Grandparents at Games???

Why are grandparents not allowed to come to games?  In a lot of cases, they are around these kids as much as the parents and have helped raise these kids.  I understand that TSSAA guidelines exclude them currently, but why?  I think they should change that until they go back to normal attendance.  There is plenty of room for them to come into these 1/2 empty gyms and maintain social distancing.  We are only talking about 20 or so extra fans.   Anyone have any thought?

There's a clear defining line drawn with "anyone living in the same household". If you include anyone other than that, you have to have a gray area someplace concerning who does/doesn't get in. Be aware that this isn't TSSAA, but the Governor's direction. I don't necessarily agree with it, and especially don't like it because it excludes me from games too even though I'm in constant contact with kids who play.

I think the governor is just trying to do something to say that he did something.  I don't think having grandparents in the stands would make a huge difference.  However, you have to cut it off somewhere.  There are some districts that are playing without fans at all including parents.

Yeah, those districts not playing games and/or playing games without allowing parents into the gym have lost their minds.  I'm gonna bet the people that are making those decisions don't have a kid playing.  It's sad.

Do you all think it is prudent to allow the most at-risk age group (grandparents) to come to games?

Do you think the players quarantine themselves from grandparents away from school? You could argue that the most effective (prudent) way to curtail the potential spread of Covid among students would be to suspend all athletic events, but nobody wants that. We have to find some middle ground between safety and security that is reasonable, and (IMO) prohibiting family isn't it. Posting social distancing guidelines, and requiring that fans always wear a mask are reasonable, but unenforceable on public property... In my opinion, awarding players a reasonable number of tickets and selling the surplus on a first come basis while limiting the seating capacity of the venue is the only sensible way of avoiding the likelihood of mass contact.

I don't think they should restrict any specific group from attending games.  Nobody said grandparents are required to come, but they should have the option to make that decision.  Set a capacity number & sell tickets to priority groups first and the rest to the general public.  Just my opinion.

I agree with that.  It is sad that there are no student sections at the games.  30 students can sit in classrooms all day, but not attend basketball games.  I am grateful that the games are being played though

Perfectly stated.

In our District student athletes were given up to four tickets each to be shared with anyone living in the same household. The only change is that the allotment of tickets can now include grandparents.

What cannot be lost in this is that cheerleaders/dance teams will not be allowed in gymnasiums for the regular season and district tourneys. The TSSAA made efforts with the Governor's office to allow the return of cheer/dance with certain precautions but the Governor's office would not allow it.

    • And can you tell me who those two quarterbacks were, and every kid that was put into college from Bearden is a Bearden kid? It’s kind of why they graduated from Bearden.   and I would definitely not consider ETSU “waste”…
    • Most of this is complete gibberish. But the one part I could decipher is putting kids in college. This coaching staff hasn’t put a single Bearden kid in college. They completed wasted one of the best WRs in East TN and have ruined two talented QBs. All because they’re in over their heads.
    • Well, I’d hope the new coaching staff thinks they are all that because they can always walk around the school, anytime they want, thinking that, especially for what they’ve done for the student athletes and the players, putting more kids in college in his first season than the old coaching staff did in numerous years combined, but we will just sweep over that because I know you don’t like facts. But trust me, nobody wanted Mr. Big britches, made the star player switch to quarterback, which is ultimately the reason he ended up transferring to play the position. He loved, but unfortunately, had to be at another school because Mr. Big Britches doesn’t like when a teenager knows more than him, but can’t expect much coming from a guy who used all class throwing pencils up into the ceiling and making fun of football kids who were failing class right to their face, and in front of numerous students, even projecting on the board most of the time.
    • After that first paragraph, I can see why you’re a TA and not a teacher. Have you made the move from South Knoxville to Bearden yet?    Maybe he left because he is an actual teacher and coach, and didn’t want to be associated with a group of foul mouthed middle school coaches who like to pretend they’re big time.
    • Yeah and the coach is gone. Whole bizarre situation here. We played them a couple of times at MTSU last few years. She was a player for sure.
