As much as I hate to say it you can probably count the WB game as a win for bearden. I'm not going to pick WB to beat bearden until they prove they can get it done. The past 2 years were WB's chance to beat them and they could not get it done so i'm going to have to pick bearden to win that game in 2015.

Have you changed your mind now because of your new coach. Some Bearden fans are optimistic because of coaching changes and a new offensive scheme. What happened to the Maryville pedigree George Quarles trained former QB that Shinlever hired last year to turn around the Bulldogs. Are Maryville people turning on each other over at BHS?

Bearden will scrimmage South-Doyle next Friday (May 1) at Bearden.  Time TBD.

South-Doyle has some solid linemen back, but will be looking to replace almost all of its skill position guys.  The talent is there at S-D, but it is going to be young and for the most part short on meaningful Friday night experience.  Those guys did get in to a lot of Friday night games last fall, but it was for the most part long after the games had been decided.

Still, a good opportunity for both Bearden and South-Doyle to see where they are next Friday.

It's hard to tell. I know that he is a good coach that has a proven track record. I also know that we'll have some talented players this year as we always do. But the big questions are yet to be answered. Will he be a good fit? Will our players buy into what he is selling? Will the IRS find that he did something bad?

Who is the new OC where is he from and what is his experience. I thought Coach Fendley was the line coach. He has been there a long time and has had some good o lines. Why get rid of him?

He is a very good coach. He will catch on with a winner. The spring will show what has changed when they scrimmage some one. I hope they do well. Tough schedule, especially with some long road games against proven programs.

New OC came over from Unicoi County.  He's very big on zone read and multiple formations and personnel packages.  They'll look a lot like an NFL team on offense with read option thrown in.

They've got some good coaches on staff.  Bearden is now guaranteed a playoff spot next year under the new Super 32 realignment, even if they go 0-10, but they have a BRUTAL district and were 1-9 last year with a very young team that was starting a bunch of freshmen at the highest classifcation in TSSAA football.

Long-term, this group could grow up and surprise some people in a year or two, but Maryville, Dobyns-Bennett, Science Hill, Hardin Valley, etc. aren't going anywhere.

To the OP, Bearden has traditionally been very good in basketball and baseball, but football is up and down.  They'll have good years and bad years.  They've been on a downswing for a little while, but academically that school is top notch and rivals a good private school.  I hope your son loves it there!

You must be very close to the Bearden program to know those kinds of specifics-- Excellent! What can you tell us about spring practice thus far?

They're still very young.  The numbers look good, they made some great gains in the offseason program, and there's enthusiasm, which nice to see, but they are SO YOUNG.

Most of the talent is in the underclasses, especially the rising sophomores.  In another year or two, they'll be good, but this is still a rebuilding program with a tough schedule.  The team will be better this year, but the record might not show it.  People need to give them time.

That said, they have a good coaching staff and a couple of stud athletes--the problem is that Maryville and the other schools just have more of them.

Last year they were limited by a couple of coaches who didn't take care of their responsibilities like they should have.  Those guys are gone now.

I'm glad to hear the future is bright for the Bulldogs and that you have faith in the staff. Sounds like those lacking coaches were on offense and were in need of replacing.

And one of the reasons the football program has struggled is because those baseball and basketball athletes tend to be one sport athletes.  Very few kids play one of those and football at Bearden.  It's not a school where in recent history athletes have been "shared" by sports.

So, from 1-9 to looking like an NFL team on offense. Guy from Unicoi Co.(do they still play in cow pastures there?) must be the next coming of Lombardi.

Where will Beardens wins come from? The district schedule will be more difficult. Bearden will be seen as the worst team in the district. Where is the run game? No real RB. QB is very inconsistent and turns the ball over too much. There best player is gone and it seems he was mismanaged on offense last year and that is on the HC/OC/RB coaches. Maybe your boy can help them out, but then again he might be mixed up in a political situation at Bearden that ran off a good HC and some of his assistants and replaced them with inexperienced HC/OC that won a political appointment from the principle based on where the came from (the so called Maryville pedigree), and not the overall experience and success on their resumes. Good luck to your son.

Cam Whaley is very good running back.  He will be transfering to Bearden from Catholic, rising sophomore.

Some places think if you have people that have played at Maryville they come with the Colonel's Secret Recipe but their totally wrong. The Colonel's main two ingredients are Ellis the line coach and Gaylor the defensive coach and the day when one or both of them are gone Maryville will still win but it will be a major blow to that program.

I meant they'll be running a pro-style offense, not that they'll be scoring as if they're an NFL team.

Again, give them time.  It's a very young group with some coaches who are doing the right things to build the program up, but they have a tough road to hoe the next year.  Rome wasn't built in a day and hopefully they can surprise some people this year, but the real payoff might not be for another year or two.

    • Won't happen. College coaches will back the coach every time and it cost this young lady her senior season. Looks like the player may be right on this one. School let her  go after one season. This stuff happens more than you think.
    • “No college is going to offer a scholarship to a player that is kicked off of the team.” For language? I’m not seeing that as a dealbreaker.
    • Why did the coach get rehired after she was let go as an assistant by the former Warren County coach and the current AD?? Is that accurate?? I am very familiar with situations like this. Suprised lawsuits haven't happend before. If the coach unfairly let the player go, I think she has a shot because it cost her a scholarship. No college is going to offer a scholarship to a player that is kicked off of the team. Not going to happen. There are bad hires like this a bunch and kids are treated unfairly by coaches that can't coach a lick and have super long ropes somehow. Amazing how some of these coaches get hired and keep their job.
    • I am going to assume you are not a lawyer, and most reasonable lawyers would not say the lawsuit has a zero percent chance in court. I agree with you that a coach has the ability to dismiss anyone from a team. However, Ms. Winfree was never presented with the opportunity to present her witnesses and have them tell the coaches and administrators what they heard. A lawyer could better explain the lawsuit and the grounds to you. Before you start making wild assumptions about the lawsuit, would it be too much to ask that you do a little legal research first? The lawsuit is dealing with due process, loss of property, and defamation.   You can read the lawsuit here: https://bdnewsletter.files.wordpress.com/2024/04/doc-1-complaint-filed-4-18-2024.pdf
    • The administration took the path of backing the coach and whispering to people that the kid was a problem. The reality is that the kid was never a problem on a team or classroom. The player says she has witnessed who back her not saying the f-word.  Why did the coach make that story up and other stories? I am not Sigmund Freud and do not have an answer for the ex=-coach's behavior..
