McMinn Central

The players are very happy and I hear the coaches are in good spirits too. The Chargers looked great! McMinn is a 5A school & so they should have a higher percentage of good athletes than a 3A school does, that's to be expected. But excluding the three scores by McDermott (a D1 prospect for McMinn), Central really shut them down. Central's coaches cut their best player a few weeks ago because he couldn't comply with the new program rules (according to other players) and had some other seasoned players quit because the new rules are too hard (according to other players).

So, a fractured 3A team with a new coach with nine days of practice for some and only 1 day of practice for the baseball players that held a 5A "rival" with a D1 prospect to only 3 scores (all made by that D1 prospect)...sounds like it's going pretty good to me! What do you think?

Well, it's hard to tell. To say Central holding McMinn to only three scores might sound good, but I think they only had the ball for four possessions. Three ended in scores and the 4th was a 4th and 1 where McMinn coach called a naked bootleg and Central didn't bite on the fake. With that said, I think it's hard to tell how good Central will be- like you said they have only been with the new coach for 9 days. I also think Central will see several freshmen in lineup this fall, so that will be a factor as well. Let's see how they look in fall scrimmages before making a decision on what kind of team Central will have this year. Best of luck-

Derrick's quote in the newspaper when he took the job was that his intent was to control the time of possession & limit the other team's offense. It looks like they did that pretty well, but I think McMinn actually had 6 possessions. McMinn definitely has a talented team. Most people that I've talked to were surprised that Central held their own & moved the ball. I don't think anybody has decided how Central will be this fall, but most people agree that if their performance against McMinn is an indicator, they'll do pretty good against teams their own size. Unfortunately they start playing season games the first week of school, so they won't have much time together as a team under the new coach before they're put to the test.
