JR Duals

Recommended Posts

I understand the logistics can be tough for some as well as money and time.

But just one time I'd like to see how Team TN would fare if we brought all the best kids in our state. If we really stacked our team how would we compete with the others? You know team PA, IL, IO etc are all bringing their best.

I would also like to see how Team Tennessee would do if a majority of the best kids would compete in both the JR Duals and 16U Duals.  IMO, there are two major issues:  1.  The cost $$$  2.  Many of the better kids in Tennessee do not compete in freestyle and Greco Roman therefore they are not comfortable wrestling those styles against great competition.  With regards to the financial side of the equation I have always said that if a wrestler is selected to compete on one of those teams their individual club should work to make sure the wrestler has an opportunity to make the trip.  I know for a fact that several clubs will assist in paying for kids to compete in national tournaments.

Great question!  I have ask that question numerous times and no one seems to know

It's strange to me... I know the 14u team was completely up to the parents to get them to PA, the first day they had to wear their club singlets because the team singlets weren't in yet. And then we don't even have a 16u team... I think it's time people start asking questions of Mr. Hatcher, everybody sure was quick to get Bowers out when he was doing shady stuff.

Seriously?! I’m hoping this is your attempt at humor.

Joey Evans you are the Head High School Coach of Samuel Everett School of Innovation. Are you really accusing TNUSA of doing “Shady Stuff”? As you are aware we only have three ways of raising money for our organization, Ironman, The State Freestyle and Greco Tournament and a partial payment from USA on memberships. This does not create a ton of income to fund trips for Tennessee Athletes. I don’t remember seeing your squad helping support Tennessee, USA Wrestling at either of those events. Which seems to be the case for the majority of  people that get on this board and complain about what the board is either doing or not doing. I’m sure you are  aware the cost of everything has gone up, including buses, hotels and meals. USA Wrestling has doubled the cost of all the duals, which puts us in a very difficult financial situation. As far as the 14U team, the bus cost alone would’ve been $16,000.  The 16 U duals were scheduled by USA Wrestling in Salt Lake City Utah. I am sure you can only imagine the cost of flights or bus rental to that location. There was no possible way for the 16u team to have a price that made sense for kids and parents. As far as singlets for the 14u dual team there was a issue with Nike that caused the singlets to arrive late, Mike Hatcher actually flew to PA to hand deliver the singlets to the kids at his own expense of money and time to make sure they had them. Our financials are open to anyone in the state that has any questions, I will share the raw data with anybody that is interested. We would welcome any help you would like to bring to the organization, instead of complaining on this board anonymously why don’t you roll your sleeves up and help. I just want to be very clear,  anonymously making accusations about Mike Hatcher Is complete BS! He has done nothing but help our state our kids, while the majority of you sit on your #### and do not do a darn thing!

Thank you for sharing the reasoning I was genuinely just looking for answers I admit I could have went about it a different way. I will openly apologize to you and Mr. Hatcher. You know me well enough to know those were questions I had but had also been asked by other people. I have taken kids Ironman and state ever since I took over at SESI, but due to construction in my school building can not have practices right now that's why I had kids Wrestling for Dodgens club this year. Again i apologize for what seemed like an attack, and I apologize for not texting or calling you before posting.

I appreciate you clarifying! Eric Davis is the East Director, Matt High is the 16U Director and Jamie Morrel is the 14 U director. They are available to answer any questions anyone may have. Unfortunately, for Tennessee USA Wrestling like I said we only have two fundraising tournaments a year. We are not like AAU that gets to run an entire season of folkstyle tournaments and take three dollars per entry fee per tournament. We have to support three age level duals for the girls and 3 age level duals for the boys plus Fargo for both! That is a lot going out with not much coming in. If everyone wants to have better cost for the kids, I would suggest that all the coaches in the state support our tournaments and do everything they can to help us raise money because every penny of it goes back to the kids. No one on the board gets paid. It is completely volunteer.

I find it difficult to believe that the local clubs would not assist their kids in participating on Team Tennessee if there are financial difficulties

You’d be surprised. Some clubs won’t send their kids to certain camps because they think their kids will “get recruited”… Well, with six college programs there isn’t that what is or was supposed to happen?! For the ones who couldn’t be recruited yet, it gets them on the radar. I know I talked with just about every coach there and identified the ones who stood out. For the girls on the national teams it was free. There were world team members and current college wrestlers present for them to train with.

I know you’re talking about boys, and I know the club you were affiliated with looked out for lots of non-club kids, but coaches are even more selfish today than they were even just a decade ago. And we just had a camp that was open to all of our national team girls but maybe half showed up.

We have someone comparing Mike Hatcher to Ben Bowers (sorry Ben, him not me). Last time I checked Hatcher didn’t have kids, runs a fairly successful club and doesn’t get paid by TNUSAW. I’d like to think that Hatcher’s knowledge of wrestling goes a little further than the past few state chairpersons.

Instead of people pointing fingers, these individuals should either coach in the offseason and support our state teams or send their wrestlers somewhere that does. It’s only going to help them during the high school season.
