Anybody know what position Scott Dirkson played, and what type of stats he had in 1988? I'm looking on the TN Preps website and seen he won Mr. Football 2A in '88. I'm going to guess he played RB.

Same question for Grant Swallows from LA. He won Mr. Football 3A in '97, but it specifies he was a back.

Poteete's name should be apart of that list too, but as we all know he finished second in '08 because he was cheated out of the award and lost out to the brother of a butter fingered WR from UT. The '08 3A winner was a 'big named' kid (Rogers), from an even bigger named school (David Lipscomb). His stats were laughable compared to other finalists. Even compared to all other players in TN, they were average at best. His name alone won that award for him.

Going strictly by the numbers so far, looks like

1-Upperman

2-Sequatchie

3-Smith County

4-DeKalb County

5-York

6-Grundy

7-Cannon

First five look very similar

How did you have it going into the season? I had Upperman and DC fighting it out for 1-2, and Smith at 3rd followed by York/Squatch at 4th, but I was slightly favoring York.

Now I think it will end up like this:

1. Upperman

2. Squatch

3. DC

4. SC

5.York

6.Grundy

7.Cannon

Upperman is what I thought they would be before the season, as well as Smith County. DC is a little worse than I originally thought. Squatch is way better than I imagined, and York is quite a bit better than I gave them credit for. I just didn't think their offense would come together this quickly, and I knew their defense would be bad.

I'm going

1. Squatch seems to have the most complete team

2. Upperman has many above average players but mistakes will cost them during region play

3. DC has the best player in the region at QB and if the rest of the team continues to improve throughout the season coul move up the ranks.

4. SC I don't to much about them besides that they always play hard and easily end the season higher than the four spot.

5. York looks like they are finding an offense which could turn their season around.

6/7 Grundy/ Cannon my mom taught me that if I didn't have anything nice to say just don't say it.

Scott Dirkson played tailback for the Rankin led Smith Co Owls. I dont know specific stats but he did have a 2,000 yard rushing regular season and earned a schoolarship to MTSU. Led Smith Co to a semi final. Grant was 2nd best qb ever at LA, and thats saying alot. Danny McCoin was the best...he played in the pro's. Grant went on to set numerous records at TTU. He is now princepal at White County High. I agree Poteete was good...but compare SR seasons to Conner York and you will see a real screw job. 2780 passing, 2750 rushing, 74 TD's (5.2 per game), National HS playoff record 9 td's in 2nd round win over Tyner, game winning 60 yard td run verse ND in 3rd round. Dirkson played TB best I remember he was a type of player hand him the ball and watch him run.

Good stuff.

Yeah, that sees to be how the majority of backs were back then.

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
