75% of the crowd didn't know why he was ejected for two reasons. 1. It was the tail end of a play so if you weren't looking you didn't see the incident. 2. If you weren't close enough to hear what Gant was saying ( certain words, use your imagination) then you probably wouldn't understand why he was tossed.

On another note, your more than welcome to disagree with any call you'd like. I don't think Martinez was out at first on that pick, so I disagreed and the game went on. Yell and gripe from the stands all you want, but unfortunately for you the only opinion that matters is that of the umpire.

Ok, fair enough. Not sure what was said, and maybe that was a huge part of the reasoning. I just hated to not see these two great young men battle it out. Not Smith's fault, he sure did his part.

Totally agree with you on the Martinez call, no way was he out. The tag was way up on his hip, so based on where the 1B was, it was physically impossible for him to be out.

BUT, again, let's not take away from Smith's performance, great job out there.

sorry -- you just nullified your previous post.

Under no circumstance should behavior like this be tolerated or justified. I'm sure Gant's parents, teammates and coaches -- and Gant himself -- would tell you the same thing. From the sound of it, we're not just talking about questioning balls and strikes. We're talking about verbal and physical behavior that is unacceptable. Period.

It was a mistake. Learn from it and move on!

Under no circumstance should an umpire put his hands on a player behavior like this should not be tolerated or justified. There was no unacceptable physical behavior from Gant or are you referring to when he threw his cap into the dugout. I'm sure you have no clue what Gant's parents think of this. They do know every word that was said and what really happened. They were watching Clayton the whole time before, during, and after the "incident". At no time was he in the umps face and at no time did he initiate contact with the ump.

"Baseballislife" get a grip!!!! that goes for you too hsbaseballfan03

In case you missed my first post (#18) lifesapitch check out below. I think I've got a pretty good grip, thank you!

"hsbaseballfan03, I have to agree with you. No matter the circumstance, a high school player should NEVER cross this line. I gotta believe that the coach at USJ talked directly to the player about this and that it will never happen again -- and that he has reinforced with his entire team that under no circumstances is anyone to question an ump -- and if they do, they're on the bench -- no matter who they are.

And as a senior, I'm sure Gant has already apologized to his teammates for this. No doubt it is a moment in this kid's brillant career that he'll always regret -- especially since it was against CBHS and guys he's played with and against.

Let him move on."

I believe I have a pretty good grip too. I don't want that one night to define Clayton but at the same time I have in no way embellished what I saw. I don't know what your talking about the umpiring putting his hands on Clayton in an inappropriate way? That is the first I have heard of that from anyone...if it was that inappropriate I would think that Coach Dyer would've done something, don't you? If he punched him or even shoved him I could see your point but neither did anything close to that. It did look like a little contact was made and it looked like Gant initiated the contact (not in a malicious way) while arguing over calls ( he had question a call TWO pitches before from the mound). He was OBVIOUSLY frustrated especially when he paced around the mound while mouthing about calls. I don't know how his parents reacted or how he or his team feels about it. I do know no one else seemed to have a hard time keeping their composure and mouth shut, which lead to no one else on either side being ejected.

didn't CBHS have a player tossed from a state championship game a few years ago for cursing at an umpire? I think he was forgiven when their coach apologized to the umpire haha

Guess it depends on who yells the loudest and the longest

He wasn't tossed because he finished the game. The umpire thought he was cussing at him but then realized he wasn't. Why changed the subject though? Are you admitting Gant was wrong and now looking for others flaws to make it easier to accept?

Gant is a competitor....he wasnt getting the calls he needed to keep CBHS off balance...he would get to a 2-0 count almost every at bat and then had to groove pitches down the middle. I am in no way taking anything away from CBHS. They are a great hitting team. But it is hard to be an effective pitcher when the only strike the umpire is giving you is the same pitch that hitters dream about at night. Gant just got a little overheated and lost control for a couple of seconds.

he was allowed to finish because Christian Brothers cheats...everyone knows this is the only way the Brothers have won more state titles than any other school, regardless of classification. duh.

getting back on topic--wish id have seen what happened. its sad that a high school kid feels the need to show his ace like that. he may be a competitor, but its sad. very sad.

tide roll.

i drove all the way from oakland friday afternoon (even knowing there was rain on the way and that oaklands coach would be expecting me to tarp the field) to see what i THOUGHT would be a great highschool baseball game. the only thing i saw was an umpire who got power hungry and wanted some spot light... WELL YOU GOT IT BUDDY! that was the worst calling in any sport that i have EVER seen! and for those of you that say it wasnt in CBHS's favor are crazy! the brothers pitcher was geting curveballs and fastballs that the catcher scooped out of the dirt called for strikes, and gant and the other pitcher (who i heard was a SOPHOMORE) were not getting corners, knees or letters.... they had to throw fastball ###### shots down the middle of the plate! yes CBHS you are ranked in the nation, but Po Dunk could hit a ball if it was thrown there! and then on top of that i heard after the game of comments the umpire had made to the catcher such as "If you keep freezing and framing the ball you will not get another call all night." that is rediculous, and he should be kicked out of the TSSAA and baseball for life! but congrats on the win... idk who wouldnt have won if they had that in their favor!

as for gants display.... as a former pitcher i would have done the same exact thing! i do not think Gant touched or said ANYTHING inappropriate to the umpire... i usually agree that you dont argue balls and strikes, but if you were not at the game it was unlike anything you could imagine! so hold your head up Gant, you did NOTHING wrong!

wont be able to make it to the game Tuesday because they have us doing 2 aday tarp drills, but i expect it will be a good game, and hopefully umpired well!

You know tarpman, I even heard rumor (from reliable sources) that CBHS coach was going to "report the ump". Assuming this is true, what would he be reporting? What a wonderful job the ump did? The true test will be Tuesday at USJ - will USJ respond, will the umps know their butts from a hole in the ground (probably), will CBHS be as effective at the plate without the benefit of having it set on a tee for them ? We'll see. Keep up the good work tarpman. BTW, ya'll played in any dust-settling gulleywashers lately?

I laughed pretty hard when I read this one. Like I said...I was in the dugout. Never seen either ump. Thought they were below average all the way around but both teams had to deal with it. CBHS was by far the better team that night. When they go up there Tuesday if we get beat you won't see me making excuses (or one of our players getting tossed). If we win you won't see me bragging either. I know USJ is talented so it does mean something to beat them. I've gotten my say in, I know what I saw and I know the umps weren't the best quality. Nough said from me about the game.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.
    • Dyersburg scrimmaged South Gibson last week
    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
