The best TN high school player was Jon Beavers, Hixson High 1988 grad. Hixson was only 10th-12th. Jon scored 62 career goals. Winning goal in the State Championship game. 86-88 Hixson only lost 4 games.

'88 record was 22-1-1 Only loss was on prom night when the JV played Oak Ridge in the finals of the O.R.Invitational and lost 2-0. Hixson beat O.R. in the state semi's to get revenge. Jon was All-State, All-American and the TN Gatorade Player of the Year. Went to ODU for college. Was offered an apprentice professional contract in Germany as a U16.

Matt Herbstritt is the best soccer player ever. He scored a school record 26 goals this season in leading the dawgs to a 2nd consecutive state title and a national championship. He scored two goals in the state championship game and had 2 assists and a goal in the semis. He was recently named Region MVP along with 9 other Bearden players on the team. Needless to say these are amazing statistics and he has one more year to improve on these stats. Many say he is going to be the next Michael Owen. Real Madrid has already contacted him about skipping college and turning pro.

There have been several players from Houston in the early 90s that could qualify. You could almost throw their names in a hat and draw to settle it. Ross Paule gets my vote. Him or a guy that played for Hendersonville in the mid 90s with the last name Glazer. Matt Herbsr....whatever is definately NOT the best player ever or from last season for that matter.

Matt Herbstritt played on my team, and yes he was the best players in the State last year. I dont care what you guys say. He had 29 goals(a Bearden Record) in 25 games. If my math is correct that is a little more than a goal a game. He also had 20 assists. He was all KIL MVP, All-District & All-Region MVP, 2x all-state, 2x all-south, MVP of the State Tournament, and MVP of Bearden High School Team. (#1 in the Nation). And yes he is being recruted by Notre Dame, College of Charleston, & UNCC. You cant say that he is not close to being good USPG... or whatever your name is.

I don't doubt that Matt is a very well balanced player. But you have to understand that there are about 4,000 soccer players in TN (All Divisions). I play for Cordova and I had the opportunity to play Bearden at state so my opinion is not derived from he said she said.

In Memphis alone I could name about 10 players or more that are a lot better at soccer then Matt. Yes, there is no doubt in my mind that he could hang with the best of them, but a lot of us can, and there is a huge difference in playing with the best and being the best.

One player for example was Dayton O'Brien. He played for ECS last year and was heavily recruited. He signed with Memphis University (University of Memphis). During his senior year of high school he was suspended from 3 games for participating in the C-USA pre-season tournament where he was awarded MVP of the entire tournament. Imagine that, senior in high school beating out the best of Div. 1 players in a C-USA tournament.

I could name all the other awards that he has received (includes Matt's achievments and more) but there is really no need to.

In conclusion, Matt is a very good player and he diserves everything that comes his way. But I would not go as far as to say that he is the best player in TN.

What about Drew Ward for Clarksville? He had AT LEAST 29 goals this season and actually started out playing on defense in the beginning and was very good at that position too. Maybe not the best but very quick and could play several positions. If the ammount of goals he scored, how far his team went in the playoffs, and their national ranking is a factor (25th) then he is right there or one step behind Matt Herbsritt. I'm still not sure about his final goal total but I want to think it was 31 or so. I think he was at 29 right before they played Bearden and he scored 2 that game. Just not sure though. I think the fact that Drew Ward played for a team that didn't play possession style soccer and instead played more of a counter attack style and he still scored that many goals and didn't even play foward the whole season says allot for him.
