dhstennis
I almost did it again. I've selected eleven games that I thought were intriguing enough to be included in this weeks edition of Big Games in Memphis. You know that I've taking a liking to giving the selection of games their own unique name. I'm calling these the Enthralling Eleven. The Enthralling Eleven will have some added information to go along with the school's name. I'm going to include district, classification, overall, and district records. I know some will appreciate the added information. Yes ... small privates are included ... With no further ado ... I present to you: Big Games in Memphis - Week 8 (Enthralling Eleven) Game 1: (D1 14-AAA, 5A) Millington (6-1, 3-0) @ (D1 14-AAA, 6A) Arlington (6-2, 3-0) Game 2: (D2-AA W) CBHS (4-4, 1-0) @ (D2-AA W) Briarcrest (5-2, 1-0) Game 3: (D1 14-AAA, 5A) Munford (6-1, 2-0) @ (D1 15-AAA, 6A) Collierville (5-2, 3-1) Game 4: (D1 16-AAA, 5A) East (6-1, 3-1) @ (D1 16-AAA, 6A) Whitehaven (6-0, 3-0) Game 5: D2-A, West 1) ECS (6-1, 4-0) @ (D2-A, West 1) Northpoint (5-2, 1-1) Game 6: D1 16-AA, 3A) Raleigh-Egypt (3-4, 3-2) @ D1 16-AA, 3A) Fairley (3-4, 2-3) Game 7: (D2-A West 1) Lausanne (5-2, 0-2) @ (D2-A West 1) FACS (5-2, 0-2) Game 8: (D1 15-AAA, 5A) Ridgeway (6-1, 4-0) @ (D1 15-AAA, 6A) Houston (7-0, 3-0) Game 9: (D1 16-AAA, 5A) Hamilton (4-3, 1-2) @ (D1 16-AAA, 5A) Melrose (5-2, 1-2) Game 10: (D2-AA West) St. Benedict (4-3, 0-1) @ (D2-AA West) MUS (4-3, 0-1) Game 11: (D2-A West 2) St. George's (3-4, 2-0) @ (D2-A West 2) TRA (5-3, 1-1) That's it. kwc
From the Commercial Appeal Prep Football Preview: Week 8 John Varlas A pair of high school football games last week in Arizona produced two polar-opposite performances, the kinds of things that could only happen under Friday night lights. In a game that would have made Buddy Ryan break out in a cold sweat, Higley High from the town of Gilbert defeated Apache Junction, 95-75. Yes, 95-75. The game, which lasted three hours and 37 minutes, saw the teams combine for over 1,600 yards of offense and 73 first downs. Higley sophomore quarterback Mason Crossland, who is “generously†listed at 5-7 and 140 pounds according to USA Today, threw for 641 yards and nine touchdowns. Hs opposite number, Adam Abbatacola, threw for 528 and eight and ran for two scores. “The defensive coaches want to stick hot needles in their eyes,†Higley coach Eddy Zubey told aia365.com. Or they could have cheered themselves by watching the highlights from Cesar Chavez High’s 61-6 defeat of Maryvale. The winning team in that one recorded 28 sacks, 10 by linebacker Hamilcar Rashed Jr. The sacks amounted to minus-223 yards for Maryvale. Amazingly, Cesar Chavez entered the contest without a victory and had given up over 40 points per game. And really, that tells you all you need to know about high school football; anything can — and will — happen. GAME OF THE WEEK (2) Ridgeway (6-1, 4-0) at (4) Houston (7-0, 3-0), 7 p.m. What to watch for: Houston has been pounding away at opponents all season, using its multifaceted running game to average over 300 yards per contest. The Mustangs will want to have as many time-consuming drives as they can; the less Ridgeway’s high-octane offense is on the field, the better Houston’s chances. DANDY DOZEN GAMES (5) East (6-1, 3-1 16-AAA) at (1) Whitehaven (6-0, 3-0), 7 p.m. What to watch for: The Tigers, who haven’t played since defeating Ridgeway on Sept. 26, better not even think about being rusty. East was the last local team to defeat Whitehaven in the regular season, winning 13-10 last year. The Mustangs have the talent to do it again, which should make for an intense, hard-hitting contest. (6) Southaven (6-1, 3-0 MHSAA 1-6A) at Grenada (7-1, 3-0), 7 p.m. What to watch for: Grenada, which has won seven straight since a 22-16 loss to West Point that opened the season, will be formidable in more ways than one. Chargers coach Ed Rich joked that he parked his truck on the practice field this week and ordered his players to try and move it in an effort to prepare for Grenada’s massive size up front. (7) Millington (6-1, 3-0 14-AAA) at (10) Arlington (6-2, 3-0), 7 p.m. What to watch for: The Tigers started lethargically in last week’s 19-0 loss to White Station and never really got going. They should be suitably motivated for the Trojans; the winner will be in the pole position for the regular-season district title. Overton (0-7, 0-3 16-AAA) vs. (8) Central (6-2, 2-2) at Crump, 7 p.m. What to watch for: Warriors star Deddrick Thomas is getting healthier by the week. But Central might not need much from the Mississippi State commitment against the struggling Wolverines, who have allowed 30 or more points in six of their seven games. St. Benedict (4-3, 0-1 Division 2-AA West) at (9) MUS (4-3, 0-1), 7 p.m. What to watch for: With both teams dropping their league openers, a victory here is vital. The Owls struggled offensively last time out against CBHS and will need to do better against an Eagles team that has been effective stopping the run. Northpoint (5-2, 1-1 Division 2-A West) at (11) ECS (6-1, 4-0), 7 p.m. What to watch for: Behind Christian Saulsberry and Nelson Fabrizius, Northpoint has one of the area’s top rushing offenses. ECS’ versatile attack can produce plenty of points as well, so this one could keep stat crews hopping. FRIDAY’S OTHER GAMES 7 p.m. — Bartlett at Bolton; Kingsbury at Cordova; Lausanne at FACS; Rossville Christian at Fayette Academy; Fayette Ware at Bolivar; St. Benedict at MUS; CBHS at Briarcrest; Munford at Collierville; Kirby at Germantown; St. George’s at Tipton-Rosemark; Brighton at Station Camp; Saltillo at Center Hill; DeSoto Central at Hernando; Horn Lake at Olive Branch; West Point at Lake Cormorant; Lewisburg at Clarksdale; Douglass vs. Manassas at the Fairgrounds; Fairley vs. Raleigh-Egypt at Freeman; Hamilton at Melrose; Mountain Home at Marion; Martin Luther King Prep vs. Westwood at Raleigh-Egypt; Oakhaven at BTW; Wooddale at Southwind; Jonesboro at West Memphis; DeSoto Academy at West Memphis Christian Edited October 17, 2014 by kwc
