Wildcats getting ready for when it really counts...

Hixson wrestlers improve to 13-4

December 17th, 2014by Ward Gossett in SportsprepsRead Time: 2 mins.

Joshua Brooks of Ooltewah controls Parker Ward of Hixson, foreground, in the 152-pound division as Ooltewah hosts Hixson in a high school wrestling match Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014, in Chattanooga, Tenn. Brooks won by a pin, but Hixson won the match by a team score of 42-32.

Working with a patchwork lineup due to injury, illness and weight descent is nothing new for most wrestling programs as they head into the last weekend of competition before Christmas.

That doesn't mean, though, that the grind doesn't get old, especially when coupled with would-be competitors who are still learning how to control their weight and how to listen or read group messages about departure times, etc.

Hixson coach Garrick Hall had suffered through one of those type days Tuesday -- an overweight wrestler eating chicken fingers and ranch dressing for lunch and a handful of text messages wanting to know when the Wildcats were leaving school for their tri-meet with Howard and host Ooltewah.

Never mind that his team improved to 13-4 with wins over Ooltewah (42-32) and Howard (72-12), the veteran was still contemplating rescuing the letter of resignation he'd started and then trashed earlier in the day, especially after one of his freshmen walked up belatedly and asked him where to put his dirty singlet.

Hall is feeling the effects of an extended football season and trying to assist there while still keeping a handle on wrestling. He's looking forward to a Christmas break as much as Hixson's students.

"They're driving me crazy, but I am happy with where we are competitively, especially with what we have going because of injuries and illness," he said. "There is lots of room for improvement, but we have a lot of kids scrapping and fighting."

Hixson figures to be among the contenders for the Class A/AA dual and traditional state titles, although the Wildcats had at least two returnees from last year's team who basically decided wrestling was too demanding.

"They're young but they're still well-coached and they're putting competitors out there," Ooltewah coach Bryant Blackmon said. "By late January into February, they'll be ready to go."

Ooltewah raced out to a 12-0 lead as Jordan Chaffi (160) won on an injury default and Tyler Reid got a pin. By the time the teams reached the turn at heavyweight, though, Hixson had grabbed a 15-14 lead on pins from Chris Nicholson and Guiliane Palacio and a decision by Brody Gregory.

The meet would have been tied as they headed into the 106-pound match, but Mack Fairley, although he won at 195, cost his team a point due to an unsportsmanlike-conduct call from referee Travis Wright.

Hixson went on a tear from there and finished with pins from Cameron Russell (106) and Isaac Yates (126) and forfeit victories for Jacob Newman (113) and Cederick Harris (132).

While he had praise for Josh Brooks (152) and Chaffi, Blackmon focused on the team, which had six medalists and a fourth-place finish in an invitational tournament at Auburn, Ala., last weekend.

"There are still a lot of technical things we're doing wrong, and some of it comes down to being disciplined in aspects of what we're asking them to do," he said. "Overall we're still a very young and inexperienced team. As we continue to fix the technical side of things and they continue to battle, we obviously expect to improve."

Patriot wrestlers split with Science Hill, South Greene

Posted: Wednesday, December 17, 2014 3:00 pm

From Staff Reports | 0 comments

Jefferson County High School’s wrestling team split a pair of matches Tuesday night at Science Hill, losing to the Hilltoppers before defeating South Greene.

Had Jefferson County been able to win three matches that it forfeited to Science Hill, the event may have turned out differently. Instead, the Patriots spotted the Hilltoppers with 18 points, forfeiting the 170, 182 and 106 pound weight classes in a 50-18 loss.

The Patriots opened the Science Hill match with six straight losses to fall behind, 31-0. At 145 pounds, Hilltoppers’ Arthur James pinned JCHS’s Hayden Dome in the first 19 seconds. Then at 152 pounds, Jefferson County’s Stephen Harville lost a 13-9 decision. Patriot 160-pounder Austin Baker was pinned in the opening period of his match with Science Hill’s Richard King-Jessee, and then JCHS forfeited both the 170 and 182 pound classes.

At 195 pounds, Jefferson County senior Virgil English lost an 11-3 decision to Hilltoppers’ Hunter Bagley. Jefferson County picked up its first two wins in the 220 and 285 pound matches when both J.P. Latham and Logan Townsend earned pins over their opponents.

A forfeit in the 106 pound class gave the Hilltoppers a 37-12 advantage, and Jefferson County would need to win out to have a shot at the match.

It wasn’t to be as Patriot 113 and 120 pounders Kyle Burns and Cody Harris both lost decisions. Burns lost a close 8-4 decision in his match, while Harris lost a major decision, 13-0.

Both Bryson Hux (126 pounds) and Luke Collins (138 pounds) won their matches by decision, and Blaise Banks (132 pounds) was pinned in his match, making the final score 50-18 in favor of the Hilltoppers.

Jefferson County only had to wrestle five matches against South Greene, which forfeited seven weight classes to give the Patriots a 42-point advantage. Jefferson County forfeited the 182-pound class, and both teams forfeited the 106 pound match.

The Patriots won the match by a 57-18 margin.

Jefferson County picked up wins in the 160, 220 and 285 pound classes. At 160 pounds, Patriot Austin Baker earned a pin over Caleb Brown in the last 20 seconds of the match.

In the 220 pound bout, Deven Hills won a 12-8 decision over Greene’s Richie Lowery, and then at 285 pounds, Dakota Moungey pinned Matthew Habberstad in the opening 30 seconds.

Jefferson County’s Hayden Dome (152 pounds) and Glenn Carter (170 pounds) lost their respective matches by pin.

Jefferson County returns to the mat tonight to play host to Volunteer High School at the Patriot Academy. Weigh-ins are scheduled for 5:30 p.m., with matches to begin around 6:30 p.m.

Mustangs, Blue Raiders battle Tullahoma, Alcoa in 4-way in ‘The Stable’

For the second time this season, Walker Valley and Cleveland shared mat time with common opponents. Thursday inside “The Stable†at Walker Valley the Mustangs picked up a victory over Alcoa, ranked No. 1 in A-AA, then fell to a tough Tullahoma team, 54-15. The Blue Raiders walked away with two wins wrestling to a 34-28 win over Tullahoma in their first match before putting Alcoa away 61-12 in the closer.

“All-in-all we did good just to get a lineup out there tonight. We're like a lot of teams. I'm sure Alcoa, Cleveland and Tullahoma are feeling the same thing. We've got guys sick and we've got some injured. This is just the time of year where it's tough to get a lineup in there,†said Mustangs coach Al Morris. “No excuses, but we're going through all that and on top of it we are a young team. The bottom line is, we've just got to keep working to get better. We've done that. From the beginning of the year to this point we are an improved team.â€

The Mustangs wrestled in front of the Tornados the entire match in their first win of the night. Joseph Munoz picked up the first pin for Walker Valley at 132 pounds. Austin Gregory (145), Jalon Martin (195), Ric Kennett (220) and Clay Pankey) all put their opponent's shoulders to the mat for Walker Valley.

The Blue Raiders got only two pins against the Wildcats of Tullahoma with Joseph Bowers (138) and Ezra Taylor earning six points apiece for Cleveland.

“We did alright. I think we got ourselves in some situations against a tough Tullahoma team. They've got some fighter on their team. They are doing a good job and getting better,†said Cleveland coach Jake Yost. “I felt like we got out hustled a little bit and I don't necessarily like to see us get out hustled.â€

Tullahoma picked up the pace against the Mustangs in the second match of the night for both teams. The Wildcats got pins at 113, 120, 126, 145, 170, 182 and 285. The Mustangs earned pins from Ed Johnson at 138 and Kennett.

“Tonight's results had more to do with our lineup than it was our effort, but we've got a few guys who need to check themselves out a little and make sure they are doing all they can to get better and improve,†said Morris in the loss to the team coached by Morris' son Al junior. “If somebody has to beat us I'm glad it's my son's team. He won't rub it in on me until maybe some time this summer. But I never like to lose even to my son.â€

The Raiders were able to take a bit of a breather against Alcoa running away with the win.

Cody Mathews got Cleveland started with a pin at 120, Victor Barbosa followed with a pin at 132 and Bowers and Taylor both picked up their second pin of the night. Riley Stevison (182), John Gaither (220) and Trey Simpson closed out the night for the Blue Raiders with pins.

“We're working to get better getting better. We're trying to get where we need to be. We're a little banged up and have some guys out of the lineup. But that's what everybody's going through this time of year so you've just got to fight through it and keep believing in the process and putting one foot in front of the other and try to get better,†said Yost. “We're definitely making progress. It's just keeping at it.â€

Mat Mocs try to end two-meet slide

December 20th, 2014by Ward Gossett in Sports - CollegeRead Time: 2 mins.

There is an urgency in the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling room to get back on the right track, and the Mocs hope to do that today in Norfolk, Va., where they tackle 22nd-ranked Old Dominion.

UTC coach Heath Eslinger plans to weigh in a pair of freshmen for the meet, which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Freshman Garrett Alexander (1-3) is the lone wrestler scheduled to weigh in at 165 pounds, but freshman Kamaal Shakur will weigh in at 157 and it's possible that he or 157-pound Austin Sams will wrestle at 165.

The Mocs' other 165-pound candidate, Jared Pressley, is out with a staph infection in his knee.

"We have to see how the dual is going. We want to figure out the best lineup, but we're here to win," Eslinger said Friday.

He might have burned a redshirt season for Shakur regardless.

"Tennessee pulled (quarterback) Josh Dobbs out of a redshirt, and that worked out pretty well," Eslinger said.

Shakur's appearance today would be an attempt to shore up the lineup. The team has lost two close meets in a row, and the general feeling is that the Mocs (3-2) let prime opportunities against Purdue and North Carolina slip through their fingers.

"We've got to get back on track, and this is a great opportunity," Eslinger said. "We need to do what we should've done the last two matches.

The Mocs lost 19-16 to Purdue and 18-17 to North Carolina and surrendered their Top 25 national ranking.

They are still feeling the loss of Corey Mock, one of the team's three senior anchors along with Sean Boyle (125) and Nick Soto (133). And the 18th-ranked Soto has dropped three of his last five matches, including a pin against Purdue.

"Obviously 165 is a question right now, but I think overall we're pretty darn solid bottom to top. There are a lot of guys wrestling well," Eslinger said. "What we have to do is get six or seven wrestling well on the same day. Guys are showing they can win. They just need to do it together. If we had we'd be 5-0 right now."

Old Dominion, which is 2-2, has a 16-15 win over Purdue. The Monarchs have five wrestlers ranked in the top 25 for their weight classes: No. 20 Brandon Jeske (125), No. 12 Alexander Richardson (149), No. 14 Tristan Warner (165), No. 4 Jack Dechow (184) and No. 18 Jacob Henderson (285).

Chattanooga is 1-2 all-time vs. ODU and lost 31-9 in their last meeting during the 2011-12 season.
