Smith County @ Upperman

Recommended Posts

As far as the stats go for the QB, to put it in perspective, I played with a 2 time Mr. Football winner for back. In some of those games if the coach wouldn't have pulled him out in the middle of the second quarter, he could've had maybe close to 1000 yards in a single game with possibly 10 tds. Our schedule was Smith Co., Gordonsville, Upperman whom by the way Westmoreland is 14 and 0 against since 1976, Cannon Co., Bledsoe Co., and Jackson Co. With Portland, Goodpasture, and Trousdale as the non region teams, Gordonsville was non region as well. With Scottsville KY there to. About 6 of those games he could have literally had as many yards and tds as he wanted but they sat him. So the teams y'all have played so far maybe a lot of folks would've had those stats.

You make some good points. But, in the mid 90's, Bledsoe,Macon,Smith(Dyer years), Cannon, Scottsville and Gordonsville all stunk. And I do beleave I heard, in 96, you did beat UHS, but they won the district and went to the semi finals.

You just made my point for me. I'd say the teams you have played to this point have stunk as well, and yes those teams did stink for the most part back then. That's why our starters only got to play maybe a half. I suspect your man is playing 4 quarters against sub par competition. I could be wrong.

first off, I have only seen UH verse White Co in scrimmage and verse Gordonsville so I can't comment.I live in Rickman so I try to see as many diffrent good games a I can in the area. I do read the paper were the backup qb, before hurt, has had a td in 2 diffrent games, and last week the third stringer lead them to two scores. So I think he is not playing the whole game. And by years end, I think Gordonsville is 8-2 and a second or third round team in the playoffs.

Dude...you can drop the Rickman thing. It's not too difficult to know who you support. You are an U coach or one certain player's relative.

How did Upperman get so good so fast?

They have a group of 18 seniors that have played together since many of them were six and they have practiced three hours a day, five days a week, eleven months of the year for three years - success never comes easy or quick in football unless you can recruit. Their schedule has been easy so far - Gordonsville and Smith County were down more than expected. There are many games left to play though.

UC man, let me correct you about Bledsoe in the mid 90's. My junior and senior years were a combined 18-5 with wins over Upperman both years, Smith , Livingston, York , and the like. This was 94-95 football seasons. Only district team we didn't beat was postman westy teams with Dobbs Brown, and crew. They were good. So were we. To say they stunk is pretty idiotic because bledsoe was down in 97 but made a decent run in 98 losing in second round to DCA by 7.

Gordonsville lost 18 starters from State championship team. I just don't see them being that good. Smith co has a new coach and lost several as well. The other teams, well we kinda know there probably weak most years.

    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
