William Blount Update

Blount had a "meet the coaches" meeting for parents on Tuesday night. Here's some details:

Roberts Reeves will be offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Looks like the Govs are gonna be running the wing - T. I think they are very suited for it this year with several quality running backs and a qb who is very experienced, makes good reads, and is a great runner. Passing game will be a major concern, with the Gov's lacking a lot of experience in the receiving corps.

Richard Gamble will be defensive coordinator. Govs will stay with their base 4 - 3. Defensively, they'll have to rely alot on speed because they are not very big. They'll have super quick defensive ends who will pose problems for bigger linemen and backs trying to stop them on pass rushes. Some great athletes in the secondary, but perhaps a little lean in experience.

Doug Garner will work with running backs. This is definitely WB's strong point I believe. Biggest thing they'll need to work on is "sticking it in the hole" instead of dancing around and bouncing it outside all the time. The speed is there.

Justin Emert will coach o-line and be in charge of weight room. I believe the line will be "strong" but not exceptionally big. There is at least one exception though. They have a Hatcher kid who is absolutely huge. I think technique will be key for their line. With fast runners, it won't be so important they "pancake" people, they just need to excecute well and open a hole long enough for the backs to get there.

Kicking position is wide open. Somebody will really need to step up here. Wojo (the qb) will handle punting and he does a good job.

What's scary is the Gov's schedule. Their non-region opponents are Knox Central, Alcoa, and Maryville. And of course their region is as tough as any around. Soddy-Daisy, Ooltwah, Farragut, Oak Ridge, McMinn County, Heritage, Bradley Central. Of those ten games, I only see three that I would consider WB the favorite in.

BTW, Coach Phelps was received very well by the parents that were there. He was very complimentary of his coaching staff. He stressed team and servanthood and personal development with a strong emphasis on his spiritual convictions. He also stated that the parents and boosters need to trust him and his staff and not be negative or question the coaching. If you're familiar with WB, that's asking a lot. I hope it can be so.

Sounds like we are going to be the running govs instead of last years four wide all the time govs. I believe Coach Phelps has everything running good down at WB.

You recently asked for a few clues on who I am. So here you go, I know exactly who you are and was riding down the road with you when you asked another person in the vehicle if he was me. If that don't help you I don't know what well. Now backintheday I don't believe I know do I?

GovMan, did you recently undergo an avator sex change operation?  What 's the deal.

JimRob,

The new avator reminds me of my mom. Each time I see it I think of her and have pleasant memories.

BlountFan, I'm so old and feeble, I remember asking someone if they were Blountfan but I can't remember when or where. Give me one more good clue ... just one more.

Do I play golf with you?

Goveman you said Coach Phelps was received very well by the parents that were there. and he asked that the parents and boosters need to trust him and his staff and not be negative or question the coaching. I am familiar with WB and that is asking a lot. Did Coach Phelps say how long he would be there?

Hey susie, don't look for coach Webb or any others off the old Alcoa staff to be joining the Govs. Looks like the only "specialist" coaching positions are RB and OL. Are you guys going to rely on the coordinators do it all (ex. Reeves with OC, QB, WR, TE and Gamble with DL, LB, DB) or will Phelps be more hands on or will they add any other coaches.

FlyinPro,

I think Coach Phelps is thinking 3 - 4 years probably.

Tornado1,

There is money availble for up to three more assistants. It's finding them that's the problem. I think Ronnie is looking ... but I wouldn't be surprised to see them enter the season with just the six coaches they currently have.

I think Ronnie will involve himself more. At Alcoa, people thought of him mostly as defensive and Dan Webb as offensive, but truth be known, Ronnie was very instrumental in the offense in the year they won the state title in the late 80's. What I believe about Ronnie ... he'll not try to force the personnel to fit his system. He'll adjust the system to fit the personnel.

Larry,

If the same pattern holds true from the past couple of years, their speed might be difficult for Soddy but it seems like Soddy is usually bigger and stronger. If they (SD) keeps it low scoring and make WB keep their defense on the field alot, WB is in trouble.

Are you a Soddy Daisy fan? If so, how do they look for this upcoming season?

Hey boyz!

I am sticking by my guns. It looked kinda bleak for me when I suggested Phelps by Friday, but me and the good Lord new what was in store for the Governors!

Webb will still have a hand in it come August 1.

Don't take it to the bank like you did on the Phelps hire, but you can wager a little money on it, especially if you get good odds!

Love you boyz :D
