clipper
Freshman Brandon McGill was backup this year. He still has a ways to go but has potential. It will probably be point by commitee.
Guest blue1
Whoever gets the job has to get Zac Helton out then they will have a point.
redandblack63
Any word on the new coach at Central. Heard over the weekend it was down to 3. Lambert, Barnes, and Majors. Gresham which is the primary feeder school for Central had a very good team a couple of years ago. Zac Helton was on that team and played very well they also had some big kids Smith and few others. They also have some jrs. to be who are good players Baron Huber and William Gales. I think the McGill kid came from Whittles Springs and he too is a fine player. So yes there is some talent and to new coach must make sure to get this talent on the floor. Hope they don't drag their feet because spring practice will be very important to the new coach as well as team camp this summer.
clipper
Word today was that it may be a couple of weeks before we know anything. Evidently, Knox County's budget still has some questions to be answered.
Guest blue1
If the budget is a problem that may indicate that Central is looking at someone outside the system. Because if they were looking within the system that person would already have a teaching position and that would be the only factor that would be effected by the budget. My plea is that the administration doesn't fail the basketball atheletes as they have in the past 2 hires. Please hire the most qualified not the most convienent. Hire the canidate that can lead the Bobcat basketball program to the same level the football and baseball programs are on. I am feed up with watching poorly coached Basketball teams at Central. JKerrBdaMan
Blue1, First of all, I don't exactly see Tubby Smith knocking on the CHS door(or any other H.S. door for that matter). You make it sound like Central could have Tubby, but they usually pick the Wade Houston types of the basketball world. My advice is to CHILL OUT!!!!! I seriously doubt that you have ever been involved in the H.S. hiring process, so take my word for it, it is hard to do a "national search". 1) the individual should be a teaching fit, which by the way, is the REAL reason that they are there to start with (or at least it is with Lambert). So it is not that easy to hire whomever just because they "sound appealing". 2) Knox County is strapped for money right now, so the situation must be a fit for the school AND the system. So I hope this clears up any misconceptions you might have about watching "poorly coached basketball teams at Central the last few years". I too, agree that it has not been the most fruitful seasons on record, but would you rather have jerks that win coach your kids OR would you rather have someone that cares for them that can teach them something along the way too? One final thought, could it be that some schools are just known as Football schools?
clipper
on your final thought....that may be the problem with Central bball in the past. I for one refuse to accept your reasoning. There is no good reason why Central can't compete for the region regularly and go to the state every once in a while.
redupset
everyone interested in the Central opening needs to go to the Onedia Job thread on the basketball board and read threeeball's response to the question asked by Clipper in many way it sounds a lot like what Central needs central needs a coach that will stress defense "redrage" has been very outspoken in this regard we all know that coach Major will stress defense after all his time on the staff of Coach Izzo-- opps i mean coach Wright @ Fulton (he and coach Blevins the 2 best high school coaches in the knoxville area--hands down) what about the other canidates any of them think that defense is important what about the girls coach everyone agrees that he works hard BIG DEAL ???? isn't he supposed to work hard ?? that is what coaches do?? can he coach??? all i hear is that IF he gets it it is because he is the easy pick can he coach????? what is his history clipper said some time @jeff co a couple of years with the girls @central what else????? any one seen his teams ???? can they guard ???? clipper sounds like he has seen then red rage?? blue? threeball??? clipper
Yes, J.D.'s girls could and did play defense. They were very fundamentally sound. Always boxed out and almost always in the right place. They also ran a pretty effective press. Several times last year, they were down 15 or more and turned it around with the press to come back and win. They were patient on offense, workng to get what they wanted. They did this with less tallent than most teams in their district and I enjoyed watching them play.
Guest blue1
The last two hires Central's administration has settled on hiring a basketball coach. The teaching position is not a factor. Doesn't Coach Lambert teach at another school. If so is there any guarantee that he will be able to move to Central because of possible budget cuts. There are positions open this time and have been open the last two times that Central has hired a coach and they refused to make a legitimate search for the MOST QUALIFIED CANIDATE. I know more about the situation that you may think. 20+ years of coaching in E. Tn. has given me plenty of connections. Also do you really think coaches are hired because they are great classroom teachers? Now that is not to say that coaches are not good teachers in many cases they are the best in the school. But lets just say that Coach Helton was an award winning teacher (which he may be) but if he wasn't also a good footbal caoch he wouldn't be the football coach at Central long. If he didn't consitently produce winning teams he would be gone as a coach. Bottom line in my opinion your comment that Central may just be a football school is the same attitude that the administration has if they settle on Lambert. Central can be a Basketball school also if they hire the right person. If the administration will make a comittment to the basketball program. The same comitment they have made to football. They can hire someone within or outside system the teaching positions are there and will be there regardless of what happens with the budget.
