Players , of note , to see in this tournament are a guard #10 from Buckeye Valley, an underrated team from Hampton who played very well, Kortni Hester and a great supporting cast from DCA, a very well coached team from South Doyle who if playing anyone else except DCA would have been a winner yesterday, Ft. Payne who has a post player who has committed to South Alabama, and a potentially very, very good Cannon County team who will make some noise in the exceptionally strong Class AA in Tennessee. While playing good, it was difficult to get a fix on the host team Siegel as their game was out of range by half time. It was very evident that Greenback was better than they played but had the first day drag with travel time and playing the first game. An opportunity to see some of the best teams in Tennessee and teams from other states to see how they compare to the Tennessee teams is particularly interesting as visitors from the Boro and Nashville

were seen taking in this great sporting event and the matchups today should be

some of the best of the tournament.

Watched the DCA - South Doyle game, it was a fun game to watch. DCA press gave SD girls fits and caused turnovers, and I thought it got SD trying to hurry too much. SD never seemed to adjust to it. SD does have a good post game, but you have to be able to get it there.

I only caught the first half of the Ft. Payne - Cannon Co. game, and it was exciting. I was not surprised to look at the paper and find it was a tight game. They both played hard and are good teams.

I caught the overtime game, in overtime, that was an exciting finish. I thought Hampton hurried the last shot to tie, but they were both exciting to watch.

I missed the opener, but I think Greenback is probably better than they showed, but siegel is a good team.

You keep saying an underrated team from Hampton. They lack a post to stop a good post or to score on a big post. Pittman is the player and Oliver is a streaky shooter. What has led you to repeat the underrated team Hampton?

I don't think Hampton is underrated. They are a small scrappy single A team from District 1. Lacey Oliver is a streaky 3 point shooter, Lauren Pittman is a solid all-around wing, Jessi Price is a tough undersized post, and Mikki Oliver is a promising freshman point guard. They have a couple of other nice role players, but very little size or depth. They will battle Cloudland, Unaka, and possibly North Greene for the district title and will make the region. The sub-state and state would probably be a stretch.

After watching them last night, I would agree to this. They are scrappy, but I did not see them as a state contender. :thumb:

Hampton defeated Greenback today, a close game into the third and Hampton turned it on.

South Doyle defeated Cannon County 52-50. Cannon could not hit a free throw in this game but a well played game on both sides.

Coach Bush and staff have done a great job running this tourney, congrats to the coaches, players, support staff and other people involved with Siegel athletics in running this tourney.

It's DCA vs Siegel in the championship game at 6:30 at Siegel. This is a rematch of last year Southern Star Tournament. Good Luck Ladies.

The Siegel Southern Classic goes in to its last day with the anticipation of the last games to determine not only the places of finish of the Tournament but with the anticipation of something to build the rest of the season. All of the teams played better the second day than they did tne first was a concensus opinion. Games were played hard and in that atmosphere calls were contested from both sides of each contest. It was again easy to see the talent step up on all teams. The Ft. Payne/DCA game, the last of the day, was a highly fought game and one that saw the very talented Kortni Hester spend quite a bit of time on the bench with fouls along with the very talented post player from Ft. Payne and all of the fans discovered that these were two teams that had a great deal of talent besides these two fine players. It was unfortunate that either team had to lose.

Siegel played probably their best overall game of the season and displayed a very potent offense with TJ Jones and Anna Grace Gerhart leading the way and Carrie Parrot playing the best game, both rebounding and scoring, she has had this season. The most dominent part of Siegels game was on defense as the Ohio team could never figure out Siegels multifacited defense and only scored 32 points while Siegel ran to 67. The Ohio team was certainly a better team that the one that showed up last night and ended the game determined to come back tomorrow to show the tournament the skills of its team. As the night before,i t was difficult to access how good this Siegel team really is but the true test is tonite against DCA, last years winner. This will be a super game, one of which the whole Mid State should be interested. The nature of these two teams is they will both go for the jugular and will try to play the other off the floor. Both teams, with their bench, play about 9 players and substitute freely. Both are extremely well coached and both teams have something to prove. Both will press the other from the time they leave their dressing room. DCA is a little quicker and Siegel is relentless.

The Midstate has an opportunity to see now, two teams that are playing close to the top of their classifications, AA and AAA. It is that typical clash. DCA will bring their typical crowd, loud and partison and Siegel, due to a lot of teams playing out of the Boro this week, will muster the best support this young school can attract.

This game and the many other games with top teams will fill out the rest of the day. It is a shame that this is the last day for the teams from Cannon County, Greenback, Hampton, South Doyle, along with Ft. Payne from Alabama and Gordon from Ohio, and their coaches have put on a show. All will agree. They came to win. It has been intense.

It starts about 1:30 and ends at the end of the 6:30 finals.

What seems to be underrated about Hampton is not their individual players but somehow as a team, at the end of the game they may not win but they have the respect of the fans in how they keep plugging and trying to find a way to win. That trying to find a way to win speaks well for the character of a team but that characteristic is found in a lot of the teams in this tourney and is only apparent when it is not there. Good luck to the rest of the teams at this tourney and have a safe trip back home when the tourney is over.

Coach Bush and staff have done a great job running this tourney, congrats to the coaches, players, support staff and other people involved with Siegel athletics in running this tourney.

Coach Bush, Assistant Coach Maxwell and Coach Seals have proved time and again their search for excellence in everything they do at Siegel. They are supported by the Siegel Administration that requires excellence. Whether it is teaching basketball and life with their teams or with their in house Team Camps or Skills Camps in the summer or their Tourneys during the school year, they attempt to make them an event that every participant will learn and every team can grow .

As an example, Danielle Spurlock, who is still learning to be a great player, is a good player. Two years ago her family moved to the Boro. Danielle is a growing 6'0 C/PF player with a very good outside touch. I believe she will agree that she has just started to grow in the last two years, to potentially be a great player. Her skills have been enhanced the past two years to the degree that the mental aspects of the game are the major thing needed. To watch this coaching staff and the results of taking a school that had no team to where it is in three years is truly inspieing. Sure they had some advantage in zoning issues but the first year they had very few wins and wound up at he end of the year with 6 players and many

quitting and giving up. Coach Bush's team has learned their relentless style of defense from a staff who have had to exhibit the same patient skills to now have only three of the orginal group they started with but with an overall group that many very likely to have the skills to play at another level but that is another story. Danielle Spurlock is one of those cases.

Every team in this tournament has those stories and it has been very inspiring to watch the men and women display their craft and to visually see what the coaching profession is creating with the hard work they do. Coaches can be and are very important to their constituants. Ask the folks at Cannon County. Great Job Coach Bush and a Great Tournament.
