Overton in 96/97 was a VERY GOOD team, but I believe their 95/96 team was their best team. That team was STACKED!!! It had some of the guys listed in a previous post in addition to McTorry. I may be wrong on my yrs but that's what I remember. Coach Gabe, if you're on here and read this, please confirm which team was your best.

After the public/private split, Clarksville in 99/00 was loaded as well, but I dont think any public school would've wanted any of the 96 Overton squad. Just my opinion though.

State Individual wise the 1995-96 team had four finalists 2 champs, 2 RU and a total of eight placers (2,2,2,1,1,0) and won the State tournament on Friday night.  You are right they did not show up on that State dual day at Ryan.  Snow made several teams no shows and the guys didnt compete to their level and they did lose twice to Ryan in duals that season.  Maybe looked ahead to Ryan past Baylor who knows.

State Dual wise the 1996-97 team was 29-0, 14th  and 11th ranked in the USA (four placer winners 3 finalists at the Reno Tournament of Champions) at the individual tournament also had 5 finalists 3 Champs, 2 RU and a total of seven placers (3,2,0,1,1,0).

Comparing these two teams is tough.  Charles McTorry was the face of the franchise so it's hard to pick a team he wasn't on so I get the difficulty in choosing.  They were a pleasure to coach and many of them are still my good friends.  The 95-96 team was composed of younger guys with the exception of Radford, Moser, and McTorry.  They laid the ground work and set the tone for the next team which as a dual team was more even and seasoned.  We are all proud of being the team that won during the time all the teams were together and acknowledge the teams currently wrestling.  Those guys back then were on a mission to raise the level of wrestling in TN.  We actively travel across the country and wrestled in some of the toughest events and Charles getting recruited to Nebraska helped open the door for others in our state to be considered for colleges outside TN.

In conclusion I won't pick I'll just say thank you to all who remember their wrestling and that I am proud to have been in the ring with them and would do it again if I could.  They faced every challenge I gave them and here almost 30 years later we are discussing these high school kids accomplishments. I was proud of them then and I am proud of the men they have become.

I loved watching both those teams wrestle, also being a high schooler at the same time but being a Freshman and soph during that time I did not want to face anyone that had Overton on their singlet! They really did lay the ground work, especially McTorry when you went across the country to wrestle which no teams really had prior and him getting recruited to Nebraska. Really helped those that came a few years later like Ward, Blackmons and many others that signed with big time programs across the country.

    • Playing high school sports is a privilege not a right.  The college did not have to rescind the scholarship.  Scholarship offers are pulled all the time for a number of reasons. That was 100% their choice.  A coach can keep, cut, or dismiss any player that they want to without reason anytime they want.  Is that the right way to run a program?? I don't think that it is, but these are the facts of the matter. This case has absolutely 0% chance of going in the plaintiff's favor. Futhermore, I'd imagine that these administrators and the coach are a part of some teaching or coaching organization that will cover at least 1 million dollars each in legal fees. Obviously the kid and her family feel like there were "damages" thus the lawsuit.  Unfortunately, the law is not on their side in this case.
    • Maryville will recapture the loses from last year against West, Bradley and Farragut. The Bearden game will be the tough one but I look for the wheels to come off that ride somewhere down the road because of all the crap that goes on there. I know to many parents there and some of the things I've been told and some of the post a few of them have made on facebook. They all can't be liars.
    • If Heritage moves down and Alcoa moves up the best thing for Heritage is to do what William Blount did when theystopped playing Maryville or meet certain defeat. Honestly can't see Alcoa not moving up the way the county is growing. Might be in the Mountaineers best interest to stay in 5A because none of those teams on their schedule are anything close to Alcoa.
    • I say over as well. Barney, regarding the move to 4A, will the cross-town blowhards move up as well??
