Massey matchup tool predicts

Covington 42

Brighton 14

It’s early in the season and I’m not sure Massey is right on this. I expect a closer game than that.

Wasn’t 42-14 the score last week when Brighton played Henry Co?  If so I agree with you. I would expect a win but a little closer margin.

I looked at Sonny Moore power rankings:

Covington 112.61

Brighton 91.68

The difference is 21 plus 2 points for Covington home field advantage. That makes the spread 23 points. Slightly lower than Massey’s 28 points. Let’s see if either one gets close to the actual score.

Final score

Covington 35

Brighton 27

Nobody told Brighton they should lay down and get trounced, so they didn’t.

The Brighton offense looked good in the first half. Covington could not stop them. The old question is - is Brighton’s offense that good, or is Covington’s defense not very good.

I’ll wait to answer that question after Covington visits Dyersburg next week.

Just a wrap-up on this game. I wanted to share some stats:

Covington did what I expect a JR Kirby team to do, that is, run the ball:

Covington

Rushing 323 yards (Smith 244) 4 TD’s

Passing 4 of 9 for 70 yards 1 TD

Brighton

Rushing 19 rushes for 70 yards

Passing 13 of 27 for 222 yards 1 INT

These stats show us something about the Covington defense too. The Charger defense against the run is pretty solid, but our pass defense needs to improve a lot. We will see what the coaching staff can do to help that happen as the season goes along.

    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
