that we would work on a few things in a game time environment. this is not a must win, we should test out a couple of things and work on scenerios if given the opportunity. don't get me wrong, we need to play to win, but next week is when it counts. however, i wouldn't recommend opening up the playbook all the way. WB and Farragut will get this game film and we don't want to show all of our tricks that may be needed in round 1. the coaches are smart, they know this. hopefully, JC hasn't spent 2 weeks preparing for only Bearden. I know we don't know who we have in round 1, but 2 weeks on a game that doesn't mean all that much would be unwise in my book. On another note, do we (coaches, players, fans) have a preference of who we play week 1? (I know the coaches and players will say publically that they don't care who they suit up against) Just searching for opinions and any insider info that may be out there.
  12. i don't believe there will be any let up on Friday from either team. Bearden probably does want to "sweep the region." and JC wants to stay hot and keep the winning streak heading into the playoffs. I remember talking to other fans and a few JC coaches after the Karns win and all wanted the same thing-- continued improvement. We have accomplished that and are now in the playoffs-- preseason goal accomplished. That being said, i believe this game means more to us than it does to Bearden b/c we are a team that is going to need the momentum heading into playoffs a little more. however, it is pretty clear that bearden has the better team. i don't expect a JC win. rather, i see this as a great measuring stick game for us. JC needs a close game, win or lose, to show we can play with the upper echelon. we are going to have a tough opening round matchup and need all the confidence we can get. go pats. play hard (all 4 quarters!!)
  13. both teams are playoff bound. i know its a little early to start the thread, but how do they match up next friday?
  14. Jeff Co has been much improved and should be back in the playoffs for the first time in a few years.
  15. and it wasn't a gutsy call by gut (sorry, it was too easy). always go for a win on the road. dont get me wrong, it was a huge play for us. win, we are probably in. lose, definately not. but you are always supposed to go for the win on the road. that mantra has gone away to a certain extent in the last decade with the OT being introduced in college. but SC had the momentum. i would rather not play back and forth with a team like that. good call, easy call.
  16. our secondary is definately the weak link. and i know that we got mixed up a lot on coverage. however, thats coaching and nothing else. poor job getting the D prepared for what SC might throw at us. they have spread it out for years and i find it hard to believe the D got coached up on that this week then just forgot what they were doing during the game. i disagree with you a little though JC4. if a qb can pick us apart with quick hitters, i will let him. we dont have the athletes to play bump and run. if the qb completes 25 passes on the stop route and slants and beats us then so be it. i do see your point though, we play so far off the WR have tons of time to set up moves, so the deep ball is an option too. hitch and goes will kill us b/c our corners have to run 10 yards to cover that fake... and once they start upfield, its over if the qb can place a decent throw. as a former guy who caught passes in HS and college, you dream of playing secondaries like ours. back to the UT game... speaking of bad secondaries......
  17. that would be nice, but logistically it would be a nightmare. i.e. Kingsport DB traveling to shelby co. only way to circumvent that problem would be to kill homefield advantage and play playoff games at neutral sites.
  18. great post. saw him play last year. he's the real deal. wish we could have kept him in state, but UT is pretty deep at QB right now. thought he'd be a good fit at UK too, but should do well at UW. based on what i've seen he should be 4A Mr football. being up in the NE may hurt him a little, but he should take it fairly easily i would imagine.
  19. who's recruiting sterling? i read marshall, cinnci, and miss st a while back. any updates? new schools? decisions? he's putting up some great numbers in a tough region. based upon who i've seen in person, he's my pick for Mr Football.
  20. that is interesting. why is that so??? coaching?? who is the freshman coach?
  21. it is very important for the kids to get acclamated to the varsity schemes, assignments, etc. individual improvement is also obviously key. however, establishing a winning tradition/mentality at a school among the players is equally key. get kids winning early often brings in an important mentality to the program (though not to say that it is essential in developing a winning varsity team). W's gets them excited about playing for their school and developing a bond with their classmates. also gets fellow freshman to come out play... huge freshman classes are great to see. i will grant you this one though, when the head coach is watching from the press box, he is looking at talent, work ethic, passion, etc. thats often the only time he gets to personally "scout" his freshman class.
  22. we have to come out and play 4 quarters. i have yet to see us put together a complete game. when we do, we will be a different team on a different level. we caught the breaks we needed vs Science Hill... teams dont always get all the breaks though. science hill was a great win and its importance cannot be diminished but it was handed to us. sevier co is a tough place to play (as was stated earlier, the field takes getting used to--important to have a good warmup!!), but we have a little momentum going and, i believe, have the better team. just have to go out and play hard for 4 quarters and continue to eliminate mistakes.
  23. Sevier Co is always a boring week on Coach T. Looking forward to a great game
