Cocke County releases 2007 football schedule

Jefferson County rivalry renewed

NEWPORT – Let the rivalry resume.

Cocke County High School head football coach David Crawford released the school’s 2007 regular season football schedule on Friday and the slate should give longtime Fighting ###### fans a reason to be excited.

Cocke County’s schedule will see the re-addition of long-time rival Jefferson County High School. The renewal of this rivalry comes after it was discontinued the past two seasons.

The two schools will match-up at Hedrick Field in Newport on September 28 in Week 5 of the 2007 season.

Renewing the rivalry between these two schools became a focal point shortly after David Crawford assumed the head coaching duties for Cocke County back in March.

“When we came on campus in March we really looked at re-establishing this rivalry between ourselves and Jefferson County,” Crawford said. “It’s a traditional rivalry and we really need to be playing a rival on our schedule. And having a rival on your schedule is on of the fun parts about coaching and playing.

”In talking to our (rising) seniors just this week, I found out that this (rivalry) is a much bigger deal that I anticipated,” Crawford said. “We’re really excited about reestablishing this game.”

The renewal of the Jefferson County series will also reunite Crawford and Jefferson County head coach Marty Euverard. The two have worked several clinics and coached against each other in Middle Tennessee.

Crawford’s Mt. Juliet team faced off with Euverard’s Murfreesboro-Oakland team in 2002 in Crawford’s first-year at the helm of the Golden Bears.

The lone remaining change to the Cocke County schedule is the addition of Walker Valley High School from Bradley County. Walker Valley is a Class 4A school from just outside of Cleveland and will enter the 2007 campaign coming off two seasons with a combined 1-19 record. The Mustangs are also currently in search for a head coach.

“They are a Class 4A school and we want to play other 4A or comparable schools on our schedule,” Crawford said. “They’re going through a coaching search and struggling a bit at the moment, but I feel like this will be a game where both schools can compete.”

Walker Valley will visit Cocke County in Week 3 with Cocke County making the return trip to Bradley County in the 2008 season.

“Playing Walker Valley takes us out of the area a little bit,” Crawford said. “And that makes things fun to play someone outside your region every now and then and it’s like an extended road trip.”

In the other Cocke County non-conference opening, the Big Red will continue their series with Seymour in the season-opener.

The start of the 2007 football season has also been pushed back one week. The TSSAA recently ruled that the football season will be pushed back one week on the schedule. So, virtually, Week 2 of the 2006 season would now become Week 1 of the 2007 season.

The Five Rivers Conference schedule remains the same for Cocke County, inverting home-and-away from last season, except for moving Volunteer to week two and Cherokee to week nine.

Cocke County returns a lot of experience on offense this year - which is good - because they lose a lot on defense.

The freshman game was probably so lopsided because that Offensive Line was not very good and then Cocke County lost their QB with the collarbone injury on their conversion attempt.

As for varsity, Cocke County will return a ton on offense. The offensive backfield returns intact with Quarterback Jake Crawford and backs Austin Graham and Jordan Keller. The offensive line is projected to return 3 to 4 starters from last year. They return all of their WRs - at least those who started in the last few games.

Defense is another story. They'll need some kids to step up big time.

Glad to see this! My boys play for Cosby but I support both schools. Jordan Keller is an awesome kid on the field and off! GOOD LUCK TO YA GUYS!!! KEEP SMILING !
