D2 Thanksgiving Day

Why not play the D2 state championship on Thanksgiving Day like some of the true East Coast prep schools play their final regular season game? The Clinic Bowl was played on Thanksgiving Day when it started. Everyone would be out of school, most people would not be working and it would allow family to travel into town and watch the games.

I agree with you...play it on campus of someone, thanksgiving day.

I wrote it a few years back, but I would be happy with an "Ivy League" type format for D2. Just eliminate the play-offs, and finish the season with a local rivalry game on Thanksgiving Day.

For example, last year MBA won D2 by finishing the season with Ensworth, BA, and FRHS. In the play-offs, we claimed the title by beating FRHS, then BA. What was the point? Why did we have to beat each of them again?

We could create a tradition like this--finish the season with...

MUS-CBHS

MBA-FRHS

BA-EHS

Baylor-McCallie

all on Thanksgiving Day, 12:00 type start. I attended one of these East Coast games on Thanksgiving Day a few years ago. It was better than any homecoming game you have ever seen. The stands are packed...It truly is an "event" that people will not miss. The campuses would be abuzz with returning alums, friends, family.

Since it appears the only folks who care about DII for the most part are the parents and alumni, if you brought all schools together for the event, you would have folks that make up the majority of the following. I like the Thanksgiving Day suggestion.

The suggestions made on this post are obviously right. DivII is not large enough to continue playing, to play, to play again the same teams. The Football Purists in DII likely will disagree but the crowd in Memphis at the MUS/Brentwood game was reported more than once as a very slim crowd in a Stadium that it made it look extremely small. The cost to the school, the fans and the taxpayers, with the small interest that far away, doesn't make sense. I wish the TSSAA would post attendance figures on the last three playoff games of each Division. Lets get the numbers out and discuss them. Maybe not for the reason you might think, I think its time to get discussion going again as to why the State of Tennessee is going thru all of this. The players are owed more than the pittance of parent support and a few fans, if indeed that is what is happening. If DII wants Prep School, it fits in what Baylor, McCaullie, Notre Dame, etc are doing, go after it and run your schedule and playoffs accordingly, not what is being done now.

But if thats not what the schools can afford, let the rest of the schools play together and beforehand get together and find the way to make this work. It is to everybody's advantage to find a way to do it and let each school find their nitch.

Academics is important, extremely so. Quality of product is extremely important. But Adult agreement of financial aid, with restrictions placed on numbers of Athletes has to be reasonable. It is true the 1.8 multiplier is too high but has been said. These are two different entities on the educational side but finding the right formula for restricting recruiting is right for everyone. Everyone in DIVII and DIVI would bith benefit. A way to provide Strength in Rules

for violations, no matter the Division, is sorely needed. A lot of visability is needed to make sure rules are carried out.

    • Honestly the A.D. may be powerless at Maryville to some degree versus other schools. I know he has his hands full with GoFan and all the stupid surprises just from the emails he sends out during the season.
    • Harriman was better than what I anticipated. They had good skill guys and a QB that’s gonna make a lot of teams look silly. They had some silly pre snap penalties but it’s just spring and I guess that’s expected.    Oneida looks the part. They are big upfront and got a stable of backs that’s gonna carry them this year. They have a few playmakers at receiver also. They have a new receiver that has only played basketball till this year and he is very athletic. The question is can we find a QB to consistently get them the ball. They played 2-3 kids there and none looked great but they didn’t look awful either. The  defense is gonna be tough again but it’s very early and a lot can change between now and the fall.     It was good just to get out and watch some ball. I don’t know if Oneida has the team to win the region this year but just what I saw tonight I think they may be in the conversation come November.
