Again, I do not place the blame for any these items on any of the players. Period.

 

There are 5 items on my list of Get Back to Basics Football 101 that have to do with defense. All VERY easy to comprehend and VERY basic. I believe you understand everyone of these well, but if all you're going to do is take a snarky fishing trip, I'm done.

#8 discussed 1st since we agree tackling is a problem. I believe you are wrong about wrapping up and yards after contact. I saw 1 hit not wrapped up that was a missed tackle. There were several where players were trying to make the tackle using only their arms. Poor pursuit angles, not moving their feet, dropping their heads, and not using their pads to make contact is why tackles are being missed. It is hard to wrap up a moving target without delivering a blow.

 

There's are alternative view to one of your points. We really agree with the problem the coaches need to correct. They can coach it but the kids gotta want to hit someone to make the tackles. Using your back to basics philosophy, maybe they need a week on physical tackling practice to get ready for Gate City.

 

Don't know what a snarky, fishing trip is captain, but I'll spend the time to discuss your coaching tips and leave time for you to respond if you choose. I like to learn what people are thinking when they are providing remedies. There is not much on your list I agree with or I wouldn't take the time to respond to it.

I hope it's a lot like that season, Jack. The Rebels rebounded from their annual early season spanking from the Indians to have a pretty good record. 10-2 I believe.

They win this one and more if:

 

1. Play the QB in the QB position.

2. Play the receivers in the receiver positions.

3. Have the best available player (with a backup ready) in each position.

4. Limit the number of players playing both ways.

5. Limit the offense to 15-20 real football plays.

6. Don't try to make all-staters out of 1 or 2 players at the expense of the team.

7. Limit all outside influences on coaching decisions.

8. Let it be widely known that it is perfectly legal to use your arms while tackling.

 

I place absolutely no blame or responsibility on the players for any of the above and can only hope DB knocked some sense in those that are responsible.

Counterpoint: I did not see the QB play another position on offense. He did play defense as well, but I am guessing you disagree with the wildcat formation that had another player receiving snaps. The wildcat is so common now that most every NFL and college team has some package for this attack. You probably didn't notice but Dobyns-Bennett's 2nd TD came out of the wildcat with Foreman scoring on us. They should probably stick to only playing the QB at QB though right?

 

I won't pretend to know why our coaches thought we needed it for this game or future games. For some reason they did. D-B's front 7 looked awfully talented to me and apparently our coaches felt we may have trouble blocking them. They had given up only 7 points in two games: 7 to a top 10 6A Farrugut team and 0 with minus 2 total yards to 5A Clinton. I believe taking the ball 80 yards on the games 3rd series for a second TD without throwing a pass would be considered at least a relative success. I would agree it needs some threat of the forward pass and should not be used more than it proves effective.

I know this has nothing to do with South vs GC game. Why did Appalachia and Powell Valley consolidate to make another school? I had some buddies I worked with at the Airport that played for Appalachia. They hated Powell Valley with a passion. I worked with several guys from Southwest Virginia and they loved to talk about LPD Football. They all had a lot of respect for Gate City.

Wise Co. school board decided 6 schools needed to be 3 to become more efficient . The original plan was to build 2 new schools on the same property back to back. That plan was met with a public backlash. This [3 schools] was a transition compromise. Hope that helps RR. Good luck to the Rebels as if you need it. LOL. Say hi to my buddy STARSNBARS

BTW REBELRON, you may know that the Jones brothers, RBs in the NFL, both prepped at Powell Valley. I've attended a game there in the past and they have an exciting, passionate environment in SWVA.

I'll wade in on this just a bit....jilts bullet points numbers 3,4 and 6 are not really possible. In all fairness, when you don't have 22 athletes that are capable of competing at the level of competition that you are playing, then you have to play the ones that you have both ways as long as possible. If you only have two or three that are physically capable of being playmakers, you best get the ball to them as often as possible.

 

Unfortunately for south, that is the case that they have. You can put kids out there and hand other kids the ball, but all the coaching in the world ain't gonna make them faster or strong and athletic enough to make plays. Mommys and Daddy's like to fuss at the coach for not playing junior....I can assure you that if junior could make a play, he would be out there. Those coaches are doing the best they can with what they got. Why do you think Stacy left??? He went to a place with a more athletic gene pool. That's the only way to compete! If it was just coaching harder and smarter, he would have stayed right where he was to do it. Everybody on this board knows his heart is all reb! But, you can only coach what is there.

 

You got great coaches. They love the program and they know what they are doing.
