Memphis high school football: 9 (10 - 1) games to watch in Week 11

It's Week 11, the last week of the high school football regular season in Tennessee. Here are 10 games in and around Shelby County that will bear watching.

All games are at 7 p.m. unless noted.

Game of the week

Germantown (9-0, 2-0) at Whitehaven  (8-1, 2-0) 

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

It all comes down to this: Two top-five 6A teams battling for the region championship on the final Friday of the regular season. Germantown hasn't been Whitehaven since 2008 and most of those games weren't even close. But this is a different group of Red Devils, strong in all three phases of the game, and they've learned how to win the close ones. Conversely, the Tigers have allowed only 60 points all season. This one will come down to whoever wins the turnover battle and controls the line of scrimmage.

The pick: Germantown

Lausanne (8-0, 5-0) at FACS (2-7, 0-5)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The Lynx have a state-best 23-game winning streak while the Crusaders are out of the playoff picture. So why is this game worth watching? It will be the final appearance for FACS quarterback Jack Grissom, who has re-written the school's record book and is on pace to finish as the county's top passer for the second year in a row. Well done, Jack.

The pick: Lausanne

CBHS (9-0, 2-0) at MUS (5-4, 1-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

You have to go back to 2005 to find the last CBHS team to win at least 10 games in a season but the Brothers can do just that with a victory in this rivalry game that stretches back to the 19th century. The teams are pretty even skill-wise and both have fine kicking games. The difference will be line play where CBHS has simply out-physicaled every team its faced.

Trezevant (4-5, 3-1) at Raleigh-Egypt (9-0, 4-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Behind Kalyn Grandberry and his Shelby County regular-season record 34 touchdowns, the Pharaohs have scored 425 points this season, second in the city behind Cordova (470). But what's often overlooked is that Cedric Henderson, Larry Turner and company have allowed just 90 points, which is also second behind Whitehaven. In short, this is a complete team.

The pick: Raleigh-Egypt

Briarcrest (8-1, 1-1) at St. Benedict (6-2, 0-2)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

After defeating MUS in a memorable comeback two weeks ago, the Saints can secure second-place in the region with a victory. Look for University of Memphis commit Tyler Badie to see a lot of touches in his final regular-season game for Briarcrest.

The pick: Briarcrest

 

Munford (8-1, 5-1) at Brighton (5-4, 5-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The Cougars secured their playoff spot with a 56-34 victory over Kirby last week. But the Cardinals made that one look boring by comparison as quarterback Malik Jackson three for four scores and ran for five more in a 69-50 win over Southwind. Munford's grounnd game has been clicking all year and it would behoove the Cougars to put some drives together and keep Jackson and company on the sidelines.

The pick: Munford

Arlington (6-3, 2-1) at Collierville (6-3, 2-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

What was already an intense rivalry game took on more meaning when Dragons coach Mike O'Neill announced this would be his final game before moving to Houston to begin treatment for throat cancer. Tigers' quarterback Tate Kolwyck needs just 121 yards to become the third quarterback in state history to surpass 10,000 yards. Collierville's Matt Connors is terrific in his own right so expect some points in this one.

Southwind (6-3, 4-2) vs. Ridgeway (5-4, 5-1) at Halle

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The Roadrunners control their own destiny; after earlier victories over Munford and Brighton they will win the Region 8-5A championship with a victory over their archrival. Southwind is locked into the fourth seed and will have to play much better defensively than it did against Munford last week.

The pick: Ridgeway

Douglass (5-4, 4-0) vs. Fairley (7-2, 4-0) at Freeman

When: Thursday, 7 p.m.

Easy to figure out the ramifications here; the winner is the Region 8-2A champion and the loser finishes in second. The Red Devils have certainly played the tougher schedule (Cordova, Germantown, MUS) but Fairley looks like the real deal under first-year coach Gene Robinson.

The pick: Fairley
