Volleyball Lesson

I had the opportunity to attend the Siegel vs Blackman match tonight and left feeling good about the sport and the young people involved. Siegel won the match in 3 games, but watching the Blackman girls was a wonderful experience. They are a team with lots of underclassmen who have not had the most successful season by some people's standards. It is my understanding that they did not win a match at the Brentwood Tournament this past week end. They have some wins, but they have had their share of losses, as well.

 

These young ladies are as talented a defensive team as anyone. Like many young teams they do not have much of a power game, yet. I admired their enthusiasm, intensity and attitude. After dropping the first two games to Siegel, the prohibitive favorite in the match, handily, they came out and fought and clawed in the third game when many other teams would have given up. They cheered wildly for their team mates and never seemed to get down, even when a close call went against them. These girls are all winners, taking the most important lessons the sport has to teach to heart. They will be winners, regardless of the win and loss tally at the end of the season. We could all learn a valuable lesson from these optomistic and enthusiastic young ladies.

This is a reflection of the Blackman Coach, Mary Dayton. She is top notch in my book and if she stays in it long enough, will become the standard by which volleyball coaches in Tennessee are measured, along with Coach Neely, Coach Campbell, Coach Whitaker, Coach Cockerham, and etc.

You will not find a classier coach, or person for that matter, than Mary Dayton.

I, like the the rest, have watched the Blackman teams with much interest realizing that they are a young team and looking for the first glimmer of the team getting back to those days they and their fans want to get back to so badly. Lately, it appears that the steps taken by all of the Blackman VB community are certainly taking hold and the enthusiasm and work ethic are obvious. Mary Dayton has certainly made her mark, already, on Blackman VB not only on her team but for those who read her posts, on anyone who sees her enthusiasm and concern on this site. It has helped bring back the whole Blackman attitude, a once proud school that loved being competitive and played the part. Blackman is on its way back and its a reflection of the team and its Leader, Mary Dayton. Blackman is on its way back and is a reflection of its players and fans who are a reflection of whats great about VB in the BORO and in the game itself.

Excellent post! What is the world coming to? A rival fan giving praise to the opponent. Awesome! I love reading positive stories. Not about winning, but about witnessing players giving it all they've got because they're grateful they have the ability and talent to do so. Kudos to Coach Dayton and her team. I look forward to seeing them succeed in the future.
