MN14
When a team gets up to about 8-0, then thisd is the time to either work on passing and possession of the ball or something. Maybe no shots on goal without some type of restriction being applied. Put the JV in to have them work on the skills they need to be ready to take positions the next season. Oakland beat White County (boys) 22-0 about four years ago. I know the coach (Harter) for oakland said he couldn't control his players! My question is, "What type of coach can't control his players?" It sounds like the Science Hill coach doesn't know when to pull off the dogs. Any goals scored in a game like that should not even be considered toward the goals leader. The total goals scored will not matter to a team like Science Hill, because they won't be able to handle teams like Farragut, Bearden, Hendersonville, ECS, CBHS, etc. The great teams play great competition, but some teams must play within their district which means some powderpuff games. Good luck to the top teams listed above.
drsoccer
It sounds like Coach Harter to say he can't control his players, but I know the coach at Science Hill very well. I was disappointed and embarrassed to read that score. He is such a nice guy on and off the field. This is totally out of his character. Can someone from Science Hill explain the situation. Did he try to run it up or did the players get out of control?
Surf4life
drsoccer I know Coach Smelser as well. He is a good guy and that score did seem out of character for him. According to a parent and player, Science Hill subbed sometimes 3-4 players at a time, but the scoring didn't let up. Smelser was putting Freshman players in and the scoring still did not let up. He was giving every play playing-time but they continued to score. I'm sorry for saying this but Boone really is horrible. No doubt one of the worst teams I've ever seen. Science Hill did not purposely try to run up the score. Boone is just a bad team. Once Science Hill started subbing 3-4 in at a time(most of which were Freshman/Sophmores)and they continued to score, I don't think Smelser should be blamed for that. lcsoccer
THere comes a point when you call the dogs off and work on possession. If they wanted to, they could have kept from scoring goals.
drsoccer
Thanks Surf4Life for the explanation. Maybe some restricted shot opportunities like play the ball to the corners or no breakaways or only headers or shots outside the penalty area only could eliminate some goals. Irish17
That score is ridiculous. Coaches never want to tell their kids to not score, but what you should at least do is tell them that under no circumstance should they attempt a shot without passing the ball around lets say 15 times, or not to shoot inside the 18. 26-0 is embarrassing to a team and a score that would make alot of players quit. A couple years back I bet some of these people from science hill were getting on bearden for beating heritage so bad. To lose your next game was only fitting, and I bet you were real proud of that. it's me
once we get up 5/6-0, our jv plays. if we are still clearly controlling the game, we start with restrictions. such as not shooting until 5 different people (from our team) have touched it (consecutivly). eventually, if it get's this far, we allow our defenders to play up at midfield or even foreward. we've never had to go any farther than that... I agree, beating a team 26-0 is ruthless. coming from a team with previous history of being on the losing end of games like that, it is certainly not encouraging. we actually had some decent players quit because we got beat by a bigger, better, more physical team 1-15. since then we have worked our way back to being a pretty good team. with luck we will excel even further.
