Getting into the district schedule now.  Grace has Midway at home tonight and Tellico at home tomorrow night.  We have only played one district game against Greenback.  Grace hopes to be getting healthy and at full speed after Christmas. The addition of Meigs to our district made it much stronger but should be some great games.

Word around is one of the Griffith Twins at OS has had an injury.  The box score of their last game only had one of them listed as scoring but I guess the other could have just not scored.  I don't wish injury on anyone, especially a player as talented as this one.  If the rumor is true.....then I hope this kid makes it back.

The girls played Clarkrange Friday without great results....looks like Lamar's Pipeline of players is running smoothly to his gym.  They are certainly a talented team and he has coached them well.  I don't think I'll get much arguement that he is a excellent coach.  We'll be back in the district Tuesday with Sunbright....I'd expect a quick recovery from Coach West's kids.  Looking to go to 3 and 0 if we can get back to work.

How did GCA-TP game go....I don't remember seeing a score?

Nevermind....I see TP got the Lady Rams.  Meigs appears to be the powerhouse this year in that district.  I'm inclined to think GCA and TP can't give them a go if they play well.  Oneida can take a two game lead on the field if they win tonite.  My guess is they will unless Sunbright suddenly becomes exponently better than they have been up to now.  Look for stat stuffers in this game, hopefully the GOOD kind!!!!  Any other district games tonight?

That first quarter was jaw dropping last night.  I thought Sunbright might be kinda quick on the floor but against the Lady Indians that wasn't the case.  This one was essentially over after that first quarter....from there it because not who wins, but how much....?  Of course they all important so another good win in the books.

  • 2 weeks later...

Lady Indians took all three games in Harriman Tournament.  Dropped Rockwood, Harriman, and Kingston.  Last game (Kingston) was tale of two halves....girls came out disinterested and were down 9 at the half.  Completely different team in the second half.....lit up the third with 28 points and won coasting in the end.  Get back to district play against Sunbright and they are starting to fine their mojo it seems.

Where is everyone situated right now...?  The Lady Indians are prepping for a mini-district storm of Oliver Springs and Wartburg (Tues./Friday)  If they can take those two (entirely possible) then it is very unlikely someone will catch them in the district regular season.  The kids are still searching for just the right mix and have shown flashes of elavated play at times (second half against Kingston) and glaring misfires......but they keep plugging away at it.

Is Meigs in control in the other region....?  Heard GCA was playing better lately.

The girls got it done again......taking down the Lady Bobcats by 10 last night, although when Coach West took out his primary players with 2:50 to go they were leading by 16.  The two posts....Stephens and Williams.....were just too much inside scoring 17 and 16 points apiece.  The defense kept the Twins to a combined 22 points which was off-set by the post scoring of Oneida.  Oneida's guards didn't score a ton of points but they played exceptionally well on the defensive side and Newport (Sophmore Point Guard) had 10 assists as she often found her posts for easy finishes.  Still safely in the drivers seat right now with Wartburg coming up Friday.   Go Indians

Saw the game as well and Oneida played a really good game. They are a solid team and deserve to be in the district lead at 5-0. OS appeared to be tired having played 4 games in 6 days) no excuses, last night Oneida was the better team and deserved to be in the drivers seat. Since the OS injured players have returned they are not a bad team at 4-1 in the district They are hanging in there.

The district season is half over and there are a lot of games left.

Current District Standings:

Oneida                 5-0

Oliver Springs      4-1

Oakdale               4-2

Wartburg              3-4

Coalfield               2-3

Still have a shot

Jellico                  1-5       much improved team

Sunbright            1-5

So that was OS first district loss...?  Oakdale at 4-2 is a big surprise because they have very little depth and they have had some injuries.  Jellico has scared a few people, but at 1-5 they are in serious need of wins to actually show their improvement.  Losing to Sunbright this year isn't going to build any confidence for them.  Coalfield is very up and down as is Wartburg.  Kinda depends on which team shows up on a given night.  Oneida has arguably the most solid interior play and if their guards are hitting the three ball, they can play with just about anyone.  I like our chances.

Yep first district loss. Oakdale is always a threat with Fred Snow, he is a great X&O guy and uses what he has to it's fullest. You have to say Jellico is much improved for the simple fact that are scaring folks this year. You can't take them lightly or they could ruin your night.

I agree Oneida is the best team right now and could very well be in the end, Everyone still has several games road.

Oneida is in the drivers seat for the regular season championship, But with the DIstrict tournament at Wartburg it always seems to be an adventure.

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
    • I know most Pirate starters were seniors last year. Im not sure how accurate it is but someone said we only have 3 seniors. That Prep team will probably make some noise this coming season too.
