In order for a transfer student with an athletic record to be eligible at another school there must be a bona

fide change of residence by the athlete's parents.

Âú All transfer students must be approved by the Executive Director of TSSAA before participating in any

game.

Âú A student who engages in three or more days of practice - including spring practice - with a high school in

which he or she is enrolled shall be ineligible in that sport for 12 months if the student enrolls in another

school without a corresponding change in the residence of his or her parents.

Âú A student whose name is listed on the school eligibility report cannot participate in an independent game or

meet until the season has closed in that particular sport. (This does not include golf, tennis or bowling.

From TSSAA-

A student who attends a member private, parochial, or public school other than the school to which he or she is zoned

and participates in athletics cannot transfer to another school within the territory served by these schools without losing

his or her eligibility for a period of 12 monthsĻeven though there is a change of residence.

Here is the problem with the waiver angle. The student must first make the trasnfer to the new school, then apply for a waiver. He must have a letter from the principal of the old school and a letter from the new school explaining the reasons for the transfer and the "hardship" being requested. If the TSSAA Director doesn't approve the transfer, the kid has lost his senior year! I don't think one can be made in advance of the transfer.

ELA is right on as far as that goes. That exact thing happened at a school I used to work for. the kid left a private school and claimed hardship. The private school AD said the kid left b/c he wasn't playing enough. When asked to proove financial stress, the parents tried, but it was proven false easily. The kid lost his senior year at the public school.

That actually happened.

Transfers to boarding schools are now immediately eligible, as long as the transfer was not for athletic reasons.

There are 4 boarding schools in TSSAA:

Baylor, Chattanooga

McCallie, Chattanooga

SAS, Sewanee

Kings Academy,Seymour

Here is exact wording:

Added the following to Article II, Section 13 (Transfer Rule): A student with an athletic record may transfer without loss of eligibility at the beginning of the school year from a boarding school (where he/she was a boarding student) to the school serving the district or territory where his/her parents live or may transfer at the beginning of the school year from the school serving the district or territory where his/her parents live to a boarding school as a boarding student, provided the principal of the student's former school indicates in writing that the move is not for athletic or disciplinary reasons. (The school must be outside the day school territory of the boarding school.)g
