Close to 1/5th of all HS kids in TN, will turn 19 in HS or before they enter college and the vast majority of those kids are not being held back for athletic reasons.

This statistic is worded very carefully to help fit a rhetorical point.  How many of that 1/5th are kids with birthdays between late May and early August?  It's very common for some kids to turn 18 the summer before their senior year, so yes technically they would fall into the category of being 19 before they enter college.  However, I don't think that's a fair statistic to use to help in this point.

Nonetheless, still very impressive! Congrats to Cody!

Since he competed last year as an 8th grader, and is an 8th grader again this year, does that mean he won't be able to compete his senior year? Isn't there a rule about 5 years of competition? Or does that even matter to this kid, as he'll likely be training for Olympics 5 years from now and couldn't care less about a high school state title

    • Yes this process is moving slower than I would have expected
    • also was told coady auston applied, he served as defensive coordinator for greenfield under don pitt several years ago before going to Obion county
    • TSSAA restrictions for hiring non-faculty coaches have been removed for over a year at this point. In the past a non-faculty person had to be "grandfathered" by being an assistant coach for five years, being fingerprinted, and having a background check run per TSSAA rules... since those were rescinded, the board of directors for the school district are responsible for any/all restrictions on hiring non-faculty personnel. I guess what I'm saying to you is that if you really wanted what you posted, it's already possible as long as your local BOE will allow for it.
