You guys are playing a hard schedule and that will pay off in the end. I think you will go far in Class A. Your website (which is great by the way) says you beat Cleveland, but I read somewhere else that Cleveland won & your comment above indicates Cleveland won.  Just letting you know about the difference.

Thanks I'll make sure it gets corrected. Yeah our schedule is brutal hopefully it will pay off in April. Our kids seem to be fine staying upbeat and focused on the main goal.

The Bucs brutal schedule took to the road last night as it traveled to Division 2 Baylor School and lost 6-1. The Bucs played very well out hitting the Raiders, but couldn't come up with the timely hit as they stranded 11 base runners. Jim Cardwell (Sr.) and EJ Matthews (So.) both had two hits and most of the rest of the lineup had at least one hit. (Jr.) Josh Antwine threw very well but two costly errors lead to four unearned Raider's runs. The Bucs record fell to 2-6 on the season which they will take into a home encounter with Class AAA Walker Valley this Friday with first pitch slated for 5:00.

Monday, March 31, 2014 - by John Hunt Chattanoogan.com

Boyd-Buchanan baseball coach Josh Rider would like to see his Buccaneers play better defense, but wins rank higher on the priority list, especially when they come over a big district foe.

Such was the case at the Bucs' home field Monday afternoon as they rallied to beat the Silverdale Seahawks by a 7-5 final.

The Buccaneers improve to 6-8 overall and 1-0 in District 5-A while Silverdale falls to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in district play.

"We just need to play better defense as we need to support our pitchers better," said Rider after his team had rallied for five runs in the fifth inning to overcome an early Seahawk lead.

"That wasn't too bad as we finally broke through and started driving the baseball.  We'll take it any way we can get it.  Skyler pitched an exceptional game as he battled through some questionable defense.  And what about that final double play?  That was a freshman shortstop making the throw to a freshman first baseman," Rider praised the effort of Cade Evans, who fielded a grounder with two Seahawks aboard and fired to Colby Morgan at first.

The throw was a bit high, but Morgan made a spectacular leaping grab and alertly made the tag on River Crowther to end the game.

The Seahawks took the early lead with three runs in the first before Boyd-Buchanan trimmed the difference to one with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Nothing happened in the next three innings, but the Seahawks extended the lead to 4-2 with a single tally in the fifth before the Buccaneers took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Silverdale put two runners on with one out in the seventh and that's when Rider replaced starting pitcher Skyler Anderson with Jim Cardwell

Cardwell allowed a walk to Noah Rogers to load the bases before hitting Jordan Delashmitt with a pitch to force in the fifth run before the game-ending double play.

"I thought that we outplayed them except for that one inning, but give Boyd-Buchanan a lot of credit.  They got the hits when they needed them," said Seahawk coach Jonathan Adcock afterward.

"We have a bunch of young guys this year, but we have to learn how to win games like this.  We gave them some opportunities with bad defense and they gave us some, so we have to improve on that.

"We didn't play very well defensively.  Then we started getting the ball up and they made us pay.  The good news is that we get to play again tomorrow," Adcock nodded with  smile.

Delashmitt led off the game with a double to right-center and he scored the first run on a single by Crowther.  Michael Hawkins then reached on a two-out error before Christian Rogers ripped a two-run double to plate Crowther and Hawkins.

Cardwell led off the first for the Bucs with a single and scored on a single by Nathan Murrell after stealing second.  Murrell advanced on a single by Morgan and scored on a groundout by E.J. Matthews.

Christian Rogers scored the fourth run for Silverdale when a pickoff attempt to first bounced away as he skipped home from third after advancing on a Buccaneer error and a sacrifice bunt by Matt Millard.

Then the home-standing Bucs had one of their biggest innings of the season as they took the lead with five runs after sending 11 batters to the plate.

Cardwell reached on a one-out single, advanced to second on a bad pickoff attempt and then third on a stolen base before scoring on a single by Evans

Evans stole second and scored the second run on a double by MurrellMorgan followed with another single to drive in Murrell while Morgan then scored the fourth run on a single by E.J. Matthews.

Millard then came in to relieve Silverdale starter Josiah Green before walking Anderson and hitting Josh Antwine to load the bases.  Millard then plunked pinch-hitter Hunter Payne to drive in Matthews with the final run of the inning.

Anderson pitched around a single and an error in the sixth to deny any Silverdale runs before being replaced by Cardwell with one out and two on in the seventh.

The Bucs finished the game with seven runs on eight hits while commiting four errors.

Cardwell, Murrell, John Sewell and Morgan all had two hits for the Bucs while Evans and Matthews both had those run-scoring singles.

Silverdale countered with five runs on nine hits.  The Seahawks finished the game with three errors.

Delashmitt and Christian Rogers both had a pair of hits for the Seahawks while Chance Brown, Colton Rogers, Crowther, Green and Millard had one apiece.

Anderson went six and a third innings to pick up his second win as he struck out five and walked one while hitting a pair.  Cardwell earned his second save of the young season.

Green was the starter and loser for Silverdale who recorded one out in the fifth before being relieved by Millard.  Green is 2-1 now after allowing all eight Buccaneer hits.  He also had two strikeouts and two walks.

"Josiah has been our go-to guy all season and he's won some big games, but he wasn't as sharp today as he has been," Adcock explained.

These same two teams will play at Silverdale on Tuesday afternoon with the first pitch slated for 5 p.m.

Bucs Hammer Panthers To Get Back To .500!!!
April 4, 2014

The Bucs took the short road trip to sale Creek High School to take on the Panthers and saw not only its record get back to even on the year, 8-8, but their first homeruns of the season. The latter didn't take long to materialize as (Sr.) Jim Cardwell took Panther Pitcher Kyle Abbott's first pitch of the game deep over the Center Field wall for a 1-0 lead. The Bucs hit the ball well all night and were able to dispatch of the young panther squad in five innings 18-0. The Star of the game was (Jr.) Josh Antwine as he not only threw a one hitter striking out twelve on the mound, but hit his first career high school homerun and it was made better by a grand slam homerun. Josh was in control all night throwing 53 strikes to just 8 balls and if not for an opposite bloop single in the bottom of the fifth with one out he would of had the dream evening for a pitcher.

The Bucs offense also had other stars as both (Jr.) John Sewell and (Jr.) Hunter Payne had three hits, a double, and three rbi's. The Bucs (Fr.) phenom shortstop Cade Evans was 2x2 with 4 rbi's on the night as well. The Bucs have now went 6-1 in its past seven games after a seven game losing streak against some of the best competition in the area earlier this month. They will be back in action tonight when the Lions of Red Bank comes to the swamp for a 5:00 first pitch start.

Bucs Have Thrilling Comeback to Start Weekend!!
April 11, 2014

The Bucs tough weekend got off to a great start when they were able to get off the deck in the seventh inning and beat Meigs county 5-4 last night. In a game that saw both starting pitchers crusing, saw one of the wildest finishes of the season as the Bucs scored five times in the top of the seventh for the victory which saw their winning streak grow to eight games and push their overall record to 13-8. (So.) Brandon Willingham dominated the Tigers all evening, but in the sixth inning things come unglued for the entire team played one of its strangest defensive innings of the 2014 campaign. The Inning started when a drop third strike turned into a wild throw to first and the Tigers had their lead off guy on and then a single to left had Meigs with runners on first and third and no outs, but Brandon got the next batter to pop up which set the stage for the crazyness. The Bucs would proceed to botch two sucide squeezes, commit two routine errors, and walk two batters and at the end of the sixth the Tigers lead 4-0 with none of the runs being earned.

The Bucs then showed the gathering just what kind of team this 2014 bunch is by having one of its best innings of the year against the Tigers closer Dustin Kennedy. Leadoff hitter (Jr.) Josh Antwine drilled a 1-2 curve into right center to start the inning. He was followed by a single up the middle by (Jr.) John Sewell, Line Drive Single to Left by (Sr.) Jim Cardwell to fill the bases for (Fr.) Cade Evans who promptly drilled a 1-2 Curve into center for two runs and the Bucs had cut the deficit to 4-2. After a visit by Meigs Coach Justin Jennings, the Bucs went to work again when (Sr.) Nathan Murrell hit a deep fly ball to center for a sac fly and the lead was cut to 4-3. The Bucs then loaded the bases again when (Fr.) Colby Morgan drilled a single to center and (So.) EJ Matthews was hit by a pitch to bring up (Jr.) Skyler Anderson, who was 3x3 on the evening going into the AB, hit a sac fly to right Field to tie the game which brought high drama when the Catcher (Jr.) Hunter Payne who started the entire mess in the 6th with his error finished it by drilling a first pitch fastball into right field scoring courtesy runner (Sr.) Garet Baker with the go ahead run.

The Bucs sent Brandon back out to face the Tigers best hitter Jake Moon who he had struck out the previous two ab's but moon drilled a 2-2 fastball into left and a single. The Bucs skipper, Josh Rider, took to the mound and patted Willingham on the back for a great job and turned the game over to hard throwing Lefty John Sewell who saw his 0-1 fastball hit weakly to 3B Antwine who turned a sweet 5-4-3 double play. After the Tigers blooped a single with their next hitter, Sewell got Kennedy to fly out to CF Jim Cardwell and the Bucs had finished off its most impressive comeback of the season winning 5-4.

The Bucs record inproved to 13-8 and will be tested greatly tonight when Georgia state power Calhoun comes to AT&T park for a contest that sees a first pitch at 7:15. Gates open at 6:00 for tonights affair.

Boyd is loaded every year in 1A baseball. They just simply reload. They are my favorite to make it to the state tournament from this area.  Good luck

Thanks! There are alot of good teams in our region which is very underated in the state. SP, Marion, Whitwell, Silverdale, CSAS, Copper Basin, and Grace who is so much improved are all very capable of making runs, so we are taking it one game at a time for sure!

I keep up with AA more but you named off almost every team in the districts. lol Surely they all arent capable of winning the district.  I have only seen a couple of these teams play this year.

which of those teams have you seen play? and yes IMO any of those three (SP, MC, and Whitwell) could win district 6A..and in our district Silverdale is very good, CSAS has three very good pitchers, Copper has Spargo, and Grace is much improved so they could put a crinkle in anyone's off season plans, but most likely it will come down to the top three (US, S'Dale, and CSAS) on winning district.

Yellow Jackets "Register" 4-2 Win Over Boyd-Buchanan At AT&T Field Calhoun (Ga.) Pitcher Four-Hits Bucs, Peek Slams Two-Run Homer
Friday, April 11, 2014 - by Larry Fleming
Calhoun used solid hitting, pitching and defense Friday night to “Register†a 4-2 high school baseball win over Boyd-Buchanan at 6,362-seat AT&T Field where the Class AA Chattanooga Lookouts normally ply their trade.

Both teams knew their surroundings and save two Yellow Jackets errors in the first inning played flawless baseball.

“It’s a different kind of game, for sure,†Bucs coach Josh Rider said. “But you have to keep it in perspective. We came over here to compete and win a game, but we also wanted to enjoy the experience as well. You don’t get to play often in a facility like this.â€

It was the second game in a professional stadium for the Yellow Jackets (15-3), who played at State Mutual Stadium, home of the Class A Rome Braves, earlier this season.

“It’s a treat for players and coaches,†Calhoun coach Chip Henderson said. “To play in Chattanooga where the Lookouts play is pretty sweet. You’re still looking at 90-foot bases, 60-foot-6 inches (to the mound), but the fences are a little deeper and the outfield is more spacious.â€

Three players stood out for Calhoun, which has a rich baseball tradition that includes state championships in 1974, 2000, 2005 and 2010 and a runner-up finish in 2007.

Right-handed pitcher Jon Register fired a complete game four-hitter and after giving up two runs in the first three innings, choked off the Buccaneers’ bats to win his third game without a loss. He struck out eight and walked one – that coming in the seventh inning.

The outfield fences – 330 feet to left field, 400 in center and 325 to right – didn’t bother first baseman Brett Peek, who went 3-for-4, including a two-run homer to continue his torrid hitting over a two-week span.

Sophomore second baseman Jarrett Carden, making only his second varsity start, ripped a 2-2 pitch from Bucs reliever Nathan Murrell up the middle to drive in two runs for a 4-2 lead that stood up the rest of the way.

Aside from Peek’s three hits, third baseman Spencer Cross had two hits, including a second-inning triple, and shortstop Avery Johnson added two singles in four at-bats.

“Peek is the hottest hitter we’ve got right now,†Henderson said. “He’s wearing the ball out, hitting to all fields and hitting with authority.â€

Boyd-Buchanan (13-9) had four players – Jim Cardwell, Cade Evans, Colby Morgan and E.J. Matthews – with one hit each.

Murrell, Colby Morgan and E.J. Matthews also had singles off Register, but only Morgan managed to get past first base.

Rider used five pitchers – that was his plan all along – with Skyler Anderson starting and going two innings. Murrell worked two innings while John Sewell, Josh Antwine and Cardwell each pitched one inning.

“I absolutely wanted to use several pitchers tonight,†Rider said. “We go back into district play next week, so we wanted to give a few guys a chance to throw.â€

The Bucs, who rallied with a four-run seventh inning to beat Meigs County on Thursday, scored quickly against Register.

With one out in the first, Register hit Cade Evans. Register tried to pick Evans off at first, but his throw sailed into foul territory down the right-field line and Evans raced to third. The throw from right field to third was wide of the mark and Evans went home with the game’s first run.

Calhoun’s John Alan Kendrick hit Murrell’s first pitch into right-center field for a single to start Calhoun’s third inning. He went to second on a groundout and jogged home on Peek’s towering homer.

“That’s my first one this season,†Peek said. “I thought it was foul off the bat, but I’m glad it got out of there fair.â€

Henderson, standing in the third-base coaching box, had a good view of Peek’s bomb.

“He got a pitch up and in and got it up,†He said. “I could tell by the flight of the ball it was going over the left fielder’s head. It was just a matter of whether it was going to stay fair or go foul.â€

Peek’s homer wiped out Boyd-Buchanan’s 1-0 lead, triggered in the first inning when Cade Evans was hit by a pitch. Register’s attempted pickoff throw to first sailed into right field foul territory and Evans scampered to third.

And when the outfield throw in was wide of Cross at third, Evans raced home with the game’s first run.

In the Bucs’ half of the third, Cardwell singled to right-center and was sacrificed to second by Evans’ bunt. Cardwell moved to third on a groundout and scored when Register uncorked a wild pitch.

Boyd-Buchanan’s offense dried up after that.

Including Evans’ sacrifice bunt, Register retired 10 straight, the last two by strikeouts, before Murrell singled to left with one out in the sixth. Murrell didn’t get past first, however.

“We put guys on in the first couple innings,†Rider said, “but we went dry for a while and didn’t get another hit until the sixth. It was tough to manufacture anything because we weren’t getting many base runners.â€

Register issued his only walk to Anderson starting the seventh inning, but pinch-hitter Brandon Willingham struck out, Antwine popped out to third and Sewell struck out to end the game.

“They have a great ballclub,†Rider said of Calhoun. “Their pitcher threw a great game and kept us off balance with the curveball.â€

Henderson said that when Register’s curve is working, opposing teams are in trouble.

“Jon is able to get ahead in the count with the fastball and finish off some batters with his breaking ball,†Henderson said. “When he’s on with that thing – and he landed some tonight – it presents some problems.â€

Register threw 104 pitches and 67 were strikes. Seven of his strikeouts came in the final four innings when Register had complete control of the knee-buckling curveball.

He also got in on the Yellow Jackets’ solid defensive play.

In the Bucs’ fourth, Anderson hit a high chopper back to the mound. The ball almost got over Register, but he grabbed it with his bare hand while stumbling over the back of the mound and threw to first to nail Anderson.

Register will probably remember his strong effort at AT&T Field for years to come.

“It’s a totally different atmosphere,†he said. “Knowing some of the pro players that have played here, it’s a privilege for us to play in this ballpark. We put in a lot of work, so I think we deserve it. If we work had maybe some of us will be playing on a field like this someday.â€

The Bucs had to wait a couple days to play its district contest against the Copper Basin cougars, but for (So.) Brandon Willingham it was well worth the wait. Brandon threw a complete game three hitter allowing no earned runs or walks and tallied a school record 17 strikeouts. Brandon was in control all day throwing just 101 pitches with 73 being strikes. Willingham saw his record go to 6-0 on the season while the Bucs improved to 5-0 in the district and 14-9 overall.

Brandon received all the offense he would need in the first two innings when (Sr.) Jim Cardwell lead off the first with a walk stole second then was sacrificed to third by Cade Evans where he scored when Nathan Murrell hit a groundout to the shortstop for a Bucs 1-0 lead. The Bucs added on in the second when Jim Cardwell doubled in two runs for a 3-0 lead then added two more in the third when Hunter Payne doubled in two more and the Bucs had given Brandon the cushion he needed to roll through the Cougar hitters. The only hiccup for Willingham came in the fifth inning when a lead off double and an error put runners on first and third with no out but Brandon struckout the next batter, got the next guy to groundout to thrird, before striking out Kimsey to end the inning. Brandon would finish strong striking out the last five Cougar hitters he retired.

The Bucs will take on the Cougars Saturday morning at 10:00 in Copperhill which will be played around their entry into the Lookout valley Invitational which kicks off today when they play the host squad with first pitch slated for 2:30.
