Sequoyah Football

As a fairly recent observer who's not from these parts, it's obvious to me that three things are killing SQHS sports.

1. Parents

2. The Vonore-Madisonville civil war

3. Administrative indifference.

Come to the games and see how many of the parents are wearing their Vonore Blue Devils hats and shirts. They still want their own teams and have always felt that the Madisonville power structure has kept them down. See, Summey was one of them and got blown out... In the early days, the Madisonville powers that be would have never allowed one of those Vonore people to be in charge.

The school has been unwilling or unable to hire and keep paid professional coaches, so that has kept the program staffed with volunteer coaches and lots of parents helping to run the show. I don't think any of their motives are evil, selfish or bad. But having volunteer coaches with sons in the program is a slippery slope. The Moser family is a wonderful supporter of the program with its time, money and incredible effort, not to mention good athletes. But could a coach dare step on their toes vis a vis their son? I don't think Pete has never put any pressure on the coaches, but they sure don't want to tick off such an important supporter, and that creates its own pressure.

With the actual "paid" coaches, Sequoyah continues to recycle through locals that didn't get the job done the first, second or third time. Jamie D. may be a nice guy, but how many different Sequoyah teams was he going end up coaching before realizing he wasn't a very good coach.

Since the school was founded the football team had one "good year." I don't count making the playoffs in a five team region with a 3-7 record as a good year. The boys basketball team has had one really good year and three other winning seasons, two of which were very early. The girls team has had two winning seasons a long time ago. The minor sports haven't had much regular success either. Thank heavens for the band, or Sequoyah would have a mighty thin trophy case.

Coach Gregory might turn out to be a good AD. His predecessor was an absolute train wreck. Athletic Directors shouldn't be assistant coaches. Either be a head coach, or don't coach. If they need the extra stipend that bad, the school needs to pay more. If Coach Gregory wants to be the HC, I'm OK with that. He has a better track record in Miss. than anyone we're going to get at this late date. But he can't be an assistant.

Vonore vs. Madisonville. Get over it. That's 13 years ago. Within a couple of years of consolidation schools like Jefferson County and Rhea County were battling for state championships. It didn't take McMinn Central that long to to heal.

Board of Education. Come up with the money, teaching flexibility, and administrative support to hire and keep good coaches... a full staff, no volunteers. Seven head coaches in 13 years is beyond an embarrassment.

Parents, let the coaches coach. If they don't use your child properly, that is a valuable life lesson. Because in life, they are going to be used improperly by employers. Let them learn to deal with it now.

This can be fixed, but Knute Rockne himself would fail without all the other problems being repaired.

I do not expect there to be any candidates. Just out of curiosity how long has the coach been at Midway and has he been successful there.

30 + Years college coaching experience, Has been a head coach at a college in Alabama and Tennessee and at the high school level. He has been an assistant coach in the SEC at Mississippi, Auburn,Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Is a current SEC assistant, They have received a letter of recommendation from his current SEC head coach. He interviewed YESTERDAY! Now lets see if the powers to be want to hire a man on his credentials or make ANOTHER political hire????? Did you or Dr Dave take him out to lunch? Dinner? Better get there quick to make your pitch about how good of an idea it is to have parents of players on the coaching staff. If you leave it up to the next coach and dont convince him otherwise, odds are, he will think thats a stupid idea and get rid of our existing volunteers. GOOD LUCK!

As a side bar his references were Mickey Andrews defensive coordinator for Florida State, Steve Sloan ex SEC head coach and Athletic director at UT Chattanooga, Assistant coach at Texas forgot his name, Tommy Tuberville at Auburn and the general manger for the San Diego Chargers. Not Bad..... Oak Grove are you paying attention!!! /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" />

This sounds like a Coach that could have a positive impact on the area not

only at Sequoyah. If this is the Coach that our A.D. wants we need to do what

it takes to get him in here. /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" />

Why would he want to come here and put himself through this torture? Just curious a man with those credentials would be very silly to come here and put up with this. I would love to have somebody like that here, but realisticly we are the type of place that could destroy somebodies career. My vote when we get a new guy all existing volunteer coaches are out, that is something that should not be left up to the new guy. That is what we as fans and parents should make happen.

With that kind of experience and not to mention the advantage the boys would have with this guys contacts at the college level. There is no way they will hire him it makes to much sense. It will be politcal just like it was when they hired Summey. Wake up Mr. Lowery, it's time to do something right for a change.

Don't know what the real problem was but by reading coaches comments his assistant wanted the job (the current AD which is also on f/ball staff). Don't know any of the coaches but did see this team play once last year, played hard. Not a very good offensive scheme in my opinion, whoever the play caller was didn't do a good job at all recognizing where he had the advantages. No one is perfect and that was only one game I saw. Maybe he was better on other Fri nights.

Anyway good luck with the season hope it turns out well. Its very odd that you fire your coach two months before the season. Things like that take place in the winter. Hate it for the seniors - they need to make a good hire and not give it to anyone on last year's staff.

Well he did not have a whole lot of help up in the booth spotting mismatches, and he went to the well too many times in very important game ghanging stuations. He called his best game at Sweetwater, then struggled for the most part the rest of the year. He struggled making halftime adjustments to help us move the ball. Seemed to be one step behind the defense, plenty of room to improve.

If a man has these kind of credentials, why in the world is he interested in Sequoyah?

I can grasp the desire to get back to high school, teaching, molding young men. But there at least a half dozen better openings in the South right now that have tradition, paid staff, better facilities...

gift horse....mouth....etc....

But unless he has relatives buried in Jeffrey's heck, I can't imagine why anyone that qualified would want this job... Hopefully he doesn't regain consciousness until after the Sweetwater game.
