Thanks that was a good read. Poor coach Pogue. He loses 2 games and the fans are calling for his head. I thought that it was just a great match up. Congrats MUS.

It was a great matchup. MUS is not going to wow you in street clothes. They walk out of the locker calmly, not even necessarily confidently, and many don't look terribly imposing in pads either. But, they execute to death, they make you pay for your mistakes, and their play-calling and schemes allows them to compensate for their often lack of size or athletes (MUS certainly produces athletes and puts a guy in the college ball ranks here and there, but guys of Brunetti's talent are far more the exception than the rule).

Tonight's game is just another feather in DII's cap in a year which may be its strongest top-to-bottom in the thirteenth year of the split. MUS has beaten a South Panola machine, which more than makes up for the Owls' loss to Tebow's alma mater, Nease, a few years back. MBA has the Byrnes (SC) shellacking monkey on its back, but wins against the program (Moeller, OH) first to ever be voted by USA Today as national champions, and three-wins-in-four games against Kentucky's best program (Trinity) mitigate that Byrnes loss. And then you have BA, who has played an OOS team for 25 years in a row, and has played some doozies: Prattville, AL (loss), St. Xavier, OH (loss), Meridian, MS (win), Manual, KY (win). Even Baylor, McCallie, and CBHS have represented quite well in out-of-state matchups with MS, NC, VA schools.

While all may agree that national polls are hard to take too seriously, they are a fact of life of high school football. And while I love it when any Tennessee team makes a poll, whether it's DII or DI, or public or private, it's hard not to say that the scheduling and accomplisments on the field of the DII schools as a whole is the most convincing evidence of the quality of HS football in some potions of Tennessee.

Congradulations to MUS...hard fought victory...u guys took advantage of South Panola's mistakes and were clearly the better coached team. Let me give you guys a little background on the South Panola coaching situation. From 2002- 2006 the South Panola coaching staff was made up of who many regard as the best coach in the history of mississippi high school football Willis Wright(got the South Panola Dynasty going in the early 90's and was the head coach of their first state championship team in '93) at defensive coordinator and who many regard as the second best coach in mississippi high school football history Ricky Woods was the head coach and handled the offense. During that stretch South Panola was 74-1 with 4 straight state championships and the year they didn't win the championship was the first year of the staff in '02 when they went 14-1 and lost in the state championship game. After the '06 season Coach Woods left(the real reason isn't known) and took a coaching job in GA. Lance Pogue came in as head coach but Willis Wright stuck around as defense coordinator for the '07 season and South Panola won another state championship mainly because of the defense and because Tigg Barksdale rushed for almost 3,000 yards that year. Last year Willis Wright left and rejoined with Ricky Woods at Northwest Community College and Pogue was on his own. From day one you could tell that things weren't going to be the same and that is why you hear a lot of people on the MS message board calling for Pogues head because we know what a good coaching staff looks like and right now we do not have one, but again congradulations to MUS.
