Big Games in Memphis - Week 6

Ok folks. It's Week 6 and most of us have a working knowledge of our area teams. It's going to be hard to make up ground on the leaders from this point on. But, there is still hope. This is high school football, anything is possible. District play has now become important and as a result, we have some intriguing games on the horizon. This week I've selected seven (7) games.

Game 1: Fri., Sept. 28, (4-2) Arlington (D14-6A) @ (4-1) Craigmont (D14-5A)

Game 2: Fri., Sept. 28, (3-2) ECS (D2-A West) @ (6-0) Briarcrest (D2-AA West) [corrected]

Game 3: Fri., Sept. 28, (3-2) Germantown (D15-6A) @ (2-3) Collierville (D15-6A)

Game 4: Fri., Sept. 28, (3-3) Dyer Co. (D13-5A) @ (6-0) Hardin Co. (D13-5A)

Game 5: Fri., Sept. 28, (4-1) Dyersburg (D13-4A) @ (4-2) Crockett Co. (D13-4A)

Game 6: Fri., Sept. 28, (4-1) Manassas (D15-4A) @ (4-1) Trezevant (D15-4A)

Game 7: Fri., Sept. 28, (4-2) MUS (D2-AA West) @ (5-0) CBHS (D2-AA West)

1) Arlington by 10

2) Briarcrest by 7

3) Gtwn by 6

If Shane Tucker is healthy enough to be a factor, MUS beats CBHS. Otherwise, it's a tossup, and perhaps the home field gives CBHS the advantage. Moreover, the Bros certainly remember their 42-3 shellacking at MUS last season. Historically, MUS does not play one of its better games at Tom Nix, for whatever reason.

Why is that owlbooster? I mean ... to me home field advantage is of small consequence in Memphis between certain schools. I don't think MUS would be intimidated playing in Tom Nix any more then I would think Whitehaven would get intimidated playing White Station at the fairgrounds. So what gives? If you had to put a finger on it, if you could, what would say it is?

Beats me. I have NO idea. That's why I said "for whatever reason." There have been some years when MUS clearly was the better team but struggled to win or even lost at Tom Nix. Case in point: MUS' 2008 13-0 Nationally Ranked State Champions "held on" to win there 21-14 after leading 21-0 at half. Personally, I don't think there is much if any "home field advantage" in HS football. It's a great rivalry. Both teams have great tradition. Maybe CBHS is just really good at elevating their play at home. They certainly "laid an egg" on the road last year. That would never happen at Tom Nix.

There is a reason why I said "it is of small consequence in Memphis between certain schools". I can think of a lot of different scenerios in HS football here in Memphis alone where home field is a very real and almost quantifialble distinct advantage, especially during the play-offs.

Wow! I am surprised not to see an MUS vs CBHS thread in the DII section on this site. I would have to say that the the winner should be strongly considered and being the top team in the Memphis area (excluding MS). I will try to attend the second half.

Well ... you don't have a lot of CBHS or MUS posters on this site to warrant one. Owlbooster doesn't want to have a conversation with himself for goodness sake. It might garner a few comments from us local HS football fans, but it wouldn't gather a whole lot of steam. It's hard to get a mutlple thread topic on individual teams out of the Memphis-area teams. Private or public.

    • Gleason all over west Carroll in scrimmage. Gleason is big and fast
    • Defending 2A state Champs Westview Lady Chargers are pretty tough. They lost a bunch of production off last year's squad but returned some talent as well. They still McCall Simms, a Tennesseee Lady Vol softball commit as well as solid talent around the diamond. I dont think they are as good as last season but they will definitely be a tough out. Huntingdon Lady Mustangs seem to be pretty stout as well. Don't know much about Riverside other than Westview defeated them earlier in regions. West Tennessee softball is pretty solid all around id say.
    • Eagleville couldn’t catch up to Jones, he did have his location issues but in that game Eagleville popped up everything and the one hit they did have could have been ruled an error. Jeffcoat was a lot sharper in the beginning of the season last year than the end. ER ran out of pitching and still was in striking distance but none the less the better team one. Last seasons tournament was A LOT more balanced and talented. South Pitts starter is a Lefty who was low 80’s but couldn’t maintain his velo throughout the  outing, their #2 was more impressive last year, we knocked him around this year and his mph was down some. Their #3 isn’t bad neither, throws a lot of strikes and sits high 70’s.
    • He actually had a really solid spring.  I could see him getting some backup snaps on offense and be a regular on special teams.  Really athletic kid who can run.
