  1. Brent Peel announced as new Jellico Head Football Coach and Scott Meadows named as new Carter Head Coach
  2. There are many articles about multi sport athletes as well as evidence of college recruiters showing interest in the same. It is true that you could get injured playing other sports however athletes playing multiple sports will have fewer overuse injuries; better chance to avoid emotional burnout; and not to mention the opportunities to be in different roles to help with adulting. A starting Pitcher may be a back up forward on the basketball team exposing the athlete to different perspectives of participation and leadership. Descent article on NFHS site about it: BLUF: "Because the majority of our youth athletes can benefit greatly from multi-sport participation, it is important to create a department philosophy and culture that encourages our students to stay involved in activities." https://nfhs.org/articles/the-importance-of-multi-sport-participation/ The evidence for single sport specialization is: 87% of DI women gymnastics had specialized in the sport by the age of 12. 68% of DI men’s soccer players and 62% of DI women’s soccer players were one-sport soccer athletes by 12. 66% of DI men’s tennis players and 75% of DI women’s tennis players specialized in their sport by age 12. 55% of DI men’s ice hockey players specialized in their sport by age 12. The evidence against single sport specialization is: 71% of DI men’s football players were multisport athletes. 88% of DI men and 83% of DI women who play lacrosse also played other sports. 87% of DI female runners and 91% of DI male runners were multisport athletes. https://usatodayhss.com/2017/a-few-surprises-in-the-data-behind-single-sport-and-multisport-athletes Specializing or not is a an athletes prerogative. As coaches we should present both sides and assist the student, not sway the student based on bias. As the later article suggests "Who wouldn’t want the speed of a sprinter with the hand-eye coordination of a baseball player on their team?"
  3. 1AfootballMan started a good thread on 20 July this year revolving around the same question. Jellico has a current call for the position noted on this site but not on the TSSAA site. (Jellico High School has an opening for a Head Football Coach. Contact Dr. Donna Singley at donna.singley@ccpstn.net or Danny Oakes at danny.oakes@ccpstn.net (Posted 11-14-18)) I know of one applicant so far (not that I would know any applicants) but wonder if the limited announcement indicates maybe there is someone already in mind? You can likely deduce that this year’ series of unfortunate pre-season events will impact the Blue Devils for a couple of more years as the new Coach develops the team IAW his priorities. There may also be an unattended consequence with the feeder system as those young athletes look toward deciding to become Blue Devil football student athletes.
  4. Middle school head coach Mark Frazier has been hired to replace Jerry Lowery as the White County Warriors head coach.

  6. I wouldn't second guess another coach but I do agree with your assessment about the best 11 players needing to be on the field. Small division school teams typically can't platoon offense and defense in the same way larger programs can. There are some small programs like Martin Westview that carry 50+ on the roster, but they are the exception to the rule.
  7. I don't know much about the community and the support. Tellico seems like a nice small community. Any issues not readily seen by someone not from the area?
  8. Funny, we never had that problem in the early 80's
  9. Fayetteville High School is seeking a Head Football Coach. Salary and other responsibilities negotiable depending on certification and experience. If you are interested, please contact Mr. Eric Jones, Principal, Fayetteville High School, 1800 Wilson Parkway, Fayetteville, TN 37334 or (931) 433-3158. Position open until filled. http://portal.tssaa.org/common/directory/detail.cfm?id=142
  10. So not knowing or seeing Jellico this year but following them since last years coaching situations, why are they considered worse than Copper and Sale?
  11. Boyd Buchanan School, a college preparatory school for students in grades K-12, is searching for a Head Varsity Football Coach. This is a full-time position that will be combined with additional administrative or teaching responsibilities. Applicant must align with the mission of Boyd Buchanan School in every regard. Interested applicants should send cover letter, resume and references to Athletic Director, Tommy Brown: tbrown@bbschool.org. http://portal.tssaa.org/common/bulletinboard/index.cfm?category=position

  13. Here is what we know. · The median home value is $52,600 with a median family income of $30,197. · The population is about 2,491 residents with 387 High School Students so you get the athletes you get. · Recently the coaching position was tied to a math certification which really puts a strangle hold on the applicant pool Anyone of those could be a dominant factor, but there are positives. · The community seems to value the Blue Devils Football team as evidenced by their picture on the town’s web page despite achieving a 28-114 win/loss record since 2004 and 1 playoff appearance. · The average school test scores in Jellico are 11% higher than the national average. · The median teacher salary at the HS is $41,320 plus coaching stipend. Not bad considering the IMHO the pieces are there to build a positive culture and bring a bit of swagger to being a Blue Devil. Army, Air Force and yes even Navy are small in comparison to DIV 1 programs but each one builds men of character who learn to fight and win. Jellico can too. Good luck to Head Coach Massengale and the Blue Devils this year.
  14. A tiny K-8 in Wilson County. That's what draws me to the 1A-2A schools. Those athletes deserve the same level of attention as the bigger programs get. https://southsidesaintsfootball.weebly.com/
  15. Our football coaching carousel doesn’t appear to be an anomaly. According to Carolinapreps.com, North Carolina has recorded the following for High School Head Football Coaches Leaving: YEAR CHANGES 2008-09 48 2009-10 77 2010-11 48 2011-12 74 2012-13 95 2013-14 88 2014-15 89 2015-16 83 2016-17 111 You can get addicted to moving every few years for sure. In my military career we moved 10 times (12 different houses) in about 22 years. Once you move a couple of times it becomes part of what you do. Now as a middle school head coach I have to fight that urge because of a commitment to the athletes and the program. That’s not to say never move but in my situation it means putting others ahead of what I want in many cases. Of course there are many factors that go into a coach leaving a program ie… forced out, better pay, more support from the administration, more family time….. all of them are reasons that each coach wrestles with but something appears to be happening making it more prevalent to move from school to school and unfortunately that opportunity presents itself at the inopportune time…..which is always!
  16. I though Tony Johnson was the Middle School Coach.
  17. BTW Fred Copeland (assistant coach from Stratford) has been hired to take over the Westwood program. Still no official word on Copper Basin.
  18. Katarii Donald from Kingsbury is Memphis East's new head football coach.
  19. Congrats to Matt Daniel as the Canon County Cougars new Head Coach
  20. I may be in the minority but I like both the Cannon County and Coper Basin situations. Copper has had a solid coach who appears to have left the HC job to focus on family and with the CC job those players deserve a change in culture. Having recently retired from the military I think both programs could be a challenge well worth the time for a coach looking to build a culture around what football can do for a student athlete.
