That is correct. Only the top 2 in each district qualify for the playoffs. Classification does not matter. If CPA happens to beat Pearl Cohn and East Lit. but loses their other games and ends up 4-6 they probably would not make the playoffs. That makes these first 2 wins really important. I do think it is a shame that a win against a out of state team is just as important as a district win. The first thing they look at for wildcard slots is overall record. The quality of competition means nothing.

Thanks for the correction. This seems to penalize the 3A teams even more. Especially if you are in a tough district like 10AA that has mostly 4A teams in it.

Something I also don't understand is that CPA (350 high school enrollment) plays teams in their district with 1200 student. CPA has to multiply its enrollment by 2 to compete in Division 1. However, schools like Pearl-Cohn (1200 students) also get to recuit students from Martin Luther King and Hume Fogg who don't have football programs to play on their teams, but no enrollment adjustment is made. Schools like Alcoa can recuit from the entire county and no enrollment adjustment is made.

What gives?

What gives is that the multiplier and playoff system (and its many revisions)has accomplished exactly what the TSSAA wanted it to in response to the public outcry for "fairness". It made it almost impossible for private schools in D1 to win a state championship, and it ran off a lot of private schools to DII, which is where the TSSAA and the publics want them.

CPA's governing body made a conscious decision to stay in D1 (at the possible expense of wins) to allow their students and school to compete with schools that are more diverse in socio-economic makeup. They felt it better matched their mission statement as a Christian school and better prepared their student athletes for life in the community beyond high school.

I might add that CPA staying in D1 does have its benefits in sports other than football, basketball, track and baseball. They have done very well in soccer, golf, tennis, and volleyball as, typically, the competition is tougher in those sports among private schools versus public. They are regularly in the running for state in these "minor" sports and have made the finals or won state championships recently in them. They always do well in basketball but not as well as they would do in DII if they were there.

Just saw where CPA is starting 2 freshmen and 10 sophomores. That is a young team. Probably means good things for the future, but could impact 2010. I believe that last years 8th grade team was undefeated and the one before that only lost 1 game. Maybe these young guys know how to win.

A 3-0 start this season is much needed with CPA'a very tough out of district schedule.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
