The Hendersonville 1999 team was a great team that never made it to state. About two close calls against Oakland and they would have advanced. Oakland should not have won the game and HHS would have gone all the way and taken the state title. 12-0 and then Oakland got lucky.

The 1996 Hampton (10-0) team was a very good team that never won state. They made it to the 3rd round and got beat by an eventual private school and the eventual state champion Know Webb in a game that they should have won. Anybody who saw this team would tell you that they were the real deal.

1996 Goodpasture Cougars were probably the most dominent team in any classification that year. They were coming off a state title the year and knew they had a chance to make history. Rolled through the regular season 10-0, never trailed in any game, scored an average of 41 pts per game, while the defense gave up 6 a game. In the playoffs had a scare in the QF at Martin Westview kicked a FG with 1:00 to go to win 15-13. Fell behind in the Clinic Bowl to Webb 13-0 after 1st quarter came back to make 13-12 at the half, Webb scored after a Cougar turnover Goodpasture then fought back and made it 20-20 after a TD and 2 pt. But ran back the ensuing KO the 9 yard line and scored 4 plays later.

 

 

Had QB Justin Purkey (Vandy) threw for over 1800 yeard and 20 TDS, RB/MLB Maurice Haynes(UT-Chatt) ran for 1500 yards, WR Brandon O'Neal over 50 catches and 10 TD's along with 2 KO ret TD's. The Best def line in the state. DE Joe Reid (UT) 9 sacks, DT Bobby Wilson 6 sacks, NG's Aaron Gift 3 sacks (TSU) and Steve Powers 3 sacks, DE Eric Fontenot (Liberty) 7 sacks; along with LB's Philip Ezell, Lee Miller and Haynes did not allow even a 50 yard rushing game untill the Clinic Bowl. Owns the schools longes winning streak 24 games in a row. And the record for most wins by a 4 year senior class 39.

I think Brentwood Academy was 4th in the USA today poll at the season's end. Not bad That may have been the team with the big linebacker that signed with Tennessee, any other time I could name off all sorts of players but it's too late.

You would have to say that the 1998 South Pittsburg team with Eddie Moore at tailback was a great team. It was probably better than there 1999 state team. South Pittsburg led the nation that year in scoring. They had Trousdale 21-7 with two minutes before the half and they turned the ball over twice and they tied it up and South pitt never recovered.

Blew it to riverdale in the finals on a botched option that allowed riverdale to take the lead with just a few minutes left. That was a great team...Corey Peterson, Kevin Smith, T. Patterson

AND HOW COULD I FORGET MY MAN JONATHAN PRESLEY AND THE 93 TEAM WAS REAL STRONG 9-1 IN THE REGULAR SEASON AND WON THE REIGON LED BY GREG TRIPLETT,SHAVEZ JOBE, TONY CANTRELL, STEVE ROSE ,SHANE THORNE,JADE SELLARS,CHARLES MOSS,MIKE MOSCARDELLI,TROY ADAMS,RYAN AULDS,MO THOMPSON,RON SEAY,KEVIN HASTY,JON BRYSON,BILL GARRETT,ZACH GREER,SCOTT KIZER,SCOTT WORTMAN,THAT TEAM BEAT THE STATE RUNNER-UP RIVERDALE,AND THEN KILLED REDBANK 34-6 AND THEN LOST ON A REAL REAL REAL CLOSE CALL AT SOME TEAM IN KNOX.THE ENDED UP 10-2 WITH 8 PLAYERS MAKING ALL REIGON WITH THE REIGON COACH OF THE YEAR ALONG WITH THE O AND D PLAYER OF THE YEAR IN THAT REIGON. ALSO 9 MADE ALL MID STATE FROM 1ST TO 3RD TEAM AND 8 TO MAKE ALL STAT FROM 1ST TO 2ND AND HONORABLE MENTION THOSE WAS SOME GOOD TEAMS THAT NEVER MADE IT TO THE STATE FINALS. EVEN THOUGH I PLAYED AT LEBANON.THE 1992 RIVERDALE TEAM WITH B. DAVIS AT QB WAS A GOOD TEAM TOO.AND THE 93 TEAM WAS GOOD WITH DUKE,PEEBLES,MCGOWAN,BRYANT,SMITH CARNEYAND GRIFFIN

DB in both 98' and 00', especially 2000. That team was stacked with speed. They ran into a healthy Gerald Riggs in a monsoon, lost in the semis, and still finished 2nd. They held Riggs to his lowest rushing total of that year by a lot. Two great teams that just couldn't finish it off.
