(5-4 4-2) Gleason @ (8-1 6-0) Union City

Recommended Posts

Alex Verdell,Zach Wallace,Shadow Roney,Cody Ezell and Co. roll into Union City winners of four of their last five games.....Included in that streak is a 30-18 win at Lake County in September which is looking really good right now considering what LC has done recently....Head coach Noah Lampkins(23-48 7 seasons) has his Bulldogs playing up to their pre-season hype in the second half of the season..One publication had them predicted third in the region coming off an impressive 7-4 season a year ago....Verdell is the big guy in the offense as he is coming off a 1000 yard rushing season and 14TD's from his fullback position and over 100 tackles from his LB position..More impressive though is his 30+ ACT score.....The Bulldogs won this game a year ago in impressive fashion against the Tornadoes and I'm sure some of the UC defensive players have had more than one nightmare about Verdell and his bruising style of running the football....I still say the loss last season to Gleason was the most embarrassing loss in the history of Tornado football...It was also probably the final nail in the coffin of Jimmy Fishel's stint at Union City....

Union City on the other hand comes into the contest with the Region 7-1A title belt around their waste..Their first region championship since the state runner-up year of 2005...Colton Speed directs a powerful veer offense that is racking up 350+ yards rushing each week....The Tornadoes are on a 8 game winning streak following an opening season 27-14 loss to Martin Westview...This is the longest such streak since the 9 game streak during the 05 season...The Union City defense also comes into the game with three straight games of holding their opponent to negative yards rushing....Redemption,pride whatever you want to call it is on the line for the Tornadoes this Friday Night...This will also mark the final regular season home game for 10 seniors...Those include Peter Wilkes,Thomas Turner,Colton Speed,Julius Foster,Julian Moss,Brandon Crume,Wyatt Carr,Caleb Poore,Luke Sanderson and Brandon Easley..

My prediction is....

Union City-35

Gleason-13

What say you???

Colton Speed.........I hear he's a good kid and I do appreciate the way he plays the game. He's all business and doesnt showboat. He just does his job, scores and hands the ball to the referee. He is the MVP of the region and a good football player.

If you can stop Speed you can beat Union City. Noone has stopped hm yet and I doubt Gleason can either but I'd make Union City throw the ball. Designate a man to hit Speed every play whether he has the ball or not but stay with him for 48 minutes. Put 8 men in the box and dare Speed to throw the ball. Union City can be beat and I hope Gleason wins. I'm not sure that Union City would make the playoffs this year with out Speed.

I have heard "the loss to Gleason last year was the worst loss in the history of Union City football" from Purple & Gold so many times that I'm tired of hearing it. Its a slap in the face to the Bulldogs and should be bulletin board material for the Bulldogs. It will be a close game and I hope Gleason wins but the game is at Union City. I'll say Union City wins 34-28.

I agree with Greenfieldfan. If Gleason will hit Speed every single play...keep him from running around the end, then Gleason will have a good shot at winning. I'd not only have 8 men in the box...I'd sneak my safety up as well...maybe 3 or 4 yards behind the LB's. I'd tell UC that you have to pass to beat me. But, someone better hit the fullback, and someone better hit Speed every single play...bring them down every single play...the entire game.

Folks, Obion Central tried that game plan and it kinda worked in the first half but then Union City came out in the second half and ran the ball right down the Rebels throats!!

Even got a player tossed due to hitting Speed to many time after the play so be careful.

Union City does have a few more plays than you think...more backs, and yes can throw the ball if pressed to.

So come on, bring your best game because "Your Going To Need It"....I Promise.

Union City 42

Gleason 20

If Gleason is needing bulletin board material to play this game they will lose in a rout.....

All Bowling has to do is pull out that game film of last year's game between these two teams....UC will be highly motivated...As far as a slap??...Maybe...But it is what it is..... /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" /> I will make you a deal though..You quit mentioning the size of Greenfield High School and I won't say anything else about the most embarrassing loss in UC 's history...Deal??.... /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

Your description of Colton is a good one....

Dresden and Obion Central did hold Speed down..They both lost..But you are right you have to figure out a way to stop UC's run game...Not only Speed but now you have to deal with Nicks,Maddox,Worley and Price.....I have only seen one team shut down Bowling's veer offense....That was when he was in Region 7-3A....I didn't get to see his Dyersburg team last year so I don't know if anyone actually shut it down last season....

One thing I didn't mention in my initial post....Wes Kennedy, who was badly burned in an industrial accident down in Memphis a few weeks ago,was at the game last night in West Carroll....Bowling said Kennedy had been breaking down Gleason game film while at home..He isn't done with some medical procedures but his voice sounded really strong last night on the radio interview....Good to have you back Coach!!...

Will Coach Kennedy be on the sidelines this year? I do hope everything goes well for him and he gets back soon. I know he misses being on the sidelines but he has been an asset to the team and it probably drew the team closer together after his injury. Please tell him when you see him that we wish him well and a speedy recovery.

G'Field..I don't know if he will actually be on the sidelines coaching....I do know he was on the sidelines last night...How long,I don't know....I didn't go down to Atwood last night....It was mentioned on air that he wasn't suppose to be doing anything but watching but the game had just barely started and the sideline reporter said he was already cheerleading... /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> I'm sure he will appreciate your well wishes....He has come a very long way in a short period of time....

Speed will wear that defense out with the hot passes...UC doesn't throw because they don't have to,not that they can't....Now,if you make them one-dimensional and take away the run all together you may have something...

Why do you need to pass when you rush for 350+ yards / game? Some teams have slowed Speed during the year, but we also have other backs that have rushed over 100yds in a game as well. UC is a hard team to defend, not impossible, but hard to defend. The defense is shaping up also. I think Nicks at fullback is a perfect match - good power and speed w/ some moves as well.

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
