Great Teams

I know there are many great teams suffering over the past couple of days and beyond. I am sorry I don't know most of their stories, but I do know Baylor and Notre Dame have fought hard for four years to get to where their were when they woke up this morning and very few of us every thought they would be spectators tomorrow. The crazy thing for me is that many of the girls on those two teams play club together and perhaps it is, in some strange way, better they both end the year in the same spot. Wish is was an all night celebration, but since it's not, maybe they can comfort each other. This has been a very unique year as the finals will depict. Just want to acknowledge two great programs that should be playing one more game.

There is no doubt that Siegel has had the toughest road to the Championship game. Comeback wins against Houston and Franklin this team has shown an incredible ability to step up its game when up against the wall. Lead by seniors Maggie Trollenger, Sydney Dewberry, Kim Conrad, Brandy Phillips and Hayley Sloan this team has shown the ability to do what it takes to win. Also this senior group has been to the State Tournament the last four years.

 

Congratulations Siegel Lady Stars and bring home the state title on Saturday!!!

While I am sure that it is a difficult for some of the teams that fell a little short, I have to give a huge congratualtions to FRA and Coach McDonald. Very few contributors here at Coach T gave FRA a chance to make another state final, and while they still have a huge job in front of them I think the program and Coach McDonald deserve mention and a best of luck wish. Coach McDonald has brought a lot of young ladies to state and had remarkable results. By my calculations, 7 straight appearances at State, 6 of 7 in the State finals, and 4 wins with one state final to be played out of those 6 appearances! An awesome job for a small school of significantly less than 300 high school students! Most of you know that FRA will move to DII single A next year due to the continued issues of TSSAA, multiplier, etc. While this will lead to new challenges and rivalries I believe that A/AA womens soccer will suffer for the loss of the great rivalries in that division over the last decade (CCS, CAK, ND, FRA, CPA, DCA....what great tournament games these teams and others have provided for us!) I cannot tell you how many comments there were regarding the throw-in ability of your team, (can't remember her number, maybe #2 ?)...It was very impressive to see a throw in make it almost into the 6 yard box, for the goals that were scored....a very strong offensive weapon, for sure....I heard the comment that Notre Dame was almost better off giving up a corner kick, than allow her to throw in...

Tanner Thompson. We know him all too well--West beat us with a goal off his throw-in in (I believe) his second game ever. Will he be a junior this year?

Thank you to all the girls, those that came to Chattanooga, and those that couldn't/didn't make the trip, for putting your heart and soul into the game of soccer. You all are a joy to watch. Good luck to those who will try again next year, and those that are now hanging up their cleates, some forever... For those few who go onto the next level, make Tennessee proud....
