Again, who did Pop loose his two matches to?  I know he beat Garrett Alexander in the finals of the McCallie tournament (Alexander did not place in D1, not close to being in top 6).  Who else did he get beat by?  Dooley and Klingingsmith less losses combined.

Also,  McCallie tournament "The 152-pound bout, with Soddy-Daisy's Gage Richmond rallying to decision Baylor's Blake Sutherland 6-4 in overtime, was voted best match by the coaches. Richmond scored a tying reversal shortly before the third-period whistle, then won with a quick takedown in OT"

145 lb junior  Luke Hamilton pinned Gage Richmond in a very lopsided match to win the state.

No question D1 head and shoulders over D2

sorry no way..  138 may hang.. but at 160#  the d11 champ would not be in the top 6.  look at the history and the numbers.  Popp is a good wrestler,  but he would not be in the to 6 in DI.  Garret Alexander did not even place, Cotton did not place....you think Popp could?  2nd place  Naughten.... he got pinned three times in the first period by the D1 champ.

Popp is a great kid and  a good wrestler, but he is no where close to Kingensmith that took second or Alexander that did not place.

Wow!!!

I think first off its D2.....Or JV

Mr. Popp, would not only place but I believe that he would have had a great chance at OW in D1...

Alexander wasn't right the last three weeks of the season but he did make it to one match out of placing. I'd say that's darn near close to placing. No excuses for Garrett, he just didn't appear focused for a long stretch. 160's in D1 are good no doubt but Popp is really good too. I think Luke beat Gage twice badly, tells me the kids pretty good. Another example of y the kids should be in one division. Remove all doubt...to an extent:)

He got beat by the #14 and #19 in the country. One in overtime and one by regular decision. Baylor took a road trip to Illinois in January. All that records tell you is the type of competition you wrestle. Popp hasn't lost to anyone from TN since the State Finals in 2012 vs. Baker. There are 2 freshmen who are starting at NC state and Army that he beat last year. If you don't think he'd place/win in D1, you're crazy.

I agree. Popp would have a good run but it would be hard for him to place. Everybody that didn't place at 160 was very close. Seemed like a hard weight class to place in. Just look at who competed. Cotton and Alexander didn't place who both in my mind should have. Just about every match was close in the 160 weight class. Majority of the wins were by decisions with very little majors and pins. Every wrestler in that weight class were hard-nosed competitors that don't want to lose. Sorry Popp. You don't take D1

Haha she'd be going crazy right now. But she's 100% the reason I didn't want to see Sommers. I mean, he can't remember yesterday let alone the crap he gave me a few years ago at the state tourney, but I wasn't taking the chance.

Btw your grandson has a wrestling shoe collection going from a lot of people around the state donating. It'd be cool if his granddaddy donated too, I'll pay u for shipping. Just an old pair.

    • there will be a couple of teams, that could make some noise
    • Dyersburg may win back to back to back championships. They are going to be hands down the best 3A team. Plus their District/region/sectionals are not very good. They basically just have to make it to region out of a 5 team district that has a few decent teams. South Gibson will be okay but they graduate their best player and there is nobody in the region 7 or region 8 who is going to compete with them.
    • I remember very well watching things change in the late 80's and yes it's all schools. Most people that are in charge today have any idea because they were raised and taught under this social experiment so they don't have a clue. Anyone that does see the truth for what it is usually try and hide it by blending in so that the School Gestapo doesn't round them up and take them to the Fuhrer ( kindly putting it ). Yes it is all schools not just Maryville. This train ride is not headed in a good direction and if the public had seen a movie of what's happening now back in 1980 everyone would have been headed home afterwards to change underware.
    • Hoping to make the playoffs.
    • You are so correct!  It’s really 99.9% of academia want to change to way that education is not only taught but the way it is viewed.  The pendulum has definitely swung as far to the left as possible and eventually will swing to the right much too far.  I have always  said that politics and one’s personal religious views need to stay out of education,  but for the last 40 years education has been running full throttle to what we have today.  If the social experiment that we are currently experiencing continues it is only a matter of time before the public school system in the USA completely collapses and all kids attend private schools or even worse don’t go to school.
