I asked this question on another thread but it never got answered. Did Asberry, Crouch, and Thompkins play college ball? Do you know what they are doing now? I agree about thier defensive ability. They were quick and athletic and all over the floor. I am not sure I agree about them getting technical's. I cannot remember any players on that team getting technicals but I could be wrong.

No, they probably could have played at the junior college level....but some people don't have the desire to play college ball, Asberry is a pharmacist now, Crouch has an accounting degree and Tompkins is in the military and has a history teacher degree. Ya know, just because you don't get a major college scholarship to be a good high school player. Those guys were all good high school players, Andy had over 1,000 pts and I'm pretty sure John is 6th or 7th all time at 1900 something points. Now points aren't everything but those guys lead there teams to two or three state tournaments, depending on which Class you are talking about.

I agree that all those guys were tough.

Well since no one is talking about it I will...what does everyone think about the game tonight at LA? PC vs. JC? Anyone can win this one as this district is wild this year, so what does everyone think?

Can PC win this one? Yeah, I guess its possible....but this team peaked two or three weeks ago when they played JC, Clarkrange, and Clay Co. close, since those three close games, they lost to RBS badly, lost to Van Buren and Monterey close and then lost big to Clinton Co. Ky. This team isn't playing good basketball, not playing confident basketball....I don't know what the problem is, and I'm not even gonna try to figure it out...We are just a young basketball team with three of our five best players being sophomores and they aren't ready for this yet. Next year I'm gonna feel better. I really like this sophomore class, Elder especially and Jo Dowdy should look to have a big senior year. If Caleb Cummings can shake the nervousness that I've seen him have so much, this team will be really improved, because we've been shaky with our ball handling this year, as a team, not just Caleb. I also really like our freshman class, I think out of the whole game at Albany the other night, the freshman were the bright spot, now given it was against the second team, but they played impressively. Chase Ferrell is much better than I originally gave him credit, Jolly and Rupp are looking like what I thought they could be all along, and Chase Young was doing what he does, running around all over the court and playing defense, just love the kids energy. Those 3 or 4 freshman thrown in with Dowdy, S. Cummings, Elder, Aaron, C. Cummings, and Rich I think next year will be a better year for us. We still won't be very good outside of single a basketball, because our schedule is tough and filled with good out-of-state teams like Clinton Co. Ky and good in-state teams like LA and York and who knows who else we'll schedule. I'd like to go back to playing the Chattanooga teams, then their will be a good test for us. I think we should try and play some more 8A schools like Gordonsville. Maybe someone in Van Buren's region like Nashville Christian or Eagleville.

But back to tonight, I think we can win, but I'm not getting my hopes up... This team has disappointed me too many times this season for me to do that...But if they pull a big upset tonight, then I will be very happy, and congratulate them. PC hasn't missed region in 20+ years, so there is a lot on the line tonight. Good luck guys.

I am with you on some of the games this year being dissappointing, but still think we can give this one a run tonight. The boys need to look at it like this, they are at the bottom, nothing to lose, so they should just play confident and go balls to the wall tonight! Nothing else to do, I mean they have improved alot since they played JC the first time this season, and with a good game tonight, they could really turn some heads. They have to be confident though, and believe the run to the district champ. game, and region, is not over until they decide it is over. That could be tonight if they don't turn up the heat and give 140%, but they can do it. I got faith in an upset tonight. Good luck Cats!

Well, I will have to first say congratulations to Jackson County. It was not pretty but they pulled out the victory. Good luck to them in the rest of district play as well as region, and elsewhere, I hope they make it far.

Now, as for Pickett Co. It was definitely a valiant effort, they made a run at it, no one was comfortable with the ball for Jackson Co. in the second half, but PC just came up short. I think they just turn it on and off too often, as players, they should be there to play night in, night out, and it seems like they at times get so far down, then decide to turn it on and play once they get in a big deficit. Anyways, they will be much improved next year, my prediction is JC/PC are first and second next year, and this game could go either way because JC loses alot in their big man. Also, CC will make a run at either of these teams if anyone decides not to show up on any night. Prediction next year, 1 Jackson Co. 2 Pickett Co. 3 Clay Co...but again could go either way! Good luck to district 7a in the rest of tourrnament play.

jc still returns a lot. They'll be a lot like this year. But pc doesn't lose much either (2defensive guys and a guy with a bad knee and really didn't get to play but a half season because of that knee. If jo and Sam can play like they did in the second half for an entire season, this teamwill be 5 to 6 wins better. Just on that alone. If the sophomores can score maybe ten per game then i think you add 3 or 4 wins. This team needs to do over the offseason 1) they need to play together, like just pick up basketball. 2)get stronger physically, these boys aren't very tall and they may not grow anymore over summer..so they need to get stronger to make up for it. And 3) they need to a)become better freethrow shooters, these are awful from the line and b)learn how to handle full court pressure, gotta get better at getting the ball up the court. I think this years freshmanwill give this team some valuable mins off thebench. Next year is gonna bea much better year folks.

I have no idea what school "thedream" is from but NO school has had the record that Pickett Co. has had in the last 20+ years. I'm very proud of them for coming back from 21 down...I guess that either shows that they have potential or Jackson Co. is terrible too! For the Bobcats it'll be one year down and right back in 1st or 2nd next year and for many years to come. Great comeback Bobcats and I'm very proud of you for how you didn't give up. This will be a great incentive for next year...remember JC went to the state last year. Work hard until Nov. 09 and PC will be on top again. Name another school which has been in 20+ straigh district championships!

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
