Are Coaches?

Recommended Posts

themselves out of buisness?

I ask this as in a bunch of threads I see so and so coach could not be afforded by such and such school.

Does that mean they are either asking to much or what? I know that a few places are thinking about scaling back athletics across the board, so should coaches re-think what they feel they are worth?

Don't get me wrong because I believe anyone in ANY job should be paid as much as they can get, but there has to be a realistic limit. And NO I am not just thinking about one coach. There have been a couple this has been mentioned about.

For example should a coach for a 'PUBLIC' school make $100,000.00 a year? Heck should ANY coach in a High School make that much?

Coaches I am NOT starting this to make y'all mad, but as a taxpayer it needs to be discussed.

Football coaches are "asked" to be the bell-cow for the entire athletic program in order to fund the non-revenue-producing sports. In most cases, the school uses the funds raised through the Football Program to fund in-part or entirely, general school ventures. Not to mention the countless hours of "off-season" preparations to continue the success of the program and the many other things like: transporting kids home from practice, making sure they're making the grades to be eligible, monitoring kids' discipline, trying to get athletes into college, the list goes on and on.

Plus, how do you put a price on time spent away from family? During Football Season you leave in the morning before the family is awake, when its dark outside, and return after the family is asleep. Week after week after week.

$100,000.00, yeah, a good, caring, & motivated Head COACH is worth every penny!

I'll say this.

I do not know what any coach is worth, but - for the time and effort they put into their job, which extends more than just Friday nights and weekday afternoon practice - they do not make what they are worth now in most instances.

One coach told me best - "you don't do this for the money, believe me, you do this to make a difference in kids' lives"

I don't think that any one coach's time away from his home is any more valuable than anothers that is doing the same. Therefore if one gets 100,000......all should.

I think it should return to olden times anyway......when it wasn't such a business to coach. Winning is awesome and don't get me wrong...memorable....but I desire the HC to teach some values to the players. So many of them these days have no father figure in their lives and their coach should mean everything to them.

My son has a ring......and he cherishes it to this day. However, he would have taken a bullet for any of his coaches. They helped to mold him into the man he is today. To me that is priceless, and I will be eternally grateful to them.

2priceless,

I think they call that socialism and the Soviet Union has already fallen. Just like in your profession there are people worth more and people worth less. This is determined by many factors...the least of which is how many hours they spend at the office. Is a college coach worth $3M a year? Is a woamn's basketball coach worth $1.5M? Is a pitcher worth $20M or a quarteback worth $25M? You can have this agument about any profession. It is much like housing. The market sets the price. A coach is worth what he can get someone to pay him and he is only being overpaid by the amount the 2nd highest offer was or would be. I think most people would be surprised at how little coaches actually are making and most are teaching a pretty full schedule as well. I don't think any of them are getting into coaching because they see it as a great opportunity to be wealthy. I think most still do it for the right reasons.

I agree with a lot that you said. I wasn't trying to say that every coach cared as much as others. I know for a fact that simply isn't true.

It is b/c of all the inflated pro salaries and college salaries that these ideas get in some of these HS coaches heads that they should be demanding such big bucks.

I think some teachers could argue that they spend as many hrs on grading papers and their extra non-paid duties as a coach does too. Plus lots of them are teaching full loads so some of the HC's can have extra planning time. This argument could go on and on and on....

It is my understanding that Gaddis at Henry County does well but he has extra duties attached to his job and is rumored to make 80,000. Several coaches are administrators or athletic directors and head coaches and make in the 60-70's. I know of no public school HC making six figures, but I may not be informed. I assure you they would be the exception not the rule. In some cases booster clubs pitch for part of the salary, which I would not like personally.

Actually, the Soviet Union was a "communist" nation. Communism tries to create a society based on equatlity for everyone and a government that will take care of a persons' physical needs provided they give up some of their freedoms. Also, under communism, most everything is owned and operated by "the state" and everyone and everything should be working toward the good of the country.

Socialism on the other hand, bases their ideals on creating classes in society. Nazi Germany had a "socialist" government and were able to say that this group is at the top, while this group is at the bottem and expendable and various stations in between. Under Socialism, all major industries are controlled by the govenment, but private ownership of smaller businesses is allowed.

I know a few years ago I saw a newspaper article out of Atlanta that showed what every head football coach in the state made. I don't remember any six-figure guys but I do remember several in the 70, 80 and 90 thousand dollar range. I also know that coaching supplements in GA are structured like colleges. The head coach may make as much as 20-25 thousand over his teaching pay, coordinators make an extra 10-12 thousand and the regular assistants make 5-8 thousand more. I also know some Tenn. high school assistants that make about 1500 extra. That's a bunch of #$!@#!@

Private school wise I've heard Bowers at Ensworth made 90+ while at MBA.

Do I think all head coaches should make that much.......no way

Do some deserve it.........yes.

Answer the following job description and see what you'd be worth?

WANTED:

Also in charge of motivation, weighttraining, ordering equipment, reconditioning of equipment; field upkeep which may or may not include mowing fertilizing, spreading sand, new sod, and lining before the games; fundraising, booster club liasion, medical expert, psychologist, preacher of morals and good citizenship, painter, janitor, public speaker, thick-skinned target of mad parents, negotiator with sorry referees, must be able to hire new coaches and fire bad ones. Listen to teaches complain about your football players, etc.

Who's to say what they're worth?
