To answer that question you have to look at Powell's record before and after Ellison.  Give him a chance to succeed and if he doesn't you have a qualified up and coming coach already on staff to promote.  As it turned out Ellison had a better than expected season and said coach was also promoted within the program to a coordinator. (He had already been a coordinator on a multi-state championship team) Now...this is all the talk I hear at breakfast....I just type what I've heard.

Larry, time to find a new breakfast table!

The coach your are talking about is a terrific football coach, but I am not sure that he was a coordinator in his last stop.

And as for having a "better than expected season", most who follow Powell don't buy that.  Yes, they won 5 games, but look at the schedule and who they beat for those 5 games.  Playing those types of teams don't help you get better.  The bottom line is that they couldn't finish in the top 4 of a mediocre 6 team region and make the playoffs.

The timing of this is rather curious, however.  Hopefully something will come down by week's end.

I’m shocked by your comments here HTV. Seriously, I understand your loyalty to Lowe but after what CJA did with this program in one year.....it is amazing to think that Powell would go 5-5 in year 3 regardless of who they played.

So much for that Knox County rule about a job being posted for 10 days before a hire can be made! Times, they are a changing.

I'm not certain but I believe they did away with the 10-day timeline two years ago.  Now, you just have to post the job for applications and interview 3 applicants.

I tend to agree, Knox. Given what happened in the wake of CJA's short tenure, I think Powell needed to prove that they could beat someone/anyone, just to build some confidence. They showed slow/steady improvement under Rodney (beat two winless teams in year 1, one win in year 2), although I don't think anyone expected them to get to 5 wins in year 3. The program is in a much better position now than it was a few years ago.

I do agree with HTV though, it wasn't like Powell beat a murderer's row to get to 5 wins; they didn't beat a single team with a winning record (Halls was terrible in August). Before Rodney's resignation, I think most fans were anxious to see if Powell could take the next step forward in year 4 (get to the playoffs). I assumed (incorrectly) that this would be the make/break year for Rodney, especially since he was hired under the previous administration.

If you ask most Powell fans, I think they are happier this morning. Most of us remember what Matt was able to do with the Powell program the first time around, and if it weren't for a litany of coaching changes (for a variety of reasons), CJA would never have had the opportunity to torch the program like he did.

What did I say that "shocks" you or is factually incorrect?

Look at the schedule.

I don’t recall saying that you were “factually incorrect” but I am shocked by how you stated it. I look forward to watching CML take this Powell team to at least an 8-2 record this coming season. Seems like the stars have all aligned for the Panthers again!

no way they compete with fulton, south doyle, oak ridge or west. 6-4 at best if they can top campbell county

I agree. Matt isn't just going to come in and suddenly win 8-9 games a year. It took him a number of seasons before they really hit their stride during his first tenure.

    • It is what it is. Sorry DFL.
    • One of the biggest loosing teams in Mid-State are the Macon County Tigerettes. I have noticed that the roster is smaller than in the years past. All the senior's have quit. We have a great group of Jr High players coming up. I sure hope they don't loose them, like they have lost so many others this year. With this young group of girls coming up, a weaker district, they should have no problem going to State.
    • It was updated this season, because I did it.  Linder is the school's all-time leading rusher at 5,156 yards with 2,436 of those coming in 2014.
    • Oh, I’m sure you did. Maybe you heard just a rumor, but considering we have a football practice field and a soccer field that’s frequently used for lacrosse games and practices, I highly doubt it. Let me change that. I know for a fact that didn’t happen.   Glad you finally stopped attacking a bunch of high school students, but still obsessed with the coaching staff for some unknown reason, even though you could name more than three (at most) coaches without looking it up. But now come up with something else.
