eagle3612
Lets see on the average there are maybe 20 football players for every 300 students. Hmmm looks like the numbers are catching up and we ae now suffering from the "swirlies" and "wedgies" of our forefathers. REVENGE OF THE NERDS!!!!! Any serious candidates for this job? bigyomca
Hamstra will no longer coach football, will stay on staff. AD Carly Powers will become the new football coach.
pigskinred
It sounds like the coaches and athletes at Briarcrest are having to compete with one arm tied behind their back. Coach Powers is a good coach but there may be too many problems (read parent$, administration, etc.) to get the program turned around. As a former player from long ago, the things I hear make me sick. speakerbox2
Coach Powers is a great person, I had the pleasure of playing for him and with his son. He should be able to do good things with the teams. But based on what I'm hearing and being told by current and recent grads he is in for a struggle to have a decent program that directly conflicts with the direction of the school. What's going on is that the administration wants Briarcrest to become a 'liberal arts' school, with optional physical fitness programs after school. It's tough to swallow but it will all have to start from the top if the program is to be turned into a competitive program. Some of them think the sportsplex should be dug up and made into a performance arts and cultural studies center with an attached auditorium. Hmmm....... 2004-05 Div 2 AA State Champ alumni
crc
I have a friend whose daughter plays softball at BCHS. She told me the other day they are going to level the softball field to expand the campus. She said they had raised money to put lights on the field a few years ago and the softball parents are not happy at all about it. Have another friend with a son there and he said a lot of the big money boosters are pulling their kids and sending them to St. George's - maybe that's why St. George's is having such a good year in football! Sean BS
right now st. george's doesn't have any good ex-briarcrest players that i know of, but we will gladly take them! most of our best players have gone to st. george's since preschool. we are just very well-coached, and play in an easy league. is that thing about the letter jackets really true? wow. this whole thing sounds completely insane. "liberal arts" does not mean "no support for sports". what a great way to kill a high school.

"liberal arts" does not mean "no support for sports". what a great way to kill a high school. The letter jacket decision has been reversed after many complaints from parents and students. What I am hearing most recently was that anyone could buy the jackets that players use for letter jackets (without the letter) even if you aren't an athlete. I am also hearing that there are many middle school students looking to leave Briarcrest not just because of footbal, but the whole atmosphere has changed since Bill McGee came to the school. In addition I have heard that most, if not all, of the assistant coaches won't be coaching there next year either. The main one that needed to go other than Hamstra was the offensive coordinator Dodd Gengenbach and the defensive coach McGee. They will NOT be back on the sidelines and they have been told that. Gengenbach was the WORST excuse for an offensive coordinator in the history of high school football. It is no wonder St. George's fired him. He was horrible, didn't know what players to play in which positions and called the stupidest plays anyone has ever seen. In short he is a total loser. Coach Powers is a fine man and a good coach, however given the current administration's view on athletics he is going to have a very tough time turning it around, but I hope he can because like I said he is a good man. You need to take a deep breath before you post next time. To call someone a "total loser" is way out of line. Dodd may not fit your idea of a football coach, but to to attack someone personally is completely uncalled for on a message board like this. I personally know Coach Gengenbach and Coach Powers and both are fine men. I know you are embarassed to be associated with Briarcrest, but you need to take your personal attacks somewhere else. FYI - his leaving St. George's had nothing to do with the football team.
Sean BS
ah yeah, i forgot coach dodd was there. i just graduated from st georges last year and knew him pretty well. he was always a nice guy who genuinely cared about the students and was well-liked. as an AD he really got the athletic programs off the ground.
