Maryville... What are they doing different there?

Give that man a cigar!!! There's your real answer...all the other factors that have been mentioned are there, but the one "magic" ingredient is Quarles & company...The Whitehaven loss is the best example that comes to mind...not running Maryville's players down, but they were outmatched by bigger, faster, stronger, and more athletic players in almost every position. Watch the game, and you'll have a hard time finding Rebel mistakes...every player taking care of his assignment to the best of his ability on every down...that's winning football, and it doesn't come as easy as Maryville makes it look, that's what every coach in the profession is striving for, and very few ever accomplish it. I remember reading in the Memphis thread that nine seniors off that team got offers to play college ball, with three or four going to DI schools, and if not for a yellow hanky dropped in error, Quarles puts another gold ball in the trophy case with an awesome "trick" play. Player for player, Whitehaven should win that game by two or three scores.

You do realize that Maryville had three or four turnovers in that game. One was inside the 5 yard line as it looked he would score.

Yes, I do...pro players have turnovers, and I didn't mean to imply that Quarles taught them to walk on water. Maryville is above all other teams in most seasons because they play assignment football to a superior degree, even to the extent that allows them to out preform teams comprised of more gifted athletes on a consistent basis... is that better? Now add to that statement the fact that could be said of the Rebels every season for the past say,14 or 15 consecutive seasons...it's becoming pretty clear now, right?
