Smoky Bears Off-season thread

Tonight would been a great time to pull out all those Little Smoky Bowl trophies to show everyone for recruiting purposes. I actually saw a program from that game two weeks ago for the game against Powell back on 11-23-67. It would take an awfully dedicated fan to miss Thanksgiving Dinner in order to go watch a 2-6-1 Sevier County football team in the cold weather play Powell High School.

Not even sure where those trophies are. I hope they’re in the trophy cases in the commons area, but I don’t think they are.

They sure were piled in to the old Lon C Burchfield last night, some good football was played and some uuuuugly football was played. The Smoky Bears looked really good IMO and the Cougars were a nice surprise playing with the Highlanders....

Maybe the most packed I’ve ever seen it. Had a lot fun watching the local teams play. Me personally I’d rather watch SC play the county teams than lenoir, hva, or east hamilton. Be more fun and a bigger crowd against Northview, GP, PF, or Seymour.

I would want that on my tombstone if I had been one of those coaches. Speaking of old coaches Bob Davis who was an assistant for one year back in 55 under Coggins then took the program over in 56, 57 and 58 before leaving for Carson-Newman was one of Doug Dickey's hand picked assistants when he arrived at UT. Davis was a long time employee of UT and served many rolls until his retirement. It's nice to know that one of your former head coaches done well after leaving there.

I really enjoyed us old timers discussing the jamborees and what we think will happen this upcoming season. Maybe next time some of our “fans” from 226 cedar street will join us and get a history lesson.

GP will never play SC on football. They are happy beating up on the likes of North Green before getting trounced by Alcoa in the playoffs

    • Good ole Bradley Zulliger. He was a really good QB @ OR. Fun to watch.
    • They should be pretty good in year two for Rang.  Replacing most of the offensive production losing Dozier, Hayward and Rembert , but they're are skill kids in place ready for their shot.  I know I say this every year, but the o line should show improvement after two years in Rang and Kevin Day's weight program.  I still would favor West over Plow and OR come November.  The Rebs will have to grow up a bunch between now and then, and will probably take some lumps along the way with that schedule.  But I predict come playoff time they will be ready.   One of their coaches half joked to me that they could go 5-5 regular season and win the state championship.  Ha ha.
    • there will be a couple of teams, that could make some noise
    • Dyersburg may win back to back to back championships. They are going to be hands down the best 3A team. Plus their District/region/sectionals are not very good. They basically just have to make it to region out of a 5 team district that has a few decent teams. South Gibson will be okay but they graduate their best player and there is nobody in the region 7 or region 8 who is going to compete with them.
    • I remember very well watching things change in the late 80's and yes it's all schools. Most people that are in charge today have any idea because they were raised and taught under this social experiment so they don't have a clue. Anyone that does see the truth for what it is usually try and hide it by blending in so that the School Gestapo doesn't round them up and take them to the Fuhrer ( kindly putting it ). Yes it is all schools not just Maryville. This train ride is not headed in a good direction and if the public had seen a movie of what's happening now back in 1980 everyone would have been headed home afterwards to change underware.
