  1. Yes, he was a great athlete, but most importantly, he is a fine man who knows how to mentor and love his athletes well. Another thing that makes him a great coach is that he has gathered a great staff of coaches who he lets do their job. He is a very good team leader.
  2. Just looked at UT's roster. Impressive the representation from Knox Cath. Also, CPA has won 34 regular season games in a row, and is 55-4 since Coach Martin arrived.
  3. At least someone is back to talking about CPA and Catholic, and not CAK and Catholic.
  4. The weather looks like it will be great. Hope there is a big crowd at Vandy. Should be a great game. CPA really did not have the pass much in their game plan due to the strength of Peachtree being their defensive backfield. I would expect CPA to open up a bit more this week, but Martin is a bit old school in that he runs first until the other team stops it. CPA's first 5 games are like playoff games in terms of competition. If they can stay healthy, will be great preparation for the playoffs.
  5. Agree. Not real sure who Armor is, but may be a student or poser from another school trying to stir things up. I think 3A has 4-5 serious contenders this year.
  6. Watched the game online. No way, based on numbers and talent, CPA should have won this game. Peachtree is a school of 3,200 (CPA less than 500), has 5-6 D1 signees and the #1 rated junior in Ga.. The difference was discipline, fundamentals, and coaching. Peachtree just kept making mistakes and bad decisions. CPA held them scoreless in the first half, then responded to every Peachtree score with one of their own. I really believe Peachtree looked across to the other sideline and did not see a team that they thought could beat them. It took them getting down 28-7 before they realized this little school from Tennessee was for real. CPA's defense was really impressive.
  7. Ok, Booger, here you go for 2014 (don't know 2013). Weatherly 1765 yards, 29 TD's, 3 INT. And he probably played less than 3 qtrs. avg. per game.
  8. No one has mentioned Weatherly from CPA, so I will. 2nd rated PRO style QB in the state and #23 overall by 247 Sports. http://247sports.com/Season/2016-Football/RecruitRankings?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool&State=TN and the 5th rated (48 overall) in Rivals http://sports.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/recruit-search-results?year=2016&sport_id=1&sport=football&keywords=Tennessee Great athlete, too. Won the state high jump as a soph. and 3rd as a jr.
  9. Hockaday who signed with Vandy. Was title game MVP. Played mostly LB until Alcoa game.
  10. Stats are such a bad indicator of the quality of a high school player unless they play a really demanding schedule. Weatherly at CPA last year did not have big stats but he only averaged playing about a half a game. Look what Hockaday did against the 2nd best defense in the state in the championship game, but he didn't even have 1,000 yards in the regular season. CPA plays a much tougher schedule this year with Peachtree (Ga.), Ensworth, Knox. Cath., East, Pearl Cohn. It will be interesting to see Weatherly's stats for those games. of course, you have to have a line and receivers as well.
  11. I cannot imagine a more miserable life than to sit back and wait for opportunities to hate. of course, I guess if you are perfect, you can be the judge. "God's truth judges created things out of love, and Satan's truth judges them out of envy and hatred." Dietrich Bonhoeffer
  12. This thread about the AA State Tourney is SO informative - unfortunately, not in terms of learning anything about the state tourney.
  13. I hesitate to criticize a coaching staff and players who had a fantastic year and have done such a great job making CPA girls true champions; however, I went to the Regional Finals game and I have never seen a team manage a lead as poorly as CPA did that night. They were up 15 going into the 4th quarter, and from that point forward they played as if they were 15 points down. They gave up the lead and were lucky to win due to 2 unforced errors by Giles Co. late. CPA, with the big lead, played like they were behind, not ahead, 15. They were throwing up quick, long 3 point shots, forcing shots against pressure in transition, driving to the basket against a set defense. Once they had 2 possessions, were not being defended closely, and used a total of 20 second on the clock. The guards with the ball out front were not even being defended closely and they were forcing their offense when they could have just held the ball. It was amazing to watch. So, seeing CPA led last night by 6 going into the 4th and losing did not surprise me. Still, great season by a great group.
  14. I agree, GB. HS refs struggle calling a game played at the pace, intensity, and skill level that this game was played. Lots of great athletes, tight defense, picks, shots being contested. The problem was that they did not establish early how the game was going to be called, and they would call some they shouldn't and others they should. As far as it favoring either team or preventing CW from winning, that is ridiculous. If they had called the game tight and every foul the home crowd thought CPA committed, the CW guard that defended Campbell would have fouled out in a quarter. Actually until the end, CPA had more fouls than CW. With that said, CW was very impressive and will have a shot in Murf. if they shoot well. Lots of great athletes that play very hard. Their lack of size inside hurts them on defense, not so much offensively. Great crowd and atmosphere. Others may not like CPA in public arena (I get it) but look what excitement it brought to Charlotte last night. Thanks for being great region hosts, CW.
  15. I think if CPA gets past Waverly tonight Creekwood will beat them. However, I think CPA will win the substate on the road and both Creekwood and CPA will be in the state.
  16. Winning the region can be very critical as the loser will probably have to play at East Nashville - a daunting task. Beating Creekwood at home could be very tough, even for CPA.
  17. Glad to hear this. He is a highly underrated prospect, IMO. Has all the tools to develop into a great player. Good heighth, great speed and quickness, very smart and grounded, body frame that will handle 22-230 lbs easily, and loves to hit. He is a prototype strong safety.
  18. I agree. District 10 was much more competitive and all the schools closer with better crowds, for the most part. CPA did not want to be moved to District 12. That was done by TSSAA beyond their control or wishes. CPA does reach out to close schools, private and public, for non-district games. They have no control over district schedule, and apart from that, they schedule really good teams, both in and out of state.
  19. CPA held on barely to beat Ensworth tonight 52-51. CPA led all but about 2 minutes of the game, the biggest lead was about 9. Ensworth never quite, made some great clutch shots and plays, and had a chance to inbound and win at the end, barely missing a three at the buzzer. Most of Ensworth's players are also football players, so their record is a bit misleading as their players get back in basketball mode and shape after the state championship football game. I believe they will make some noise in the tournament. They are a very good team, and CPA did not play very well. Blackwell was invisible in the first half but had a couple of big plays in the clutch in the 2nd half. It was the biggest crowd I have ever seen in the CPA gym with more than standing room only. Great rivalry and a great game between two teams about 5 miles apart.
  20. I just noticed the D12 tourney is at Marshall County and the Region is at Creekwood. This makes CPA's road to the state much more difficult, and, IMO, makes Creekwood the favorite to win the Region. However, if Creekwood does beat CPA in the Region finals, I beleive CPA would win a road substate game. Some interesting games coming up!
  21. Went to CPA / Marshall County game last night. CPA, IMO, is certainly beatable by Creekwood and probably 5-6 other AA teams in TN. Not that I think 5-6 other teams are better than them, but that, if CPA doesn't play well (especially shoot well), they are beatable. The reason is that CPA does not have the defensive skills they have had in the past. When they struggle scoring, their transition defense is poor. Also, Blackwell can be very hot and cold at times, and can hurt the team trying to take over when the game is close. Of course, he can also dominate at times. MC is a very good team and still lost by 18. It would have been worse if MC had not shot very well at the FT line, and CPA missed a lot of free throws and easy inside baskets.
  22. Gonna go out on a limb and say Waverly beats Creekwood next week.
  23. Don't think they played. CPA did beat Kenwood last year, I think. CPA will get better every game this year barring injuries. Howell is a very good player and very strong inside and has just played a week. Campbell gets better every game. They may not be down a notch.
  24. Reminds me a bit of the threads started in past years about CPA/Cheatham County. The fact remains CPA has lost 2 games to Tenn. teams in the last 110+ games. Creekwood may well be better and beat CPA, but CPA - down a notch?? - just beat Southwinds on the road, and has played 12 teams (8-4) that, IMO, are as good as Creekwood. Lot of season left, though.
  25. I bet the combined ages of the CPA starters was less than the combined ages of the Southwind or Oak Hill or Hamilton starters. So what?
