Local TV coverage noting ways to help and what is being done to comfort others...

VERGNE, TN (WSMV) -An early morning crash on Interstate 24 in La Vergne took the life of a teenager early Sunday morning.

The wreck happened at about 2:30 a.m. near the Waldron Road exit.

Troopers identified Daniel Winters, 16, as the victim. Winters attended Blackman High School in Murfreesboro, according to friends and students.

An incident report listed Winters as the passenger in the car that wrecked Sunday morning. Investigators said the driver, Michael Brobeck, 18, lost control of the vehicle while heading east.

The car sustained extensive damage when it hit a rock wall, eventually overturning. Family members said Winters was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he passed away as a result of his injuries.

Brobeck, who was hurt, was also taken to a nearby hospital.

Neither boy was wearing a seat belt, according to information provided by the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The report indicates it does not appear alcohol played a factor in the crash, but tests will determine whether drugs played a role.

Criminal charges are pending for Brobeck, according to a THP spokesman.

A Go Fund Me account has been set up in Winters' honor. The money will help pay for funeral expenses.

The page states Winters leaves behind four siblings, as well as a stepbrother and stepsister. Hours before his death, the teen had qualified for a state wrestling tournament.

"[Daniel] is so very loved by his family so much, but also by his Blackman wrestling family - teammates, coaches and all who knew him," the page reads.

Additional grief counselors will visit Blackman High School on Monday to assist students and faculty, according to Rutherford County administrators.
