The snatch and clean and jerk are not used around here because most of the coaches I have seen lack the knowledge to teach them properly. The technique required to do them correctly is much more involved than the squat and bench. Most coaches don't take the time to TEACH the lifts! It is easier to send them over to the bench where the technique is straightforward. To say that the olympic lifts don't develop the muscles needed for football borders somewhere between uninformed and stupidity. These lifts teach explosion with heavy weights which translates to stronger faster players. You cannot grind out a slow max on the snatch or C & J like you can with a bench, squat or deadlift. Last time I checked, you want a strong, fast , explosive player for football (or any other sport for that matter). The jerk is simply the push press whether with even feet or by splitting them where you put the bar over your head. Check out the MAJOR college programs. They are ALL doing them in some form. Someone tell me how the strength used for the deadlift comes into play in a football game. Doing the snatch and clean and jerk will give you the strength to deadlift your opponent after you put him on his can. ;)

bigchief,

I am glad that someone on this forum understands the advantages of doing the olympic lifts. If only some of the coaches would get off their lazy tails and learn to teach the lifts correctly. Most coaches that I have seen don't even know how to teach the bench press or hex bar squat correctly.

    • I remember very well watching things change in the late 80's and yes it's all schools. Most people that are in charge today have any idea because they were raised and taught under this social experiment so they don't have a clue. Anyone that does see the truth for what it is usually try and hide it by blending in so that the School Gestapo doesn't round them up and take them to the Fuhrer ( kindly putting it ). Yes it is all schools not just Maryville. This train ride is not headed in a good direction and if the public had seen a movie of what's happening now back in 1980 everyone would have been headed home afterwards to change underware.
    • Hoping to make the playoffs.
    • You are so correct!  It’s really 99.9% of academia want to change to way that education is not only taught but the way it is viewed.  The pendulum has definitely swung as far to the left as possible and eventually will swing to the right much too far.  I have always  said that politics and one’s personal religious views need to stay out of education,  but for the last 40 years education has been running full throttle to what we have today.  If the social experiment that we are currently experiencing continues it is only a matter of time before the public school system in the USA completely collapses and all kids attend private schools or even worse don’t go to school.
    • He was a bruise but Aaron Dykes is HVA’s best RB ever.
    • I am talking about what they both did for their team. They both carried their team for four years while they were both there. I wasn’t really comparing them that would be unfair. Bishop is on a level of his own.
