13AA

Basketball season is getting closer and closer as we are eight weeks away from Jamboree action, and nine from hall of champion games. With that said, how does everyone think district 13AA will shake out? Westview and Obion lost some key contributors from last season, but still have some talent. Dyersburg and Crockett have all of their scoring back, and Milan and South Gibson have most of their core coming back. Here is how I think the district plays out.

1. Dyersburg- They have the best coach in the district-- Mahafey doesnt get enough credit IMO. Their seniors have started varsity games since they were sophomores, they have arguably the best PG in the district with Kevin Spencer, and they are battle tested after only losing to South Side by 2 in the region quarters last year.

2. Westview- They get Mcmillan and their PG back, along with the younger Sams and Justin Johnsons little brother. They can score it, but will they guard anybody is the question? Remember, they gave up 75 points in the second half of the state tournament last year. Probably have the most talent in the district, but defense wins in the long run.

3. Obion- They have their bigs back, but I dont know how good their guard play will be without Wiggins and King. If they get anywhere close to the guard play they had last year they could easily win it. That remains to be seen, and will be the x factor for them going deep into the post season.

4. Crockett- They have tons of athletes, but never can put it together it seems like. With the Branch kid tearing his knee up in football, they definitely will be missing a post presence. Their athletes will keep them in every game though, so they could win a few they shouldnt.

5. South Gibson- Without Dyess, how are they going to score the ball? I think Wilkins is a good coach, but the talent isnt there to compete this year in my opinion.

6. Milan- I dont know how much better they will be. Yes, they have everyone back, but they just werent very good last year. We will see how they develop, but I think it will be another long year for them.

Top 4 I agree with. Dyersburg I think is a sleeper to make state. I think they are that good. They went toe to toe with South Side last year and with mostly everyone coming back I think they are on the short list along with South Side, Haywood, and Fayette-Ware as teams who can get to Murfressboro.

Westview I saw over the summer, the McMillian kid still can shoot it from anywhere and BJ White is back. I think post wise they are gonna hurt, but offensively they should score enough to at least make the region semis. Anything over that is an great year.

Obion is tricky. Yes the posts are back, but they are gonna break in new guards. And that alone will be growing pains. Huggins should be the best big in the area this year by far.

Crockett County will finish in the top 4 and upset one of the top two. To a flashy basketball fan, this won't be a team to watch. But to a purist, the way those guys defend and rebound the basketball will keep them in lots of games.

To answer both questions at the same time: It depends and still too early. Main thing I saw is offense is way behind defense right now. Lots of 63-60 games this week. I need to see Dyersburg play Westview and Obion in district play. And South Side will get better, as will Fayette-Ware. South Side is looking for some scoring and Fayette-Ware is gonna be without Jackson for a few weeks. Both will hit their peak around district time. So still too early on a lot of teams.

The amazing thing about Dyersburg beating South Side is that their best player was in street clothes. The Spencer kid played football this year so he wasn't even playing. Add him to the team and they really have a chance to go deep in the postseason. Mahaffey's teams are always one of the best defensive teams around. Now he's got some kids who are battle tested. Look out for them.

    • Did this happen? Does anyone know? Ripley has their HC job posted on the bulletin board over the weekend.
    • Coalfield definitely isn't the same team they've had the past few years. They are still the favorites to make it out of their region because of their pitching. They have 1 arm that sits low to mid 80s and 2 other arms that are mid to high 70s with good off speed stuff. If you can avoid their top 3 bats in their lineup then you have a shot to beat them. Their 4-9 hitters are average at best. Wartburg's ace was able to shut them down last week in the game Wartburg won 4-2.
    • It is the longest season. Plus, 30 games a year. No Christmas break. I would say basketball is the most time consuming.
    • No movement on Chester? South Gibson? Gibson County?
    • Winfree's senior year was the season she needed to secure more college interest. That opportunity was taken away from her. A lot of false assumptions can be made about what happened and what the options are. Unfortunately, the former coach and administration did not allow Winfree to have due process. A lawsuit was filed for a reason, and it will run its course by people who conduct discovery and take depositions. Unless the parties settle out of court, a lot of the pertinent issues will come to the public surface. I wrote about many of the issues here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/11/17/grounds-for-investigation-and-suspension/ I interviewed Winfree after she was dismissed from the team and wrote about it here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/12/01/a-new-interview-with-sable-winfree/ Winfree had been on teams in Warren County since the fourth grade and never been dismissed from a team. The real questions are why was Winfree dismissed from the team, and why the administration backed a coach whom they did not rehire.
