at 2PM this afternoon, coach james counce announced to his team, that he is turning in his cleats......

coach counce has been coaching in west tennessee for 35 years.....

under his leadership, in the last 10 years at dyersburg, his teams have accomplished the following:

been in the playoffs every year....

3 quarter final appearances

2 semi final appearances

has won 87 games for a 8.7 games won each year average....

in the last two years in region 73A, his record his 22-3

coach counce has established a tradition of excellence....and he leaves the program in good shape.......

it will not be the wins or the losses that coach counce will be remembered for.....

he will be remembered for turning boys into men......

his greatest accomplishment is the respect that players (past and present) have for this man......

the greatest testament i have heard was from a father, who stated that coach counce taught his son more about being a man than he (the father) ever could.....that young man went on to play for and graduate from rhoades.....

we will miss you coach......good luck and remember....TOGETHER WE ATTACK.....

James Counce resigned as head football coach at Dyersburg High School this afternooin, ending a successful coaching career of 35 years, the last 11 spent at Dyersburg, where he built a faltering program into a state power.

Clutching his wife Donna to his side, Counce told seventy-plus football players and a crowd of close supporters, assistant coaches, and school officials of his decision. Players, coaches and fans wept openly as they received the news they had expected but dreaded since Counce suffered a heart attack during the sixth week of the 2006 season. Counce tearfully embraced each of his players as he bade them goodby. In spite of his hospitalization and surgery, he did not miss a single practice or game as the Trojans rolled to a 12-2 finish, losing to David Lipscomb in the state semi-finals. In 2005, Counce's team was a perfect 10-0 during the regular season, only to be upset in the first round of the state playoffs.

After going 3-7 in his first two seasons at Dyersburg, Counce's program moved into high gear, winning 87% of its remaining regular season games over the years,, reaching the state semifinals twice, and capturing 4 regional championships.

The Fulton, Kentucky native has always described himself as an "old school" coach, relying on stout defenses, potent running attacks, and hard-nosed football. His teams were always well-prepared, well-conditioned and made few mental mistakes. His reputation for getting maximum effort from his players and for winning games with inferior talent was widely-known and well-earned, and his work ethic inspired assistants and players to reach higher standards. In the dictionary, the word "coach" should have his picture alongside it; he exemplified what is best about the term and the game he loves.
