  6. This year the third round will be played in the East. Next year in the West. From T$$AA website In all play-off games, in the first and second rounds the higher seeded team shall be the host school. In the third round and semifinals in odd-numbered years the top team in each bracket shall be the host team. In even-numbered years the procedure shall be rotated in the third round and semifinals. However, in the third round if two teams from the same region play each other, the higher seeded team shall be the host.

No question Hampton is #1. Understand they have scheduled Oak Ridge, Maryville, Knox Catholic and Alcoa as their out of region games for next year.
  9. Glee – I didn’t think you were knocking anyone. I just meant to comment on the phrase. Everyone “wants it” but the rewards usually go to those who do something about it. I have watched many talented players (in all sports) over the years but those who had the greatest success were those who worked at their game year round. I fully agree that off season work will prevent many in season injury problems. Zack is a wonderful example of one who has worked hard in the off season and I would be willing to bet that his recovery time will be short. I only wish that Charles’s injury was such that we could hope that he will be back soon.
  10. After watching athletics in Upper East Tennessee for the past 50 years I feel compelled to comment on the overuse of the phrase “want it”. I have never met a coach who didn’t want it. I have never known a player who didn’t “want it”. The question is do they want it when it’s not on the line. Players are made in the off-season when they do those sometimes routine and boring task such as running to build endurance and lifting weights to build strength. In the same way coaches are many times inhibited during the off-season by the demands of their teaching profession, other coaching assignments, and family obligations. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful sporting world if everyone involved both coaches and players in all sports spent 12 months of each year “wanting it”. Unfortunately in the off season other things seem to get in the way. It is only the exceptional athlete who spends their time each day during the off season doing the things that will help them for the next season. After each season ends they are off in another sport, spending time with their friends, opening the books which they have ignored forfor the past 10 weeks, or in general just chilling out. Now I’ll get off my soapbox and get to the subject at hand. It appears that five teams have a shot at making the playoffs from the Mountain Lakes Conference. Looking at each teams remaining schedule it would appear that South and TN Hi have the easiest road and East and Elizabethton would have the hardest remaining schedule while Johnson County could play the role of spoiler for either TN Hi or Elizabethton. The South – Elizabethton and the East – TN Hi game this Friday would appear pivotal for the teams involved. A win by both East and Elizabethton (both underdogs) would put a whole new light on the conference playoff picture. It is a strange year, only a few weeks ago it appeared that TN Hi was the odds on favorite to repeat as champions. I guess that’s why the games are played on the field and not in this forum. And to the subject at hand. The “kid” looked great in the Unicoi county game. If he plays as well this Friday night. . . . well the word might be UPSET at which I’ll let someone else take a shot.
  11. TO: Football Focker I am not sure who you think sunny smith is but it isn't me. I spell my name with an O not a U and I rarely comment on this forum.
  12. Bump - Note caught in the air not touching the ground.
  13. OK you guys who are familiar with the NHSF rules. During the Elizabethton - Tennessee High game on friday there were two blocked punts with different results on each play. #1 the receiving team blocked the punt which went straight up and came down near the line of scrimmage. the ball was caught in the air by a member of the kicking team and advanced for a 1st down for the kicking team. #2 the receiving team blocked the punt and the kick came down near the line of scrimmage the kicking team caught the ball in the air but the it was ruled dead at that point (apparently) and the receiving team awarded possession. Does where the ball come down relative to the line of scrimmage determine whether the kicking team may advance the ball or not? I didn't see any other factors such as a fair catch signal. I always thought that the point of first touching would award the ball to the receiving team at that point. is there some rule about the punt crossing the line of scrimmage before that touching? Have at it.
  14. 1tshelley - Scheduling is largely controlled by our good friends at T$$AA. They set aside weeks for scheduling regional games. This accounts for 7 games which gives you only 4 weeks out of 11 to get in your non-regional games. The region sets up the schedule for those 7 games. Who you play the other three weeks is a combination of who is available and what you consider the "best" in your situation. Elizabethton has a long series with Greeneville (Reg 2 - 4A). Similar schools about the same size and generally the same level of play. That leaves 2 weeks to fill. Now who would you play? A close 1-A (ie Hampton, Cloudland, Unaka), a close 2-A (Happy Valley), a close 3-A (none), A fairly close 4-A (Boone, Crockett), a more distant 4-A, or a close 5-a (Science Hill, Kingsport). In making that decision remember that football pays the athletic bills. The 1-A thru 4-A options will result in a visiting attendance of less than 1000. The 5-A option will have a visiting attendance of greater than 3000. This is not rocket science. In addition if you go back in T$$AA history prior to the 70's -- the old big 5 conference was Elizabethton, TN Hi, Unicoi Co, and you guessed it Science Hill and DB. A lot of history to stir the intrest of fans. I agree that Science Hill, DB and Tn Hi is a heck of a way to start the season but that's the way the cookie crumbles.
  15. GLee I said the same thing last night at halftime about running out the clock. In the cold clear light of morning I am not so sure. There was about 2 1/2 minutes on the clock. If memory serves me correct that is about the same amount of time as the last drive of the ballgame (70 yd). Also the Cyclones moved the ball 40 yds (-5 penalty and -5 loss - Net 30) in less than a minute following the return and TD. It's easy to say that it is obvious during halftime and not so obvious in the A.M. I agree with you that the Cyclones made great strides during the week. I expect nothing less than their best effort against Tenn HI. Vike The celebration penality was assessed on the extra point which resulted in a run which failed. rvd had the best pick on the score but I can't agree that 5-5. I see a 7-3 season with 8-2 a distinct possability. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 3 way tie between Tn. Hi, South, and EHS
  16. Go back and read the tricitiessports article one more time. The Reg 1 AAAA Jamboree is at South not at DB. No DB is charging $3. I guess that is for all the high tech equipment you have been using lately.
  17. From the Lost State of Franklin a District 1 battle between class 5A Dobyns Bennett and class 4A Elizabethton as they renew an old rivalry (O week). In week 1 class 5A Science Hill and Elizabethton.

  23. Obviously Danny O'Quinn isn't too bad either having both his boy's and girls team in the final four. GO CYCLONES! thumb
  24. In A/AA from the Lost State of Franklin it is the Elizabethton Cyclones. Both boys and girls teams qualified for the state meet in Section 1. Girls 4 - 3 over CAK and the Boys 4 - 0 also over CAK.
